Hi,

Recently got a 1990 ZXR A and was wondering if there was anyone out there who could lend a little 'How to' with basic Bike Maintenance e.g Oiling Chain, Bleeding Brakes etc...

Im in the Wellington Region and available most nights.

I'd be very interested in this sort of thing plus it would give me another excuse to take the bike out.

I am still going to take you up on your offer Mr. Bistard. I was going to practice on Nigel's Hornet as mine is still under warranty for another 8 months, but now he's gone and sold it and got himself something else that's under warranty too! Bugger it all! But if you do run a maintenance day, I'd still like to come along and watch and learn!:sunny:

If I can help, let me know...

I have an old AMAL carb we can take to bits incase you are even confronted with a badly running BSA.....

But seriously - they are simple and easy to see the basics...

I have a garage,we can use my tools,I have my race bike there or my R6
It would be better at my place then I will know I have the tools etc
Have a think about what you would like to learn
I would suggest oil change,chain lube & adjust,how to change brake pads,bleed brakes,check wheel bearings,steering head bearings
I have sets of carbs to show how to strip & put back together,if you wanted to know something let me know
How about one night next week??

Sounds great.

If you added spark plugs, air filter and oil + oil filter, I imagine that would be all the regular basic stuff.

Would this be better during the day (weekend) as it may take a while. The participants could supply some bevvies and lunch.

I'm away this weekend but would be quite happy to help next week if you'd like me to Bistard. Been around bikes a long time and know most of the basics and don't take our bikes back to the shop even when they are under warranty.

I'll PM you my contact details.

After my effort yesterday I'm feeling petty damn cocky so I'd best attend so I can be taken down a peg or two...

If you stop learning you start getting burned.

10th April 2007, 18:29
Nah Col your the carb man now, come and tell us all about them. Is Str8's bike still going better?

Colapop
10th April 2007, 19:20
I fink so... still needs the carbs to be balanced - all I did was take them off, clean them, and put them back together. Pretty str8 forward really... :innocent:

Scooby Mike

If at a weekend then a Sunday would be best for me (not this weekend though) and if during the week a Monday or Wednesday evening would be ideal.

Sounds very interesting. Count me in. I have basic maintenance theoretical knowledge but I'm sure there are tons of stuff that I don't know and I should.

Sometime in the weekend would be great.

Carbs? What are they? I'm pretty sure my bike doesn't have them... :innocent:

I'm keen to attend. I have no aspirations to be a mechanic, but I figure I should at least know what to look for so I know when to take the bike into the shop.

I'd be keen too...

I have a whole Honda we can pull to pieces (no seriously - I do)

Hey paul, you are missing the point a little bit, what we will try & show you guys,is some basic maintenance, everyday type stuff & the correct way to do it,not pulling apart motors etc at this stage
I am more than happy to show how to do things on either my race bike, which is ZXR400,or my R6
I have a list of four people so far, they are
Mrs Kendog
Mcarle
Freakshow
Centaurus
Anybody else interested send me a PM

Trudes
11th April 2007, 15:29
Can you add Mr Kendog to that list too please Bistard. Maybe he can bring along his new bike and you can show him all the things that are likely to break on his Suzuki (damn, there's no tongue in cheek smiley!)

Hey paul, you are missing the point a little bit,

You flatter me, I think I missed the point by MILES....

Sorry - I was being a bit economical with words. Absolutely, Basic mtce at your place and I'd still be interested if I can get there because you are never too old to learn something and really I don't know much about new bikes...

BUT - later - If anyone is keen, I have a big ole Honda 450 that needs it's engine pulling apart (gently - I may use it if the crank is OK) and if someone wants to come help haul it out of the frame etc - we can make a day of it. fascinating engines.. always wanted to pull one to bits...

Apparently.... But Malcolm at EcoHonda told me if the crank is pooed - biff it out... all of it... (I'm not sure he is a fan of CB450's)

But thats for later eh?

Just wanted to say a huge thanks for the tips and advice yesterday. It's amazing how scary sounding things like adjusting the chain and removing the rear wheel become so much less frightening once you've actually watched it being done.

The only down side to last night is that it's going to cost me a fortune! On the list at the moment....

Rear (paddock?) stand
Chain lube (wax)
Engine oil
Oil filter
Brake fluid
Fog City visor strip
Decent tyre pressure gauge

And the most important of the lot.....a nice new tool box!!!! I've got most of the tools but being a typical bloke I so want a garage like yours Barry!!!!

Thanks once again
Mike

Thank you so much Mr Bistard, it was awesome of you to take time out to show us around the bike bits that drip and stuff! :niceone: Now I've just got to wait until my warranty runs out to practice!:wait:
