Doing my BHS

Hello,

I think that the time has come for me to do my BHS.

Before I booked, I was wondering if someone could tell me:

1. How far apart are the cones in the slalom?

2. How tight is the figure 8?

3. Whats a good place to do it? (I'd like to go to one of those Training + BHS Session tests, just in case.)

Cone weaving (slalom) - You must ride along a slalom course, weaving between cones placed 3.5 metres apart.

Cant help you with where sorry, as I live a bit further south, but you could ring up the LTSA and ask for someone in your area who does the BHS and discuss with them doing a lesson beforehand.

Not so close that it's all that hard. I had a lessons where I was taught the basic controls, then started doing some of the test drills. Did a quick practice in the second lesson then flew through the test :done: . And I'd never ridden a motorbike before.

From my personal experience I can only say good things about Riderskills plus feedback I got from others who I recommended him to.

For me the only exercise in the test I found difficult was the riding in a straight line where you have to do it in over 10 seconds, think my time was 11 seconds on the second attempt, first attempt was 9 seconds :)

I did my BHST and knew absolutely nothing about it before I got there. Just enjoy it, they will teach you everything you need to know... its really a peice of cake. :)

the slalom is 3.5m apart but .5m offset as well. practice by measuring out and doing a dumby(sp?) run. I dont actually remember doing a figure 8. probably did. When I did mine I was rather impatient with the guy as he was rattling off all sorts of stuff and he was telling me to go to the end of the run and accelerate as fast as I could (I stopped listening after that) and then said when he raises his hand perform an emergency stop.
Well I did the accelerating thing alright and then when he raised his hand I realised what was going on and jumped on the brakes. The POS bike I was on (borrowed from him) front brakes were useless and rear barely worked and I jumped on them hard. Back locked up and I slid for about 20m. He said he should fail me for locking the rear wheel but it looked good and bike remained striaght and in control throughtout the skid so let me pass. The hardest part of the test was the ride 18 metres in more than 10 secs thing cause the throttle kept sticking so I had to keep riding the clutch and the bike was revving the shit out of itself. I even took my right hand off to show him it wasn't me revving the crap out of his bike.

3.5m for the cones, thats way more than I thought it would be. Should be real easy :)

I misread the above post as 10m in 10 secs, so I went and measured the driveway and did 10m in 11 secs, so I don't predict problems in that part.

Yeah it's pretty easy, I practised on a CG110 before I went in there and I was used to the CG110 with the front brake which didn't really work and I jumped on this scooter and locked up the front for a sec when I grabbed a handful of brakes for the emergancy stop but he passed me anyway.:scooter:

I went to passrite in Penrose a couple of months ago, not knowing a thing about how to ride a bike... They seemed a decent bunch. Just off Church St there, so pretty close to you.

Think it cost around $200 from memory.. You got like 1 1/2 hours tuition before the BHS test (things like starting, stopping, turning etc etc), and then once you pass they take you down to LTSA in Mt Wellington and you can sit your learners licence scratchy...

I dunno how that cost compares anywhere else.. it might be expensive.. But I just wanted to get the whole thing done and dusted in one go and it was all good.

No figures 8's in there either.. woohoo.. :yes:

I would recommend you go to a proper testing agent. When I was looking at a new bike t a shop they offered to do my test for that sort of price all they wanted me to do was to drive up and down the driveway. But I learnt so much in a proper BHS course that riding up and down a driveway would never have taught me

When i did mine early 04' i went to the Northcote AUT carpark...where the Westpac ride ends....one on one with the Tutor, cost me $80 for an hour

it was phill turnbull, motorcycle dealer, in palmerston north. Proper test, did the slalom the 10sec test, braking while cornering etc etc. As others have said if you have the money it may be a good idea to do the full course and learn a little something. But you can do just fine being self taught.

in that case just find the cheapest place. Must be some where up here that does it cheap.

Hi Breakaway,
I did my BHS last weekend with Riderskills out at Rosebank Rd. They were really great as I haven't been on a road bike before.

Riding the slalom was one of the easiest parts of the test. For me the braking test where you have to get your front forks into the box was one I had a little trouble with as I tried the brake as late as I could and stopped just outside the box. I made sure I got it on my second go as otherwise that was it, no pass.

Listen to the instructions and you should be OK.:)

I've got my own bike for the test, so I don't predict any issues with that.

Seems like none of the testers ask to do a figure 8?

Hmm it sounds like there is a lot of variation in what's essentially a legal requirement of having your licence. Some people get two official shots at a task and that's it? That's pretty strict.

I just did my BHS this morning, and although the guy was very instructive he was also extremely relaxed, standing there rolling durries and telling us to keep doing it until we got it right. That was $130 for about 2 hours, probably 3/4 of that spent on the bikes and the rest watching a couple of DVDs.

fantastic. BHS stands for BASIC handling skills. If you cant do it first time EVERYTIME then you shouldn't be on the road. On the road it is not often you get a second chance at things.

Yes but for me i had never even sat on a motorbike when i did mine. It took a min before i got told about the clutch, i thought it was an auto (silly i know) and he was like 'you have two choices, you can do it right the first time and pass, or spend 120 min practicing with my help then do each skill 3 times correctly and pass.' i did each one 3 times....

I did mine last month in the AUT carpark with a tutor 1 on 1. He charges $50 for an hour lesson and $40 for the test. That was ample time to get familiar with the bike and controls and I passed no sweat.
