View Full Version : So why did you do it?

Probably been done before but anyway Why did you buy a bike? A cars much better, no plssing around taking 10 minutes to put your gear on, no checking to make sure its still got all its wheels, no having to pick it up if you forgot the sidestand, no having to strap stuff on the back wondering if it'll still be there when you get where your going (includes pillions), cold day just turn the heater on, wet day just wind the window up, turn on the wipers and demister to see out the window whereas on the bike you peer thru a half open fogged up visor at those vague shapes in front off you while wondering if you'll die from hypothermia as water dribbles down the back of your neck/trousers/gloves etc, hot days wishing you hadn't put that extra layer of clothing on just in case as you turn into a grease spot under all your gear, having to arrange to go for a ride with your mates when it would have been easier to pick them up in the car/van and go on a booze cruise/shopping trip and theres lots more reasons a car is better that you know up yourself.
So if you've got a bike you must be certifiably nuts!!!!! .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .....................I've just allways liked bikes:scooter: but I'm sane and your not!

Why did you buy a bike?
Because daddy made me get my license and my sister already owned a bike  Then, when I started earning decent money (23k a year haha) I'd been riding for four years so finally splashed out and bought my very own, brand spanking new VTR1000.

Because the Biker Gods called to me.
Humanity is divided into two subspecies. The elite, the Chosen ones, to whom the Biker Gods have revealed themselves. They are on two wheels.
And the others, the untermenschen, the lesser breeds, without the Law, the forsaken, who have not heard the call, condemned to pass their lives in a grey, dreary semi-life. They are on four wheels.

My car was costing me freaking heaps to run in gas and tyres and I liked the appeal of a ridiculously fast little bike for bugger all! I was living in town too so didn't really need a car for anything at the time. Took a tzr for a test ride and I was sold!

Thats says it all for me, when I'm riding, reading about bikes, looking at bikes, talking about bikes or thinking about bikes, I get this feeling...like nothing else matters...theres no war in the world, no child abuse, no hate, no anger...no negative-ness...just positive love, shared with every one. Life is a just a big long perfect curve in the hills...no bumps or gravel.
Ahhhh just perfect!

Probably takes me 15 mins putting my wet weather gear over my leathers, a bit of auri on the visor and I will stay as dry and warm as you will in your car and be able to see prety good to. The big idea in riding is you luv it, you breathe it, you talk it, not like been cooped up in a car with someone shouting in yer ear, slow down your going to fast or any other stupid remarks.:done:

Same here. Back in the 70's (1970s not 1870s) bikes were the cheap alternative. I had to buy my own bike, Suzuki T125, because Dad bought my brothers and I an old shitter of a Vespa 150SS to learn on. Mind you if you could ride one of those things with a bit of confidence real bikes were a breeze.
I love riding, but I like driving my car, riding my mountain bike, even just getting out for a walk. But I love riding my bike, and cleaning it, and lubing it, and .................

I wanted the freedom to explore the new area I had just moved to. I had been thinking about it for a while, had finshed uni and had a job and income so could afford one.
Now I'm into it, I keep riding for the freedom to explore, the camaraderie, the desire to improve my ability, and that satisfied feeling you get when a ride just comes together and you're in harmony with the bike and road.

Yeah, I understand that one. A lot of people say to me, 'it must be cheaper than the car.' Well no- I travel much, much more now than I ever did in my car, just to go for a ride.

because i got fed up with being stuck in a steel box in traffic and all these bikes are getting past me without a hitch plus i grew up on them and unlike cars where the most dangerous nut holds on the steering wheel, we like to find out what our limits are and face our fear with the knowledge that all other bikers are family unlike steel box drivers they break down and no one stops to help them except the police to do a qvr on them.

Initially because work was shifting to another part of town and I didn't want to pay for parking. Then the bug bit. I'm sure ppl at work get tired of me talking about riding, lane splitting and lower fuel costs. But I'm the one with a grin on my face after riding to work. Morning traffic is sooo cool.

Why DO I do it????
HHHmmm... because it's the only time I truely feel alive inside!! I can feel my bloody pulsing in my veins, I can hear my heartbeat, I can feel my muscles working in unison. I can feel the wind in my face & buffeting my body, I can smell the fresh silage, & dodge suicidal bumble bees. Coming into a corner, being well set up.. correct speed, gear & line.. manouvering round it, in perfection.. blasting out the otherside & onto the next one.. is nothing short of orgasmic! Being at one with my bike & the universe. Being in control of myself & my destiny. My bike is my soul.. to be without it, I would wither & fall like an autumn leaf.
That's why do I do it...

[QUOTE=Motig;1006527]Why did you buy a bike? QUOTE]
I dunno who said it first but I have an old video with Willie G Davidson on it saying "If you need the ask the question 'why?', you wouldn't understand the answer".
I have five vehicles in my name, all of them purposeful, three a lot of fun and of those three two are bikes. If it never rained, if I didn't have kids and wasn't renovating a house I wouldn't need anything with four doors and a towbar. ie; I'd own nothing but a bike or two. I can ride a lot further than I can drive, it's a workout that I really enjoy and never get tired of. Weird question........

Old man had one, Uncle had one, older cousins had em and when I had the money, I had one too. I was 14 then. Got my bike licence at 15, got my pilot licence at 17 and my cage licence at 19. The planes became a job, the cage just moves me and my family around towing trailers and stuff and the bikes.....well they have allways been there, can't imagine life without em.

I grew up on a farm, and learnt how to ride quads at the age of four/five. About ten years later the old man taught me how to ride a bike. Joined the navy, got my licence, got a bike. Besides, on a bike, everything is at your fingertips, and you can feel the road. In a cage, I personally find that things are placed all over the place - hence why I only have the bike...

I rode as a kid around a paddock, just for fun.
Mention getting a bike for transport when in teens, the folks went nuts.
26yrs old, and the one of our cars craps, and it went from there, cheap bike for a couple hundy.
And the riding quickly become a love.
Even more so now with my machine that both looks me in the eye with
And I look back with a hint of a smile
And on that note time for :zzzz: as I am thinnking in the next week, I am going to buy her a ring...
A special ring of rubber to go around the front rim.... she deserves it!

I got my bike licence a few years after getting my car one in the late 70s. I did it using my brothers bike (XT250) as I didn't even own a bike. Then I got a XR200 to get to work on and mainly used it as a cheap means of transport. I was not very good with trail bike riding so I got a road machine and have never looked back. Being on the open road was addictive and upgraded over the years and still riding. Not so much a lifestyle but more of thing I just enjoy doing.

My first experience I can remember was sitting on an old jawa bike I think it was...and for as long as I can recall have always had bikes.
Didnt start riding until around age 8 on the farm....back in the day...
Having a bike has been a way of life. It's not my primary transport but its a good passion of mine.

My family have always been bikers, I was told a funny story by my father about how he was a courier once and rode from surrey (england) to germany for a job and I wont bore you all with the details, but there was a missed ferry and an incident with a sandwich on the mway... my family all rode goldwings and my first taste of biking was about 6-7 - riding on the back of my dads goldwing interstate around the block!
After I bought my first bike - yamaha FZX250 Zeal, and had a nasty spill I sold it. After that all I could see around me were bikes going along the road... calling to me. Despite protesting from my mother, I bought another bike.
...cant imagine being without one now. I even sold my pride and joy Mini (one of many I have owned) and bought a larger bike to be more practical as my only form of transport.

cos im no fan of cars.
the bike is also cheaper to run, park and maintain. theres very little temptation to fall asleep, and less buttons to mess around with.
really, i dont really know why! dads brought us up on bikes, but made no real encouragement either way.
i push biked everywhere, so it seemed natural.
and also the day i saw and identified a harley for the first time, and felt like my insides were all swapping places with the vibration.
