hey guys,
might as well report that i suffered my first bin today....
Unfortunately my first bin resulted also in my mates first bin.
Situation/Explanation:
The two of us were travelling up hill behind a van (front vehicle) and a car (rear vehicle) which were slugging up the hill at 40kmh. My mate passed the car and pulled in behind the van, as i came up alongside the car and went to pull in next to my mate the van does a right hand U-turn in front of us, my mate stopped in time but my bike low sided and hit him into the van. The can driver is Asian (no racism) and cant speak much, if any english!!!! Hard to say whos fault it is, obviously he did the turn, but me and my mate were close as we were gonna pass him aswell....

Damage to my bike was minimal and has been repaired where needed, his bike (MC21 CBR250RR) needs front gaurd, top fairing and gear change replaced (looking at $300ish i think). Got a bit of road rash on my knee and hip but nothing serious - Where riding gears all the time, im glad i was. Good news is both riders are ok and will be back on the road by monday :niceone:

Farq..... bad day for it.... hope you and your bike get better.... were you passing in a 50 zone? that could suck...but still... a u-turn in front of traffic...WRONG!...grrr, see Near Death Experience

I've seen lots of nubies lately on the northern M,way I so wish they could have my hard leard and expensive knowledge. its like watching lemmings going over the edge of a sheer cliff. its so sad to see so much money going into the coffers of the government. lately the POLICE have left the northern alone but they will return when you least expect it.
Passing on the left $150 passing in the sholder $500 passing in the outer shouder (not a legal road)$600-700 passing in a bus lane $600
its a shame to see all that tax going to the POLICE
Greek Acropolic (fortified hill where security forces reside) that where police word comes from,so They say.

Glad to hear your alright. Was your mate pissed that you low sided :killingme . Ahh well live and learn, i almost did the same this in my first two weeks riding, i ended up missing CK and going down the road though  .

BTW if you are replacing/repairing fairings professionally (on the CBR) you are looking at quite a bit more than $300 so good luck

What is 'low siding' and 'high siding?' What are the differences?

aff-man
28th August 2004, 01:17
There is a form on that somewhere but low siding (or what i think i know) is when the back wheel basically goes out from under you (lets go round a corner etc) and you and the bike go sliding across the road. High siding is to do when you loose the front end and go for a flight with usually a painfull landing.

Aff-man,
Low side is when you lose all traction on ANY wheel and the bike slides away from you. High Side is when you lose back wheel traction for a second and then kicks back (regain traction) making the rider fly threw the air!

Yep,a lowside is a nice gentle experience where the bike simply lies down depositing you gently on the road, then slides with you into the nearest hard/prickly/expensive object......
A highside is a bit rougher, the bike starts to lowside, then changes it's mind and grips, going back upright and on over, launching you like a catapault into the nearest hard/prickly/expensive object, then it usually follows you in,rolling/somersaulting/flying so as to do max damage to you/it/expensive object.....

You are in a corner, leaned over. You have a low side and a high side. Its all about which one hits. If you crash on a straight, refer to andy1's description. Lowsiding is much gentler, you normally only slide, and you follow the bike along the road. High siding you get thrown off the bike, and you lead the bike along the road :buggerd:

What is 'low siding' and 'high siding?' What are the differences?

Low side = fairing damage, bust lever, minimal yet inconvenient shit.

Highside = Bike written off or very badly damaged, but a highside is much more impressive.

Dang! glad to hear you and your mate came out ok.

I presume you've got a MC22? MC21 is the NSR. For the top fairing you're look at about $1050 for a new one. You can get fiberglass ones for a lot less though. If you kept all the plastic bits for the bike, you can get it plastic welded (~$70) and repainted ($200+).

Good to hear you are not another statistic on the police notice board. Stay safe, and remeber, never trust any cage driver to behave !! :blah:

Ouch dude. Glad to hear u are ok. I think the van driver can be had for U-turning onto oncoming traffic, careless driving. might be pushing it, but give it a go.

As you were following too close - you will most likely get a ticket along the lines of following too close without sufficient room to stop. If he indicated (which you didn't mention) - he isn't in the wrong at all.

Question - what was the speed limit - as in a 50kph area - I don't see why you bothered passing? And if you did - why didn't you pass bother vehicles?

I had a slow U turn incident once, it was a fibreglass robin reliant car that did it. it was a robin reliant, a three wheel car, this was 1981 england, anyway the disc of my Triumph bonnie went up the car like a band saw.
narrrrrrrrr, and I wrote the car off. I got a bent gear change lever (rhs) I crashed to the right
it was a good day.
He got fined for careless driving.
Sounds like you were in the right so don't get all PC about asian drivers it was a prat driver.
