Finally got my new front brake pads, and on the way back to work I was 'helping them to bed in'. Problem was, instead of my usual 2-finger braking, I was using four fingers, and locked the front wheel up. If I'd been using two fingers, maybe I might have been able to save the front end, but instead I dropped it on the road.:weep:
No major damage - bent the brake pedal, cracked the fairing, busted the back indicator stalk, bent the front one.
fukkit.
Worst thing is I think I'll have to replace my helmet, as I hit my head hard on the road. There's not much visible exterior sign of the impact, but my head aches, and so does my neck, so I'd say the helmet should be binned.
No - that's not the worst thing; telling my wife will be...
I guess I should be thankful I'm not really hurt and that the bike's rideable and repairs shouldn't amount to much, but I'm really pissed off that it happened at all, as it was so silly and avoidable. Sigh....

Damn sorry to hear that man... What sorta helmet have you got? Make, model?

Sorry to hear that FS. Glad the damage is minimal.
Be careful if your headache starts to get bad enough that you feel like puking or you get tired or sleepy...
I decided to give my helmet to my boy to play with when I crashed although I could possibly have continued wearing it...
Voltaren is really good for those sore necks when you've banged your head. You can get it as a gel from the chemist.
and you're right - telling the wife will be the worst thing. Best you get it over and done with right away rather than have her know you spent all day after a crash not telling her.

Dude if it helps I could"borrow" your bike for a spin round the block.
As a very inexperienced rider It would be little wonder that I dropped your bike And of course I have no money so it'll be just one of those things.
Wifey might not be on ya case so bad then

Thanx for the kind words, guys - I don't deserve them.:o
MR: It's an AGV summat or another. Now about 4 years and 5 bins old. Overdue for replacement, I guess. In the other 4 bins, I don't think I hit my head, although I scraped the visor cover on the road in the first one (lowside).
Cno6: It's just a bit of a dull ache, but my keyboard dyslexia seems worse than normal. Hard to tell though what is from the bang and what's from this friggin head cold I've got.
XJ/FROSTY: Thanx for your kind offer, but there's not enuff damage to claim insurance on, so it's not too much of an expense at the moment.
I was wearing full gear - boots, leather pants, helmet, gloves, and the jacket has two levels of armour: kevlar pads on the outside, and hard/soft cups on the elbows and shoulders. Plus the shoulders and arms have leather over Cordura. It was a bit of a fag putting it all on, given I was only going a couple of km, but my other bins have all been near work too....
Must be something to that - two on the way to work, and three at lunchtime. Hmmmm......
Cajun: No holes or damage to the right radiator, but the fairing's pushed against it a little. I wasn't going fast by the time I dropped it, so the damge is just from falling on the road, I guess.
Devil: Witnesses? Yeah, it was on Great North Rd by the shops, and I binned it right in front of some roadworkers, so they asked me if I was OK, and put some cones around me while I got the bike off the road. They should've just clapped and cheered and given me heaps. Must've given them a bit of a start me throwing it on the road right in front of them.

Truth: combination of new grabby pads (SBS), slightly damp road, camber on road, using all fingers intead of just two, and general hamfistedness. Oh yeah - and a dull brain (could I blame that on this head cold?):spudwhat:

LouI'm having problems finding a replacement right rear indicator. New is $110, and available ex-Japan (2 weeks) so I'm trying to track down a secondhand one. If I don't get the bike fixed, my wife'll want to take the car to go to my sister's wedding instead of the bike (her idea!), so I don't really want to wait two weeks. Might have to buy some glue on the way home....

Oooh, that sucks. Commiserations.
Remember to claim the replacement helmet on home contents insurance. Aren't you *so* glad you were wearing one?
Hope you're not concussed, keep a careful eye on yourself. See a physio if the neck starts to hurt or headaches appear. Easy to compress a vertebra falling off like that.
A head cold does affect your riding. I remember seeing some research abstract somewhere or other indicating that having a cold or flu gave a greater chance of unpleasant incidences than below-the-limit drinking before driving.

Oooh, that sucks. Commiserations.I suck. But I get what I deserve.
Remember to claim the replacement helmet on home contents insurance. Aren't you *so* glad you were wearing one?Is it worth it? My "no claims" bonus and the excess are probably WAAAY more than the cost of a helmet. And it's only a $50 helmet, remember. Mustn't overcapitalise my defective head. Maybe if I hadn't been wearing one, I might've knocked some sense into myself. Mebbe.

OR - I could just not tell her! The indicator's fixed as good as new - got a metre or two of sellotape wrapped around it tying it to the Ventura rack. And if I kick the front indicator on the other side so they match, she'll never know. You know how women are...

I didn't know home contents insurance had 'no claims' bonuses. My excess is $200.
And it's only a $50 helmet, remember.
Are you SURE? AGV is, after all, a premium brand (ahem). It's a pity your head shape has changed in the last few years, of course, thereby requiring you to purchase a $1200 Arai to achieve an equivalent level of protection.
OR - I could just not tell her ... if I kick the front indicator on the other side so they match, she'll never know.
Reminds me of my personal action plan for when I upgrade the FXR: arrive home after sunset, park the new bike out the back, wait and see how many days it takes before she notices it.

Man sorry to about you little off firestromer, gald you are mostly okay as well. I've seen these really trick a/m indicators, think they're $80 a side, stainless finish tiny but bright, look gorgeous, kerry does them at motohaus. I'd get them myself if i hadn't just blown my bionus on new tyres, chain n sprockets and the front brakes with new seals and braided lines on the way, shit adds up pretty quickly.
Hope you get it all sorted and you get over your cold sooner than later.

Deepest sympathies Firestormer. I had a similar event about a month ago. We can compare fairings if you go on the Waikato Ride.
Sounds to me like you have concussion. No fun at all. Watch out for the sudden moods swings (rage, depression) over the next couple of days.
And spend more than 50 feckin dollars on the next lid!

If you are interested FS, I have a AGV Xvent lid in brand new condition. Size is ML. Clear & tinted faceshields. Bought for G/F - long since XG/F. Used only a dozen times at most. Size is too big for me.

hey - not sure about the std indicators - but if you decide to do aftermarket - talk to lou about some buell ones.
they are exactly the same as the KTM ones (nice) and sooo cheap.
i usually have a pair on hand at all times - but just used mine on a friends damages SRX 600. from memory, they were $25 ish each!

Taa-daaaa!!
Here I am, alive and almost well.
Had a few unanticipated aches and pains this morning, like a sore ankle, and a pulled muscle down my right side, but not too bad. Head still aches, but not bad. Looks like my helmet hit the road where the corner of the visor aperture is - both the visor and the cover have gravel dings in 'em. Also, the helmet is hardish there, due to the pivots for the visor, strap fastening points, etc.
Took the day off work today because of the head cold more than anything else. Wife was off sick too. This is the first time we've come down with a virus at exactly the same time - within hours at the most! Weird. Of course, she went a bit spack at me last night, more because I didn't tell her about dropping the FahrtSturm until about 8 or so.
Had a good look at it today, and did some fixing. Everything looks back to almost how it was, apart from some scrapes on the fairing, and the crack, which it turns out was a pre-existing crack, not glued properly! The confirminators managed to be ressembled and straightened, due to the rubber mounts, so apart from the road grating omn the underside of the front one, they look OK again. Brake pedal required some heating with the hot-air gun on high, then some judicious bending with a 12" wrench and a monkey wrench. Muffler filed up nicely with a fine file - can still see it, but it's OK. Covered some of the scrapes/scratches with lurid red nail polish - not quite "Italian Red" but better than it was. I'll pick up some touch up paint in spray can sometime and do it properly.
So it cost me nothing to "fix" it - it has some minor battle scars, but that's what you get for being a plonker.
Oh yeah - and I polished off some black rubber marks from my boots - one on the left of the tank, and one near the front indicator, and another on the right cowling (but that might have been there before).
AMPS: (Lou) Thanx for the offer of the Buell indicators. If I do any more asphalt surfing, sounds like they'll be HEAPS better than the $110 Honda ones (fecking rip-off they are!)
Yamahamamaman: Yup I'm interested in the helmet - it's my size, by chance! PM me with the details. Mine's 'all right', but I should really bin it. It's over four years old, and a bit dodgy. I know AGV's are supposedly crap, but my head's become moulded to the shape.:msn-wink:
Loosebruce: Can't go see Kerry about the indicators - he's the one who fitted my pads, and it's too damned embarassing telling him I canned off less than 2 minutes after riding off...
And thanks everyone for your kind wishes and helpful advice. I was feeling very dispirited last night, and thinking I was dumb sticking with motorcycling. But the camaraderie makes it well worth while. I must meet some of you soonest.:not:
