View Full Version : North Island: Mahia Mayhem

Ok so I was talking to a KBer that I'd accosted while he was out and about (shopping for food as it was). And, as you do we got yarning about trips and gigs and various escapades over the summer break - well his actually coz I broke my bike. This was great and so was that etc...
We came up with an idea somewhere in there.. Mahia Mayhem.
Ok so it's not really going to be 'mayhem' but the idea is that it will be held at (or near Mahia (http://www.smaps.co.nz/nz/wairoa/mahia/)). It's relatively central for North Islanders and would make a nice alternative for the Southy's. There are camping grounds in Mahia with good facilities. Mahia is quite popular so there's no guarantee that there'll be sites available (hence the early notice) but because there are a couple of KBers who have local connections (notably me) and access to the only hire business in Wairoa (that my Daddy owns) - the intention is to have facilities (Portaloo's, shower water - all that good stuff) on a site that we can have a camp out at. Yes it will be a little rough and ready but you'd be there for a good time not a long time. It's not meant to be a "Biker Trash Everything Party" more like a BBQ and a few drinks get together without the stress of having to be somewhere the next day...
For those of you that have ridden up that way - you'll know it's a beautiful part of the country, with some great riding roads. Napier and Gisborne aren't too far away for creature comforts (Even Wairoa has running water now!) There are pubs at Mahia and Wairoa (and a couple of others around the place) there's places to buy food and you could even chuck out a fishing line and catch a fish if you felt that way inclined....
The idea is to have it in early February 2008 so the weather will be more settled and there won't be as many people around.
Anyways this is just an ideas thread so whattaya reckon?

Good on yah Colapop, think its a great idea, give us a yell if you want some help. That sounds like a good time to have a get together, :sunny: place is not so busy. You know there is a nice Tavern in Mahia, Does good meals etc, a takeaway shop and store, and around on the north side of the peninsula is also a nice Cafe. The camping ground also has a shop.A good ride would be Mahia Wairoa,Frasertown,Tiniroto (pub stop) Gisborne and back to Mahia, good day ride:rockon:
Cheers.

Only a few bits... It rattles but hums nicely so all good.
The ride down the coast through Tauranga, BOP, East cape, Gisborne, Mahia is one of the most scenic in the country.

Mahia - beautiful spot. Was there a quite few years ago now for work and remember the place quite clearly, the pine trees, the deep water, clean air.
February next year...mmmm, that might be doable.

Upmarket?!? It's more like a vacant lot! If push comes to shove I'll organise a paddock close by with enough amenities to ensure it's not too feral. Hopefully should be able sort that out...

There are hot pools close buy also isnt there Col?....seem to recall something along those lines from when i was a kiddy....
Grub
1st April 2007, 21:02
Nasty & the Grub might be there. A bit of a quandry though ... what an awesome ride it would be but we would probably have to bring the car because the Nasty likes to camp in style. We'd need to buy a Goldwing, strip all the metal offit and then screw all the camping gear on to be able to get it there on two wheels:)
Now the hot pools could be an interesting ride. They're at Morere and there's a road from Kopuawhara over the hill to get there http://www.smaps.co.nz/nz/wairoa/mahia/tunanui+road/. I did it once int he car, can't remember if it was sealed ... all I remember is that it was covered in leaves so nobody else had been there for days it seemed :)

I have a funny feeling that road is no longer Grub. I'll ask my mum next time I talk to her. We did it once years ago when I was a naughty teenager who was avoiding the guys in blue and if I remember rightly there were at least a few patches of gravel, but would be an interesting road, never got a lot of use.

The road over the hill was basically gravel all the way last time I went over it 3 years ago and I presume its still there in much the same condition. Some logging was going on then with the trucks chopping it up but of course it was fun on the dirt bike. It is a narrow road which was interesting when I took the car through it.
Me and my Bro' had an extended adventure bike weekend there 3 years ago staying at the camp in its final season, but alas it is no more. I posted that weekend ride story here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=3047
I didn't post all the pics at the time so somewhere I will have pics of the road over the hill if I get around to hunting them out - fantastic views from that road if I remember rightly.
OK here's a couple of pics from that road.

Spoke to mother dearest a few weeks ago and she said it's still in use and still gravel. She also mentioned Doneraile Park would be a good day ride, with a fun road to ride, sealed the whole way. There's also the ride out to Lake Waikaremoana for those who enjoy a bit of gravel riding, and a beautiful spot.

perhaps we should warn Quartermile of your some what disturbed past....:dodge:
Love the ride out onto Mahia Peninsula itself. Where is farmachick these days, she only did 2 posts and disappeared, you still out there?
Railway stuff again too, an old wagon way out in the middle of nowhere.
Col get yourself a trail bike before you go to Mahia and you can double your pleasure.
Mrs KD where is your Mum?
Col too, you knew I was a weirdo eh, coz I was born in Wairoa you know!

Hey cool. Wises.co.nz reckons 492kms from Auckland to Mahia (and 475kms from Wellington to Mahia, you're right about being central). I know I'm a youngster, but might there be room for me somewhere? Maybe by next year I'll be in a good enough time and money situation to be able to do something like this.
Wicked idea.
