War of the Worlds

A classic radio story, about martians invading Earth. When it was originally aired in England, and America it was taken seriously and many people actually thought martians had landed on Earth. Released on Record (4 sides), later a movie was made, then the americans got money hungry again and made their own remake based on the classic book by BRITISH author H.G Wells. The Americans, as with everything they envy, tried to make out that it was all their idea in the first place! *typical*

I prefer the old record.

So which do you prefer?

I vaguely recall hearing it as a radio series when I was a young'n. (clarification: that was in the late 70's)
Same station did the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy too.

Other than that I have listened to the CD several times.
Didn't think the Tom Cruise movie version was worth the $8 it cost us to hire it for the night and was quite glad I didn't shell out for a night at the movies to see it.

HHmmmm, read the story a long time ago.....kinda like the new version, some bits seem to follow the original story well, though some are well off the target....liked the pommy version too, but again, not real faithful to the original story...
Also Like the original radio broadcast version, lets ya see it in your own way......without all the tacky special effects.

Exactly! Alow the imagination to run wild... The Goon Show was precisely that.

As to WotW. Have only listened to it on LP.

I think it was 4X0, was Dunedin based and we lived in Queenstown at the time. I remember sneaking a transistor under my bed because I supposed to be sleeping.

Goon show was another classic, very very clever guys.

Have only listened to it on LP.

I have the original LP, with all the inlays with the drawings etc. My parents used to play it on the odd sunday afternoon in the study when we were in England, very fond memories! As a child I remember watching the original movie on tv and finding it very scary!

H.G Wells is a fantastic british author, and was a shame most people have only ever seen the american movie - which in my opinion took the heart out of the entire storyline.

I take it that that is the record version? Only ask that as me dear ol' ma n pa had it on tape, a while before CD's came out. Problem with making any movie from a big book, or even a double LP record set, is that you've only got so long to hold the audience. I liked Narnia The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe movie as I've never read the book and I'll go and see the next one as well. Same as Lord of the Rings, never read the books but enjoyed the movies. People I know thought a lot was missed or glossed over in the Narnia movie but I still liked it.

Totally agree here, although the digitally remastered CD is awesome on the home theatre system.
Aaaaahh Childhood memories........Deep emotional scars of being scared of the f"@%n seagulls eating my eyeballs and a three eyed 'Simon Says' hovering in my window.

Still got the original LP and also brought the CD, the LP is the best as the CD has little bits different in places which for me brought up on the LP don't make it so good. Not even interested in seeing the american movie.

What a great movie.

I have the original LP - Never Played. Still sealed.
I have the CD too, which I play on occassion.
I have the original movie on DVD - Which kind of sucks.
I have the Tom Cruise version, which was awesome. I really liked it. Hard to pack such an eventful movie into a short two hours.
What an awesome performance by Dakato Fanning...

All in all, Being a huge fan of The war of the worlds......

I'm kind of dissapointed that it was packed into one movie and not a mini series.

I was massively dissapointed in the new movie, not to see the Thunderchild getting melted to smitherines!

And not impressed that HG Well's original words weren't stuck to in the opening scenes.

The Tom Cruise version sucked like a Dyson. The plot was lamer than Christopher Reeve. Tom's acting couldn't have been more wooden if it was done by Troy Tempest. Even Sue Bradford would have slapped his daughter. I was cheering for the robots.

"you must spread rep around before..." couldnt agree more Hitcher.

Jeff Wayne's (LP/CD) version was inspired. Richard Burton as narrator, and showed that a kazoo could be a musical instrument, rather than just a kids toy.

If you have never heard it, you are missing out.

we got to listen to this great story IN school, IN classtime! we got 30min in the last period on a friday afternoon. It was on a record and came with a picture book. It was awsome. I would love to own it so I could listen to it. I didn't even bother to go see the american version at the movies cause I knew it would be crap, and it was!

Remember listening Jeff Waynes great soundtrack and Richards Burtons mesmorizing narrative on the old record version while at Intermediate. The martian cry was also so much better than the fog horn in the movie version.

Hey, great memories here. Used to have the original LP but it deteriated with time, and overplay. I managed to replace it with the CD a while back and still enjoy it occasionally.
and have often wondered how it would go as a stage show using Pink Floyds lighting engineers.

I though my mate was a gimp when he bought the LP days after it being first released. Trouble is that after enduring it for a couple of times it kind-ov snuck under my skin. Could almost qualify as a guilty pleasure. Almost.
Book and orig. film frightened the life out of me as a kid.

I prefer the book, and I have the radio recordings around on mp3 somewhere. There's no escaping it as it seems to be a compulsory part of media studies curriculum anywhere on the planet.

All of Wells' sci fi books make excellent reading, in my opinion. I just finished listening to the a reading of the Invisible Man (audiobooks keep me sane at work) and was surprised at how much of the complexity was lost on me when I read it as a kid.

The Tom Cruise movie sucked giant hairy donkey balls. We didn't even get the gratification of seeing the leading characters being brutally murdered at the end, which is the only appropriate way to end a movie where the characters are all so dreadfully annoying. Tom Cruise looked too smug. Dakota Fanning just wouldn't stfu. Glad I wasn't the one to pay for the tickets :p

I saw the Tom Cruise version at the movies and didnt think much of it. Especially his son surviving, utter rubbish.
