Just looking for some info with regards to the Yamaha XT660X.

For those that have or have had one, what mods did you find worked best for you? Im looking for more in terms of handing and power rather than looks and comfort.

Otherwise how do you find the bike in general?

And motards only go on the road :D

so why do they go over dirt ramps etc when racing them?

(if the mods agree with my two friends here please feel free to move the thread)

Hi

I just brought a 2005 xt660x. Power doesn't even feel close to a ttr600 I also test rode (my arms are 20mm longer after riding the ttr - pity my back said 'NO' to the kickstart).

The 660 handles the road brilliantly and ride comfort is very good but power could only be called adequate - I think about 44 hp stock (hopefully a set of cans will at least make me think I am going faster).

Modified with cans, fuel system mods and airbox/filter mods they seem to dyno at about 50hp.

Don't know how 'dual purpose' they are - I am keen to try some different tires and find out - front tire choice is very limited.

Fuel Injection is very 'snatchy' from being too lean - there are various low buck fixes that make a big difference - have a look at xt660.com - it has all the info you could ask for.

cheers

Mark

I rode the XT660X and enjoyed it, i dont think it is very dual purpose at all, unless you intend to get the XT660T and have a set of motard rims spare...

Someone said to me that they are having some sort of engine trouble as they get higher up in the km's too... but i hear what you are saying about the power... the handling of the bike was a nice way to utilise that power though.

However, i ended up riding a WR450F motard later in the week, which is nearly 50kg lighter and had atleast 15-20hp more than the XT... no doubt which one was more fun! Only draw back of the WR is that it needs to be rebuilt every 5000km or so, and it doesnt come standard as a motard.

I have however opted to stay with the sportsbikes for the meantime, my friend has kindly said the WR is available from time to time for a short blat around the local roads so im sure my motard bone won't get too itchy :)

In reality the 660 is a motard in name and appearance only. Its too heavy and doesn't have enough power to be 'a slide round corners, pop wheelies down straights' serious motard weapon.

But Its a good all rounder that can sit comfortably at 100k's for hours (wouldn't want to do that on a hard core trail/mx/motard bike like the wr450 or even something tamer like a drz400 - too buzzy and not stable enough in cross winds etc) - I would also imagine the 660 could keep up with sport bikes quite well in the really twisty stuff. Horses for courses as usual.

Do you have any idea what the engine trouble was? Yamaha big singles (I thought) generally have a name for being super reliable don't they?

Thats what i was lead to believe too from other peoples experience... can't exactly remember what the problem was, there wasn't anything about it on the XT660 forum when i looked

I have had a XT660X for 2 1/2 years now. Mods done Power Commander, stage 1 & 2 filters with moded airbox, front spring spacers, Carbon Can exhaust system, removing the orginal cats save you 8kgs in weight. On the Dyno I got 53HP with a custom fuel map. I love my bike & will be buying the new 2008 XT660X when it hits the bike shops next year.

Year models 04 to 05 had fuelling problems & is easily fixed up with an up graded Engine ECU, mine was done under warranty. There is also a modified TPS that sorts out the cutting out issue.

Apart from the above hick ups the bike is a fun bike to ride. It is not a true motard but can stand it's ground through the twistys.

It was 51.8 HP before the 700cc stage 1 cam conversion, keen to see what the gains are after the conversion.

Some more photos of the conversion.

Shit, that's possible?!

I've ridden the latest, fuel injected Raptor and it was effing nuts! Are you able to boost the XT to that kinda raw power?

That's some serious modification! Keep us posted how you get on.

I have a Aprilia Pegaso Trail that has a similar motor to the XT. I had to fit a Power Commander to get it to run right and now (with a K&N filter) it runs really well. Power is sufficient for my needs and certainly better than the F650 it replaced.

Cheers

All those mods are great I have looked at 700 barrel option also.
I got off my F650 Dakar and onto the big wheel 660, it handled much better and delivered the power down low unlike the BMW as a result I have put an order in the UK for the new Tenere which I will try and find a way to shed a few Kgs.
I love them and they are Japanese {sort of}.

Tha raptor barrel does not fit straight on, I had to machine the casings by 0.98mm. Next time I would machine the bottom of the sleave. I also had to make a cut away for a breather at the bottom of the cylinder & slot the 6mm holes on the side of the Raptor barrel

Also the Raptor Hot Cam needs some extra bits from the raptor. Sprocket decompressioner & pin. I bought a used Raptor compelte cam from a bike breaker in the States US$66.00 posted, the extra parts from Yamaha was US$330.00. The Stage 1 Hot cam was US$150.00 posted.

After this conversion to 700cc and the hot up what are you expecting/hoping to see at the rear wheel(hp)?

Not to sure, if I get 5 or 6 HP gain I would be happy. I did not go for the stage 2 cam as I still want the bottom end torque. The stage 2 gives 6 hp on it's own. So a 2mm bigger bore, 10:1 to a 11:1 piston & stage 1 cam should give a 5hp gain. Giving a total with all my other mods a 25% gain in power & torque

I broke my achillies tendon last weekend & had surgery. I am out of action for a while. The bike was surposed to go on the Dyno this past Monday, I will get on the dyno soon.

If you can squeeze 25% out of it that would be a pretty healthy jump in the go department, bugger about the archillies tendon man.

This was my dyno run before the 700cc mod, I was sorting the fuel map when I fitted the these mods. That was with PCIII Carbon can pipes DNA stage 1 & 2 filters, snorkel removed AIS blocked off.

I still have to run the 700cc conversion on the dyno, I will do it as soon as I can ride again.

Well the results are out for the XT700 conversion, I am still testing a few different camshafts over the next few days, so more dyno sheets to come.

Just short of 57HP, 56.92 @ 6500RPM. I have lost a bit of the bottom end but gained alot on the top.

Those charts look great. What sort of difference has it made to the ride?

Have you ridden the KTM prestige - I wonder how this compares power and flickability?

I also wonder if this mod would affect the fuel range as I am looking for a daily commute and this is important to me.

Great work - really helpful to motard noobs like me, cheers.

The bike pulls real hard from the mid range all the way to the rev limiter, loosing only 2HP off peak power at the limiter.

I am back on the Dyno tomorrow testing different cams, I am looking for more torque in the low to mid range.

I have not ridden the KTM.

I have a LCD Dyno jet display & can change fuel maps on the run at any time or speed, it can store up to 5 different fuel maps. I have set up 2 different maps for this mod, map 1 fully mapped between 12.8:1 to 13:1 air/fuel ratio for best performance & map 2 good fuel consumption 13.5:1 in the mid RPM range for work & back.

hi guys,

I am really getting desperate with my new XT660X 2008 and I hope someone can help me

2 months ago a problem begun and while I was driving, the bike was choking like it was going to go off and then switch on again... I took it to my mechanicer and put it on the computer and found that there was a problem with the ECU... 6 MONTHS OLD BRAND NEW BIKE AND HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE ECU :gob:
Anyway, he fixes that and the bike was fine for two months or so...

Yesterday however, while i was driving again, the rpm suddenly increased and whenever I left my hand off the handle, the rpm were still high... I am not happy at all until now and I problem keep coming i will have to sell it...

The thing is I dont want to because I love driving it... It is so fun to drive...

my mechanicer is really testing my patience telling me that I am stressing too much.. I wouldn't be F****** stressed if you fixed the problem and pay attention to my concerns...

Anyone having the same problem?????????

Throttle position sensor. There was a recall on earlier bikes. Simple replacement, should be under warranty.
