Hmm...I think I only just missed out on meeting 'Flyin' (Sam right?)...but his name cropped up alot during my apprentice-ship. Rode over with the crew last year though.

I think about Sam every time I go round *that* corner. And also quite often while sitting in the sun at the Fush's courtyard. He was a great kid.

Thanks for the reminder Jim. I've prostrated myself in front of the CDFO and received a passout. I'll be there.

Excellent prostrating technique!
I will see if I can make it Jim. Although I never knew Flying I have read his posts, he sounded like a great guy.... very sad.
Will probably meet you all in Martinborough.
Sorry, can't make it now. I double booked myself and have just realised.
Can somebody enlighten the rest of us who weren't around two years ago but might like to join a memorial ride?
It might become The Cruisy Sunday Morning Ride (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=48572) for this week.

Yes it is 8:30.
I will be leaving Masters about 8am. A couple of Rapa Riders have expressed interest in this ride, so we will either meet you guys at the top of the hill, or in Feathers by the petrol station. See you there.

OK folks, there's been a few requests for some more organisation:
8:30 Rimutex.
8:45 Leave Rimutex.
9:15 Leave the 'takas caprpark.
9:25 Turn right at Featherston.
9:35-40 Meet up at Flying Fish.
10:30 To Gladstone via the "back" road.
11:00 The corner.
From there there are 3 ways to get to Masterton if you want to.

Have you been told lately? :scooter:
The times are all screwed up, the regular Welly Sunday ride starts at 10am at Rimutex so we have to support that. This ride could have left at that time too.
The Classic Bikes Show isn't this weekend, it's not until the 26-27th at the Horticultural Hall Lower Hutt

I've had the Memorial Ride up for 2 months Grub. I moved it from the 29th to this weekend because of the Ambulance run. This ride was planned well before the Cruisy Sunday ride appeared.

Absolutely two seperate rides and for different reasons. Thanks to Jim2 for organising it. :sunny:
Rapa riders we are leaving about 8amish... (ok so I might be a tenny bit late as usual) We will head up the hill and wait.. (if you can persuade me too.. haha).
Was asked if we should wear clear visors... I am sure that as this is a memorial ride that it wouldnt be a problem to wear dark visors?
:sunny: Oh and the weather is stunning today... and looks like its going to be like this tomorrow. :sunny:
I will be there.
I will use my big stick to persuade lissa
I will be there.

Doesnt take much to persuade me really... a big stick might be a bit hard to carry or bring, maybe an offer of a coffee will do the trick :)

No worries mate. We found the spot without you.
Left three sick family members at home (same thing as you) and buggered off this morning.
Nice uneventful ride (well once we got over the slippery rollerskate rink that was the takas this morning).
Good to put faces to some of the names.
Here's some pics at the corner (well up a bit from it)...
Pity you couldnt make it Jim2. Was good weather as promised... absolutely stinking hot actually. I have some photos will post soon.

Damn good to ride with a different crew for a change...and meet new people :niceone:
It was a good day.. No mishaps except finding my mirror missing between Masterton and Carterton..

What a spectacular autumn's day to be out on a bike.
I managed to burn $40 worth of hydrocarbons, round trip from Lower Hutt. That's a sign of a good time...:scooter:

Don't let anyone ever tell you a GS500F is a slow bike.
Nice work punting that bike around today Ronin. Good cornering speeds.
Madness and Skelstar - good riding with you guys too. Perfect pace for me today.
I really enjoyed the ride today, riding at the back on my own... and its quite pleasent that early in the morning.
Thanks Rifferman for pointing out the fork seals on my bike need replacing and also got to get a new mirror. Good to have some people around me who actually know something about bikes :)
Thanks Ronin for not going on about my 6th gear too much ;)
Cheers for the ride today guys and gals, cheers to Elle for going slow enough for a noob like me to not get lost.
Whilst riding the Takas was sh$thouse, my front tyre slipping out at nana speeds on the way over the weather was beaut in the Wai and was a nice ride - damn some of you fellas ride quick! found my top speed on the Hyo out Gladstone way and its about 80 less than what you guys were doing.
Nice to see some new faces and actually have a small enough group to be able to speak with most of you.
Now so i remember names we had:
Bull - Danny(me)
Riffer - Simon
Lissa - Melissa
Elle - Michelle
Skelstar - Sean(sp?)
David.Visser - Dave
Biggles1 - Peter
Ronin - You think after meeting you about 4 times id know your bloody name - Shaun
Madness - You did tell me but ive forgot
Good ya Dave for getting out on a ride with the KBers, plenty more rides where that one came from too.
Cheers for organising the ride Jim - pity you couldnt be there too(get well soon)

You certainly make that bike go if it really is only 40hp!
Well all the info I can find says that claimed 39.39 hp @ 9500 rpm and 24.59 Torquee things at 7500 rpm
The dyno chart is from a '99 with a vance & hinz and a dynojet kit.

Apologies I wasn't able to attend - I was reading Social Policy most of the day (oh yay  ).

found my top speed on the Hyo out Gladstone way and its about 80 less than what you guys were doing.
So you must have been doing about 20kph, cause no responsible KBer would be riding faster than 100Kph:yes:.
Unfortunately I couldn't make this ride, but I did reflect on the reason for it.
I've also been thinking...I wonder if the October ride (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=713288#post713288) I normally organise should become a KBer memorial ride to honour our fallen mates? Each of the major centres could put on a ride to coincide?
I'd be interested in others' thoughts before posting a separate thread.
Trudes
7th May 2007, 18:16
Personally, Just my opinion, so don't shoot me for it anyone, I liked the October ride because it was like a celebration that the weather was getting nicer (OK, it rained last year, but it wasn't cold!) and a cheerful get together for us all to get our leathers out of the mothballs etc.
I think turning that ride into a memorial ride would take away a little bit of the "fun" of the October ride and make it a bit sombre, we could have another ride sometime later in the year maybe as a memorial ride??

7th May 2007, 18:35
More and more people who never knew Sam, UBruce, LBruce, Darryl will be along on these rides and perhaps the significance will diminish?
Trudes
7th May 2007, 18:39
Well the whole reason I didn't come along on the ride on Sunday was because I didn't know Sam (or read any of his posts) and didn't feel like it was appropriate for me to go (not having a dig at anyone who went and didn't know him), just kinda feels like going to a stranger's funeral for the drinks and nibbles.
skelstar
7th May 2007, 18:59
I guess I was in two minds about going, but I kinda thought that I was paying respects to a young guy that was learning to ride just before I came on the scene. Not sure what I mean
I'll admit that I was glad when Deano and J600 turned up since they had actualy ridden with Sam.

I kind of see it as paying respects to a fellow KBer. Even though I never knew him, I went as a support for those that did and the ones that maybe couldnt attend in person. I did have second thoughts about it, but I am glad I went.
I do agree that the October Ride should be kept as it is, a celebration of the summer weather ahead.
I had a few reasons for going. I know 2 other riders who have died at that corner. I may never have met Sam but he was a fellow rider and for me, taking the time to pay my respects is important.
I thought on Sunday that perhaps having a KB memorial day would be a good thing. A day for us to gather together, go for a ride and remember the fallen.
The start of December seems appropriate.
