View Full Version : Looking after 2 teenage girls - May need advice!!

After easter I am having my niece 14 and her friend 16 coming to stay. They are country girls - so coming to the big smoke of Welly. I live right in the heart of the city. Now they are nice girls! (Beautiful looking too!!)

What do they eat (at that age I ate bugger all). One rule is that they are not to bring anyone back to my apartment while I am at work. I will be meeting them for lunch.

Last time I looked after a 16 yr old male teenager. I was told some stories that were very plausable to me but apparently I got "sucked in". I'm too trusting I'm told!! lol

Any advice or things I should know would be appreciated. I can't use my own experience at that age - god forbid I'd be grey and balding!! The girls are not totally ignorant of life.

I am excited about it - god they call me Aunty!! so not use to that!!:sunny:

Buy them each a chasity belt.........

Ok how long are they staying for....... a day, a week or a month?

Since they are country kids, feed them junk food like McDonalds..... costly but they wont be used to that sort of food. Not too much coke etc as you do want them to sleep at night time.

Set up a few video camera's around your home before hand, to catch them out bringing home boys.

Bolt the windows shut, so that they can't let the boys in late at night and also so they can't get out to wander the streets and check out the nightlife......

Cos you are having two stay with you, girls can have the odd 'tall' story to tell as well. As they will be winding the other up to make their story bigger than the other one. So take it all with a grain of salt.

To keep them occupied, take them clothes shopping and that in itself is one whole day taken care of. Take them to the movies. Take them to Te Papa - there goes another day.

Does Wellington have anything down there like we have up here?: Rainbow's End

Good Luck with the stay over.... and do think back to what you got up to..... and now double that or even triple that.....

Oh and No smacking and putting them into 'Time Out' cos someone will dob you in.

Te Papa might be closer. There is not much in Te Rapa that would appeal to teenage girls.

:dodge:

No teenage daughters, but I certainy have looked after some of my Nieces ..... its all lies! Especially the bit about being allowed to do it at home!

You will need all your wits about you!

There's a lot of difference between a 13 and 14 year old teenagers and those of say 16 17. My advice regardless of age is to lay down some guidlines.

Nothing wrong with giving them some responsibility in what they want to do but your do need to know where they are going and to inform you of their where abouts and time they are due home. There should definatley be a time when they must be back home. No excuses if they ring up and want to go to the party, clubbing etc. That however will depend on age. Other than that just enjoy their company

One thing they should go to is the Reading Cinemas in town, with the Lazy boys etc. That will be totally different from the cinemas they are used to!

Welly is a great place to go when you are a teenager, you can spend days shopping!

Send them on the train to Porirua (if that mall is still good!!), I always loved going on the train when I lived down there, or even to Dressmart as it is also right next to the tracks... but if you live in town send them for a walk to the shops in town.. that used to tire me out!!

Te Papa is awesome!! They can always go on the rides, or spend hours walking around. Natural disasters and the one based on how NZ used to be were always my faves.

If they are outdoor type of girls then they could always hire those crocodile bikes by Te Papa and cruise around the waterfront. There is also a rock climbing place there if I remember rightly!

Basically all they need is one thing to do a day which will keep them busy, then they will be less likely to cause any trouble!! And if you sit down and have a cruiser, or a pulse with them they are less likely to sneak stuff into your place or do anything naughty!! It is always fun chatting to older people when you are 16 and having a drink!

At that age they MAY not be too old for -
Go-Karting in Petone, opposite Animates
10 Pin bowling
Aqautic Centre in Upper Hutt, maybe include train trip out there

Wellingtonian's call it "Parliament".
It has lots of "fun rides" where you can be taken for a ride and have the crap scared out of you. As with all amusement parks, you have to pay $$$'s for this treatment.
There is also the "House of Horrors" which is VERY frightening and NOT to be taken lightly... This room is labeled "PM's Office".:shit:

Be VERY afraid.

Teenage girls can be very image consious and more aware of eating healthy. Best thing to do before hand is ask their mum what sort of food they like.

Swimming is a great idea. Just don't fall into the trap of thinking you have to spend heaps of money taking them places everyday.

Valium, sprinkle some crushed pills over their breakfast cereal and no problems. lol

Yep, that's the best recommendation yet. You will also need a good supply for yourself once they have gone back home to help recover your sanity.
And yes, i have been there and done that so can speak from experience.

I second reading cinemas ... you also have freyburg pools .. and kibirnie aquatic centre ... set the rules straight at the beginning and don't bend on them ... firm with love ... also take them out for dinners .. e.g. mexican ... and stuff they wouldn't get locally .... that sorta shite :)

Make sure they understand your rules/guidelines on the first day!!
Warn them about drink spiking, areas to avoid, for their own safety.
Trust them, respect them and above all else enjoy having them there. teenagers are such fun and can teach us so much if only we are open to listening!

One night be sure to order something in (pizza etc). It's such a novelty for country kids when someone DELIVERS FOOD RIGHT TO YOUR DOOR! :gob:

And of course it does depend what kind of kids they are. Some girls will spend all day shopping and others will get bored within an hour. Give them a range of things to do, the means to get from one place to another (eg train, bus tickets & timetables) rules about where they need to be by when (having lunch with them is a great idea). Then let them go!

With two of them it's better - they'll be safer together and keep each other company. And hopefully at least one of them will have a bit of sense!

I live with my 14 year old cousin. Give em something to do, like baking, or going for walks. They're so much more cheerful that way, keep em off the computer!

Ill help you, when can i come over :P just joking.

Ive noticed with chicks my age if they are doing something what they really enjoyed that normally are much more mature than the ones who have no hobbies at all, except for getting sloshed! what isnt too bad once and a while anyways as pointed out before make sure you find them something to do and it will be a fun expierence :).

Buy them a day rover on the trains and send em up to paraparaumu to the mall etc, they can stop at porirua on the way back. Most places don't have commuter trains so it's quite novel for a lot of people.

Parliament is worth a visit, likewise Te Papa / readings etc but you know all that. Don't forget the good old cable car and if they are fit, get them to climb Mt Vic. If it's this week, Exodus gym is having an open week - they will be blown away by it.

Fergs kayaks have a climbing wall and rent kayaks.

Whatever you do make sure that you tell them not to ask the police for directions if they get lost.

They'd be safer asking the nearest patched gang member.

Very good!!!

Well thanks for your input - "hide the laptop" is a good one. I figured that for booze they need ID so I'm safe there. Bit of a dilemma there, cos I don't drink and I know that they do have it at home. I guess if they want one they can buy it and have it at home with me present.

Since I wrote the thread the 16 yr old lad now 17 has a couple of days of work so said he would look after them for a day - he's now very mature and a great guy. He rang me the other day and talked for an hour!!

I'll put together a list of things mentioned above for them.

I guess my parents survived my teenager-hood cos they didn't know 1/4 of what I was up to. I remember telling my father the truth once - never did it again. The lecture lasted 2 hours long!!

1) Chain them up.
If that fails...
2) They can hang out with my son. *Wait* Before you (all) assume that there is something untoward in that (those of you that know me) understand that he is not me. He is on the student council at school, is a senior member of the first 15 and attends church regularly. These in themselves do not the man make (Yoda) but if he wasn't my son he'd be someone I'd trust (and I've told my daughter I'll be 3 feet away with a large rusty knife at all times!)
or,
3) Give them some basic rules and trust them - you can't do too much else.
