I dont really like to tell this story, but here goes anyway.
I used to row for Kings College in the U18 8+, we were down at the Secondary Schools National Champs in Twizel and we had already made it through to the finals and were one of the favourites to win (Kings College hasnt won Maadi in 54 years so the pressure was on) we were in the starting blocks in the Maadi final, the buzzer went and we did our racing start and on about my 5th stroke into the race my oar snapped about a foot down from the gate (these oars were custom made carbon fibre oars), due to the gear breakage in the 1st 100m of the, it race was called back into the blocks, and we were given our back up set of oars (which we hadnt trained with all season so the boat was not setup for them). After we had put the new set of oars in, we went back to the block and proceded to start the race again, we imediatley took to the front of the pack with our rivals Christs College and Hamilton Boys and from there we had a brilliant race, when it came to the last 500m we moved away from Hamilton Boys and it was between us and Christs College, it was neck in neck up into the last 100m in which Christs got us on the line, we came second by .93 of a second.
I feel that if I had not broken the oar, we would have won the Maadi cup.
