Well, unfortunately I’ve become an Easter statistic.

I was following some friends from Auckland, to Papamoa on Friday, when coming off the motorway, about ~10km from the “Ice Cream Castle” the traffic slowed to a stop. Naturally I stopped, and was just about to glance at my mirrors, when I got hit from behind. I did a fairly sizable stoppie, but managed to stay on the bike, as the rear wheel landed, I got hit again, and did another “stoppie”. How I managed to miss my friends van in front of me mid stoppie, I have no idea! Still I kept the bike up and limped to the kerb. Couple of bikes gave me a wave, thank you.

Pulling up, and talking to the driver, he said that some vintage cars coming in the opposite direction had distracted him, and when he looked back to the road he was already on top of me. The second shunt he enlightened me, was him panicking, he stomped on the accelerator, and drove into me again.

We were in a ‘convoy’ of three cars, a van directly in front, and my friend in his new BMW behind the offending car. My friend in the BMW says the car (legacy) actually climbed up the rear wheel.

The bike as far as I can tell is a write off, it doesn’t look so bad cosmetically, but the rear sub-frame has taken a hammereing, the swing arm has alaso succumbed to the abuse. The exhaust sticks out at odd angles, and the rear lights don’t work. I managed to limp to the Ice cream Castle where I sorted things out. The bike weaved, and handled like a pig. I was told the wheel wasn't centred either. Also the gears kept popping out into neutral, it was a very long ~10km!

I left the bike at Caltex; Great guys, they’ve been nothing but accommodating, seriously good service.

Good on the Caltex staff, they are probably used to accidents on theis stretch!

Crikey mate , you could of easily be counting the holes in the ceiling of a hospital room , Glad your`e all good , shame about the bike , the driver took responsibilty I take it and his insurance will be paying for a new set of wheels for you ? Well done the Caltex guys.

I would take this opportunity to take the piss out of yet another Hyobag being destroyed as part of my eveil plan to take over the world...but it just isn't funny, you are seriously blessed to have walked away from a hit that hard. Craig told me about when I caught up with him this arvo. Glad you are ok mate.

Thats unfortunate.
Hopefully the break ended better than the way it started.

Lets also hope the driver was covered and as forthcoming with his actions in the next few weeks.

Crazy! Hitting the accelerator as a response to running into something! One of my worst nightmares on a bike. Glad you are ok it could have been so much worse.

Hope the insurance etc. goes smoothly for you and you get a replacement asap :)

Well I'm in two minds. If it is a write off, I'm keen for a nice ZXR. But my full is due in a couple of months, so I'm contemplating buying a 400+ and just let it sit in the driveway until I’m “qualified” to ride; kind of like what Craig did. We’ll see how things turn out I guess. :yes:

Yeah it could have been a lot worse. I didn't even have a scratch on me. Seems the Hyobag took one for the team!

Jeez what a dick, hitting you twice. Something has to be done about educating drivers (hint hint you coppers out there) about tailgating and the likes that cause these sort of crashes. Only last week (in my now written off cage) I got rearended by a trucky who obviously had his brain elsewhere as he pulled up to a traffic jamb (if he had a brain).
You are a lucky lad as the damage that truck did to my cage would have been barely survivable for a biker.

:lol: Yeah I was in two minds about riding, the weather really made up my mind in the end. Thing is though, same place same time, if I was in a car, or a tank for that matter I'd still have been hit. Only thing that changes with what you're driving is the injuries I guess.
