Hi,
I know this is a cage but can any one help. I've got a Mazda MPV Auto, which is jumping out of gear. Up until today I've never had any problems with it at all but my brother has borrowed it and tells me it is like it is in neutral all the time. Apparently made some funny noises at first and stopped working. Anyone got any ideas what could be the problem.
Also do you have to do anything special to tow Auto's? As is stuck in the middle of town :(
Thanks
David :spudwhat:

The flux capacitor?
Where's that/what does it do? Thanks

To tow an auto FWD, you should really use a tow truck. For a short distance you could tow slowly (less than 5km).
Ideally the engine should be running with the box in neutral, (this will circulate atf which lubricates the 'box) although that may not be wise if there is gearbox damage.
RWD you should remove the driveshaft before towing.

Dude....
Unless it is something simple like a busted drive shaft or centre torn out of the torque converter plate I'd say there is a high chance it's gunna cost a fair few bucks...
In the words of the Mazda Service Manager (we were on first name terms with service mangers in 3 main centres) when we owned the Mazda from Hell... "Anyone thats owned an imported automatic mazda for any length of time is going to have their arms deep in their pockets sooner or later"
Naturally. I could be talkin' utter shite (wot me?) again but the description so far is not very technical eh?
I'd suggest getting a vehicle recovery truck to pick it up and take it to an auto trans specialist.

Been there, done that, with a 1993 Laser (ie, 323). Full auto trans rebuild for something over $2,500.
Replacing fried clutches starts to seem positively pleasant, after that.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of :( Especially as all I'm trying to do is sell the stupid car. :calm:

Unfortunately your symptoms match mine.
Was there a period of noticeable drive 'slippage' prior to losing forward propulsion?

Not that I know of. As far as I'm aware it just happened today.

Hmmm. Well, at this point I'll bow out with the recommendation that you get the car on a flatbed and off to an auto trans specialist.

Is the trans fluid at the correct level? Is the oil on the dipstick a nice clear red colour with no odour or is it dark red/blackish and smells burnt? If the latter then the clutch plates and / or bands are stuffed.

The MPV is rear wheel drive, same running gear as the 929 - the trans is crap,a no drive symtom means it's the end og the road and you will need at least 2 grand to fix it.Try to find a second hand one (not easy, believe me I've tried) or just walk away.

sorry to say this dude-the very highest probability is that your primary clutch pack has gone bye byes. Provided only 2 packs have gone i can get it rebuilt for $1500 BUT I can't say with certainty that the other clutch pack wont follow suit.
Yea ive done a few of those poxy gearboxes --Dunno wots worse them -early galant or those bloody new mitzi tiptronic boxes.
There are 2 other possibilities but to be honest its an extreme long shot.
One is the gear shifter mechanism has broken . Another is that the diff bolts have sheared or the diff has gone bye byes.
Let me know if she will drive in reverse -i dont expect it but if it does ya might not have stuffed as many clutch packs.
Also about the towing--mate the damage is already done.
let me know if i can help

Do you own a zippo and some insurance?

Contact www.pickapartNZ.com
Their closest yard to you is in Tauranga but they can contact the other yards in AK and wellington. If they have one it will be cheaper than anybody else in the country.
Don't say Jack sent you,It won't help.
Good luck.

Hmm tempting :innocent:
I actually managed to drive it back to my place which fortunatelly is just down the road. So isn't totally stuffed but definitely wasn't engaging properly. So will try and sort something out.

Dave --can ya be a tadd more precise.
Do you have to wiggle the gear change lever to make it go into gear -once in it drives fine?
Or do you have to rev it up to get it to move.
or does it like EvENTUALY seem to find drive but pull away in what seems to be too high a gear?
When you put it into reverse does reverse gear work normally?
Your problem was bugging me -then I remembered having a mpv once that I couldnt get up the driveway at work--yet under way it was fine
The tourque converter had glugged up.
What you can do is
1-look under the car for a pool of red (possibly by now burnt brown) oil
itll possibly only be drips by now or hand sized,
2)check the oil level in the GEARBOX -att he same time check the color of the fluid.

Sheesh! These Jap autos cost a lot to fix! Full rebuild on my F100s C-6 was $1,100, included new splined section in t'convertor.
Heres hoping you find the mythical 'cheap-fix' - low fluid or similar.

Yeah, well thanks to the good old consumer and their bitching and moaning you won't find a reptuable repairer who will go in there and fix the one component faulty as Frosty says - it's a full rebuilt with every last thing checked and replaced with a full warranty. In the good old days when it was BW35s Trimatics and C4s we would pull them out and fart around, pull a bit of crap out of the valve body maybe(Trimatics with loose nylon dodads),do a clutch pack or band.Nowdays the consumer has so much power they can kill a good company dead over one job.Now a full overhaul is all that's offered.

Yeah, if its anything like my galant, you'll be looking at $2500-3k for a box rebuild or $5-6K for a new one. Bummer

Mate ill Pm ya a crowd thats pretty good -they do a lot of warrantee work
ya know what warrantee companies are like-only fix it if its broke.
Their work is very good. so far ive only had one hickup and to be honest they fixed a clearly faulty part and missed an intermittant fault.
turned out to be a ball of cotton waste blocking up the tourque converter.
actually its funny you should say that cos a customer just tried to hit me with a $300 repair for carb repairs-The carb shop had reco'd the carb
The car had a lil misfire which was a blocked jet -carb shop wont once in there leave any worn components alone they replace em even if not faulty
Posh Tourer :P

Thanks Frosty,I am never too happy to send people away by just saying your cars stuffed, you can't afford to fix it,now just get it out of here and go cry somewhere else.Another option is handy.I don't mind doing a rough job,but don't want comebacks for helping someone out.On that note...I've just fitted a second hand dual mass flywheel and clutch to a blue 95 Surf from NP,parts supplied by dealer - look out for an intercity transfer

I had another look tonight and checked the fluid level while the car was in neutral and the fluid level is low which sounds promising so I'll try topping that up and see if that fixes it.
Thanks for your help

Just rang the auto place where I managed to take the car in. And they said it's quite major :( Stripped stuff in the torque converter which has caused the intercooler to get stuffed as well. (Not 100% sure). Looking at 1700+ to get it fixed. :argh: :brick:
