So.. I just got my new airhorn going... Here's the story:
I was following this guy on his scooter today. He was going 30km/h. He was also texting. This asshole decides to jam on his brakes, without indication (didnt help he had NO BRAKE LIGHTS), and turn right. I managed to swerve to the left, narrowly missing him. Whilst I was missing him, i had my horn blasting. I checked in my mirror and he was lying on the ground looking very very dazed.
He must have freaked, you dont expect a bike to let off such a big noise! Considering he was riding one handed I think he must have let go in shock. It was rather amusing, left me feeling a little guilty though.
Actually, I'm not guilty. If you are the scooter owner who had this happen to you, and you happen to be reading this.. You are an irresponsible idiot. I do hope the fall grazed you up a bit so you realise that texting whilst riding isnt a smart thing to do. Oh, and get some brake lights and learn how to use your indicator ya mongol!! You're lucky I wasnt in a cage..

Yeah unfortunately I didnt really want to stop. Stopping sometimes means cops. Cops means checking bike. Bike needs WOF and REGO (both getting done this week). No WOF no REGO means fine. Fine means not good on pocket. Not good on pocket means no food. No food equals death.
So... If I stopped I would have died. My defence, I'm sticking to it.

Love the logic - bit like that logic that says that everything you eat must be good for you cause at the end of the day it's all derived from vegetables. i.e. I like to eat steak. Steak comes from cows. Cows eat grass which is a "vegetable", therefore eating loads of steak must be healthy. Get your 5-a-day fruit and veg folks.
Oh yeah and well done for blasting the texter.

Yeah I thought my post sounded like I was quite close. The fact is that I was definitely within a very safe stopping distance. Another fact is that 3 seconds comes at you pretty quickly when you dont realise the other bike is slowing down suddenly. No brake lights means SUPRISE! So in this case I would have to disagree with you. The "emergency swivle" was not really "emergency" at all, just a swerve to the safest part of the road... An idiot like this could have gone anywhere for all I know.

Bloody good job I say. The last thing we need is a report like this to appear in the paper and everyone jumps on the bandwagon that all bikers are irresponsible and more controls are heaped on us. My 2c's worth (should really be 10c's as they've done away with the 2c but its only a short post)

Nice one, never have a prob with a scooter going in the gutter, yer should of put yer boot in and as he went, grabbed his phone and added "will be another 15min" to the text and tossed it back to him.
If the cunt came off, he came off, not your problem. He had a duffer scooter, was riding like a gorm, texting his boyfriend to put the coffee on and probably wondering why his g-string was pinching...he was an accident in waiting, like most scooter cretins I have the unpleasant duty of watching hurl themselves to their deaths in the bus lanes every morning/evening commute.

He might commute to work on a scooter but ride a bigger bike on the weekend. More people on scooters = less cars. No I don't ride a scooter but I have thought about one for zipping down to the shops. Still texting and riding is dumb.

Good point Terbang... I see it as a warning/defensive device... to say "oi Im over here, dont drive over me and my bike..." NOT... "f**k off wanker stop texting, and get out of my way"

Is a horn a warning device or a venting of frustration device..?
A horn is a pipping device when waving cordially to your friends in the cafe, cos it seems to do fuck all else to cage or dumbass scooter riders (unless it happens to 50 foot diameter fog horns as used in this example).
Personally my two brothers herald my frustrations, as could be attested by the ashen asians face that got such a rumble when she pulled into bus lane in front of me this morning...but we digress
Yeah mate, you should have made sure he was ok... ...oh, hang on, you did...he got up right? At least you could have turned around and run him down again?

Yes.
Texting while riding, well I knew it would happen sooner or later.
One thing I have learned over the years....
There really is no limit to dumb.
Of course, riding without WOF and REGO is pretty bloody silly too, especially when combined with not helping out a fellow biker. What you should have done is picked him up and got him off the road, followed by a 10 minute lecture on safe riding habits.

Was a fellow biker involved? I thought he was on a scooter?
And by the looks of most scooter meat bombs out there, they cant get hurt falling off....at least thats what I assume they think as they wear their high heals/jandals/bare feet/shorts/t-shirts/skirts/skull cap helmets while pinning the scooter through the traffic.
Just 'cos they have two wheels they aint my fellow biker...my fellow bikers are defined by their actions.
This said, I am a compassionate guy, and I would also stopped to make sure he at least stood up, then carried on while placing a scooter sticker on the gas tank.

Not having a go - but that's where we disagree. The dude's on 2 wheels and likely enjoys many of the same freedoms and fun aspects of riding those on bigger bikes do.
I agree there are some dimwits out there, and after you've picked 'em up after doing something incredibly dumb they can go on to learn, improve and possibly move more into your definition of a biker.
I'd like to think the future for that guy could include fun on 2 wheels - on whatever he chooses to ride. I'd also like to think he learned not to text while riding (God that's dumb). There have been a few others in here doing some seeming dumb things - and they get lambasted in proportion to the stupidity of their actions, but I can promise you for every one that falls, I'd be there to pick them up.

Hmm this is maybe where I differ from a cultural point of view... if I see someone is on trouble, be it in a car, on a bike... in fact I dont care what they commute in, I will stop and help if I can...
Stuff, the fellow biker crap... they are people, if you binned you would hope people would help you...
Yes I know he was doing something stupid, and was not really hurt... but fuck it, I hate this "I dont care, they are not my problem" attitude...
But hey, people who know me know Im a softy!

Texting and riding is dumb. Falling off because you got too involved in yer texting while riding is even dumber. Dumb and Dumber eh.. Given the opportunity I would, like most here, wish for the opportunity to have a word in this lads ear as we share the road and the biker reputation with him and also pay (well nearly all of us) taxes and ACC levys ETC... However when we see someone doing something stupid, for example texting and riding, we need to resist the urge to vent our frustrations in a manner that could make things worse (driving up to him and honking an air horn in his ear) or else we ourselves fall under the common banner of 'Road Rage'. Whats worse texting or road rage..? The guy fell of because he was texting and riding and also because of the startle factor of having an air horn shoved up his arse. The startle factor in this case was a deliberate act (honking a horn) but it could easily have been one of my kids crossing the road. If he hasn't learnt anything from this incident then I suspect he will sometime in the near future, add to the credibility of Darwin's theory of evolution.

I got pulled up for doing that on Monday. Was let off as the cop "wasnt to sure if its illegal or not". I told him that it wasnt as it didnt say bus lane ONLY, told him I worked for MoJ so I must be right. I think he was a little confuzzled and just let me go...
As for the poor scooter-er how do you know if he hadnt only just got the thing and was a learner? What if he had had a mechanical fault etc? How do you know it wasnt one of us. I live in Karori and I might have just bought myself a scooter! I reckon that you should stop for anyone who needs assistance, its good karma for one! Who knows you might need help one day....

This guy is not just incredibly dumb, he's below amoebic. I dont want this sort of cunt on the roads I share, whatever vehicle they use. I would put money on this guy texting again when he gets back on his scooter.
I'd like to think the future for that guy could include fun on 2 wheels
Well there's another point we disagree on...I'd like to think this guy has a future in a Siberian township where his style of riding wont effect me
but I can promise you for every one that falls, I'd be there to pick them up.
Ok, I like you MDU, you say some good shit on here and I can understand where you are coming from in your opinion. Admittedly, I am being overly callous in my viewpoint and this will definately stem from the daily grind of seeing people on scooters that have no idea that they are on a bike. They are still in cage mode. To survive I make sweeping generalistic rules based on experience, and avoiding scooters is one of them. I've met some great guys on scooters, but they are few and far between in the fumbling mass of meat bombs that generally occupy a scooter seat.
Now, that said, I am not generally a callous person. If I saw someone in trouble whether on a bike or not I would try to help and that would include this complete tw@ and only after knowing he was uninjured would I get complete satisfaction that the tosser got what he deserved.
As for a fellow biker? More like fellow human. But on the road, someone has to earn that title, as they do trust and respect. I will not associate with people being this ignorant on a road that doesnt take prisoners. This is what I mean by my previous statement.

i often watch high school kids txting on their way past work while scootering. dickheads. im glad this one got what was comin to him, without the aid of a car. sure...stop and make sure hes ok, and the scoot can be ridden. and then knock him on his ass again and give him a right bollocking!

Goodness theres a lot of varied opinions here! Thats OK. Im usually not like this. I am a very courtious rider/person and do stop and help people. Its in my nature. A few personal things were going down and I didnt really feel like stopping. Betcha it won't happen again.
I'm not usually anti scooters but since all the students got into town things have gone haywire. Ive seen guys texting, causing road hazards and generally just being idiots. I supppose this was the pinical of my frustration.
I appreciate your concerns about me not stopping for the guy. I would have stopped if things were serious. But it seems he came off very lightly and it probably would have shocked the hell out of him. I know for a fact that if I stopped he would have started ripping into me. Who knows what I would have done. It was a bad day BEFORE I encountered the idiot and I was worried if I had stopped and he had ripped into me, then the boys in blue definitely would have payed a visit. *Envisions scooter stuck in a tree with guy attatched to bike on motorway*
RE: No WOF or REGO. Yes I agree its a silly thing to do. I just had the bike fixed up (only owned it a few weeks now), its running really nicely and is completely safe. Only thing I actually need for a WOF is a mudguard.... It would be concerning if the bike was a bomb. But really, its my choice if I want to do this.

With a bike you hardly need to use the brakes due to the lovely engine braking. I'm not too sure where you're going with this post but I see myself as an aware, safe rider. Thing is he didnt slow down, he just jammed on his brakes. I guess its one of those things you had to be there for. It is easy for someone who has been riding for quite a number of years to be saying this I guess. :innocent:

My opinion:
I don't really care about what you did or what happened, but I've learnt from being a parent myself that everyone else is someones daughter, son, brother, sister, father, mother, etc.
If it was one of my children you did that to, I can firmly say that horn and whatever else is of usable size on your bike would need to be surgically removed from your anal cavity before you took your next shit.

I still fail to see how or why a sensible/qualified rider would fall from his bike/scooter if someone tooted their horn at them and it apears the guy deserved it(the toot that is).
Ok the guy on the scooter was/is obviously an idiot for txt'n whilst riding...does he deserve to fall? No...but he didn't have control of his bike so he did.
From what I read earlier in the thread Speeding Ant did see the guy get up and as it wasn't a high speed incident...all's well and lets hope the twit learns something.

I don't really care about what you did or what happened, but I've learnt from being a parent myself that everyone else is someones daughter, son, brother, sister, father, mother, etc.

In the old days parents would have told their kids that it serves them damn right, that they were being stupid and derserved it. This was back when we taught our kids about personal responsibility.
Texting on a scooter? Yeah, I'm not at all surprised the tard came off, his attentions were obviously not on the road. With guys like him about, no wonder there's so much hating on us nifty fifty riders. Still, the proper thing to do would have been to stop as soon as you saw him come off and make sure he was OK.
I love my scoot and no amount of KB hatred is going to change that, but at least I think I have enough sense to not ride like a complete reject. :scooter: We're not all bad, promise!

Is it a scooter thing or what - I saw someone on a metallic blue scooter doing this is Miramar today too, the most worrying thing is that it was around 3pm so there were kids everywhere and the rider really should have had all their attention on the road.

I'm in agreement with what speeding_ant said. I would have stopped, but it's understandable he didn't, because of the aforementioned infringements
Having a bike license should be made a requirement if you intend to ride any roadworthy scooter / moped / bike on a public road.

Hmm... I thought this was supposed to be a community. I hardly consider a scooter rider (who texts, doesnt use indicators and has no brake lights) a rider at all. I will call them plain stupid. Also, I am not ranting. I am simply telling a story. You can comment on the story if you so wish.
If you read my report on the situation you would have noticed that I did pass back again to see if he was OK. He was already on his scooter and it was running. So, no? I dont think he was hurt at all.
The airhorn is only there to protect me, and me only. I was being responsible with the horn and I was using it in the right situation.
Sometimes I think some people worry more about enforcing their morals onto others, instead of viewing the whole picture. I really hope people are not judging my character/riding abilities due to this post... The bike is now legal, by the way.
Big ups to the people who supported my decisions, and I shall take constructive criticism from *some* of the posts.

Horns are for fags. The day i use mine is the day i wake up, find myself in bed with a guy and find out on the same day i cant ride.
With the time you spend using your horn, I've already avoided the incident, and am back into riding.

I see myself as an aware, safe rider.
I think you are missing the key point here, did you or did you not require a swerve to avoid an object in front of you.
Rule 1 : Assume everything on the road will jump out and try and kill you. This will save you from kids, dogs, cats, cars and yes also scooters.
What if that scooter was a truck, and it suddenly slammed on its brakes? Where would go then. I'm sorry for being very blunt here - but i have the metal ware to show what happens when you don't follow this simple rule. I would not ever wish the same to any other rider.
Another fact of the matter is that scooters can only rapidly decellerate if they use the brake - as engine braking on them is not responsive enough.
While i think the particular person txting is a prat. If the scoot rider did the exact same thing without txting. Its fair game that you would be in the wrong.

Does it work in automatic mode, or do you still have to pull the brake leaver and not die. I'm just asking as a lot of people seem to think a more powerful horn will create a magical shield that defends bike and rider.
I wonder if they have an equivalent for deaf drivers, you know - like 600w headlamp high beams to piss people off who cant hear your horn?
Fact of the matter is that the horn is miss-used in NZ. Its more of a "Hey fuck you too buddy" then either a "watch out" or "hi/bye buddy".
I would be fine with the whole horn thing if people wernt such assholes with them. An example i would ask most people who love their horns is "Did you use it before or after the situation?" Most say after.
If that is the case - what is the bloody point in em.

You missed the point my genetically challenged friend, or is that just name sake?
I don't care from either side of the story, I really don't even give a shit about the scooter rider or any moral bullshit surrounding it.
I'm focusing on the fact that Speeding Ant came on here somewhat gloating about his actions - then clarifying and justifying it to some degree. He initially made out that his actions were the cause of the scooter riders fall.
That young boy who was beaten to death in the back of a prison van by another prisoner; Do you think he deserved it for stealing his parents car and giving them so much grief to the point he was in the situation he was?
The logical and sensible thing speeding ant should of done in that situation, if he was so concerned (and obviously he was concerned enough to write it up on Kiwi Biker), is to stop at the scene, make sure the rider is okay - Phone the Police and report the accident, wait for the Police to arrive and then provide them with a statement saying what the scooter riders actions were (i.e. texting, braking suddenly, motorcycle not up to WOF standards if no brake light, etc.) and offered to go to court if need be.
The rider would of received a careless use or similar or at the very minimum a sevre warning - maybe enough to make him clean up his act.
There is my point and the reason for my previous post.
He must have freaked, you dont expect a bike to let off such a big noise! Considering he was riding one handed I think he must have let go in shock. It was rather amusing, left me feeling a little guilty though.
Actually, I'm not guilty.
That's why he'd need to have the horn surgically removed from his anal cavity if it was one of my children.
EDIT: None of my children will ever be seen on a gay scarf wearing scooter thingy unless they're thrashing it in some abusive form. Just for the record...

An interesting thread indeed. So many opinions!
I'm thinking - One guy riding like a total fool, obviously frightened unexpectedly by an illegal road user. (No Reg/No Warrant).
I tend to think that if you ride around unwarranted and unregistered, you shouldn't be thinking of yourself as any better.
I feel sorry for people who have no insurance (elderly etc) and get hit in the wrong by people riding/driving illegally and don't receive any renumeration.

I never used the horn in the past because when it was used in accordance with fair warning they just wave.
I have used it when I was under threat.
I have also used it to good effect when another biker was under threat.
I have used it when I was not seen but not really under threat.
I don't feel I ride any differently but I do feel more willing to use it, as a fair warning and to tootle a cheery farewell (this takes practice).
The old horn was frankly embarassing. It is after all the same unit supplied on the GN125 up right through the range. I have even had WOF testers toot it a few times to check there really was a horn.

So my horn shouldnt have been used? In that situation I thought I used the horn to
a: Warn the scooter I was there and..
b: Let them know that they had done something wrong

Warning a scooter fair enough - but do that wouldn't you have to be behind them at the time?
Its a pretty simple logic really - a warning happens before an event.
Also on another note - how hard is it to pull up next to a scooter doing 30 and tell them they are in the wrong with hand signals or your voice?
I realize that you are fairly new to the bike game - but so are most scooter riders.
How would you feel if i belted past you, missing your bars by 1 inch, making you jump out of your boots.....just simply because you had done something wrong? Or would you prefer if i pulled up next to you - nice and safe. To point out that your indicator is still on?
Treat others how you wish to be treated.

The only places in the world where horn usage is discussed, and horns are used only infrequently with potentially dire consequences for the person using the horn are NZ, Australia, and the UK.
The rest of the world just uses their horn when they damn well please.
Riding with no Reg and WoF. BFD. I've ridden around for a couple of weeks at a time with neither, just through being too tired and busy to check the dates on those totally arbitrary fitness and taxation documents.
Riding everywhere at Mach 9 and close to your personal limits isn't just as illegal and just as threatening to those uninsured old people?
We're all perfect. Yeah Right.
My personal attitudes have changed massively since I registered on this site. I don't care what you ride, what you wear, or how you ride. Just don't involve me with your stupidity on the road and I'll try to avoid doing anything stupid to ruin your day.
For those that missed it, I think karma smacked speeding_ant in the head anyway. I don't think he deserved it though, and I don't think he was unjustified in tooting his horn.

Man do things change. I remember a year or so ago every one was slating people who text and drive, and talking of dishing out punishments ranging from spark plugs over the shoulder through to punching wing mirrors with armoured gloves.
So a relatively newbie comes on here and says he honked his horn at some one who was texting and he fell off, and the hounds are released.
Texting drivers kill. Texting riders include themselves in the equation. A horn is sound waves at a harmless frequency. If a horn makes you fall off then you shouldn’t be riding. The guy got up hopefully having learnt something and there's less risk he will plough into my friends or family. Resign from the PC brigade guys.
