Wowowow, I just test rode a 600cc bike. Astounding torque, incredible acceleration, frikkin amazing!
I almost wheelied it by mistake by giving it too much power in 1st gear. (Or rather, I almost crashed it by mistake!)
And it was a rusty 17-year-old XT600u as well, no cutting-edge powerful engine there! Only $3000 at Motomart in Lower Hutt.
Upgrading to or test riding a bigger bike is a mad thrill. It's hard to believe how much power they can get into a bit of metal. When you have gotten used to pinning the throttle on a 250cc, a bigger bike is like a wild animal, a bull with massive reserves of power in wait.
Too much power for me at this stage in my biking career so I think I'll pass, but boy what a rush. Uh, and I already have three!

Go out and test-ride a big bike you newbies! It's amazing!

Wait till you try a 1200cc Fuel injected Buell @ 110HP, you'll need an extra pair of man skins for that one.. lol.

I did ride a 900cc bike, and a CBR250... and it has RUINED everything for me.

Before those fateful days I was quite happy on my little black GN tootling along, not knowing any different, going full throttle (a wowing 130-140kms per hour, with speed wobbles!! weeeeeeee)... but its all changed now, Im not so content on my little bike, I pulse with jealously when I see others on their faster bikes!! You bastards!! Grrrrrrrr!!!!

The day I crashed my little 150, I rode the ZXR 750 about 20min if that before hand, so I know the feeling of waaaay more power. Part of the reason I threw mine so carelessly through the corners I think. Though I still can't wait to upgrade myself.

Yes it is, but a worked one. 110HP can be obtained from any 1200 Sportster motor by parting with a few $$. The 2002 Buell Lightning came out at 101HP stock.

Yeah know the feeling, I've tried a couple of bikes recently and a 'blade just blew me away  , the ER6 felt so slow for a week afterwards....oh well must keep saving up!

Yep you really learn about the importance of good throttle control once the horses are released especially when overtaking a line of traffic.

Do dealers ask to see your license when test riding bigger than 250cc bikes?

Ive only got my learners for a bike so might be a bit embarrassing if they catch me out. Im keen as mustard to try a 600cc for half an hour :innocent:

I feel your pain

Since getting my full, I've test ridden (in order):
Hyosung GT650R (with cycleworks muffler)
04 ZX6R
WR450
GSXR600K5
Ducati M900

And I'd like to test out a Buell 1200 Firebolt and a ZX10R, though I don't want to prey too much on the kindness of these dealers letting a minor ride such awesome bikes. Then again I could just keep doing it untill they so 'no, buy something ffs'

Edit: Surprisingly enough, I thought the RG was better than the Monster. And getting back on the RG after the these bikes didn't disappoint me, tipping side to side is just so quick that it's still a fun bike. Still want a 600 but I'll hopefully hang onto the RG

Yes. They take your details and put it on an insurance form so they're all covered.

Getting one's full and testing new and bigger bikes is an expensive hobby.

I passed my test in October last year after riding my little XR250 around for a couple of years. Four days after the test, I got the shiny green licence in the post, and the following day I took out an Aprilia RSV-R Factory. I still remember the rush the first time I opened the throttle. Hard to describe, but it was something like: :shit: Holy mother of goddddddd!.

I took a few more out in the following weeks, and bought myself a virtually new Honda Firestorm VTR1000 at the end of October. For the first four weeks, I rode around with my face permanently grinning.

And then I went on a track day... by the end of the first day, I had already grounded out the pegs. By the end of the second track day (after spending a reasonable wodge of cash getting the front shocks revalved and resprung), I was almost, but not quite, keeping up with some of the faster boys mainly getting beaten on handling and power. The pegs were now well and truly grounded - I'd taken about 8mm of metal off one of them.

So, after selling my principles down the river to get it past the financial controller, I bought the Blade in March. I grin like a crazed monkey every time I nail it. I've done two track days at Pukekohe and am looking forward to the 20/04/07 when I get to play at Taupo (http://www.motott.co.nz) again. My rear tyre, only 2300kms old, is shot to pieces on one side, but should last me next week...

The thrill of upgrading CCs is addictive - just choose your bike carefully and take it easy for a few hundred kms until you get a feel for the bike. Going from 20 to 30 hp to over a hundred in one hit can be rather intimidating. You realise how quickly corners come at you...

i know it too. i was used to riding a 200cc dirtbike and then i rode my brothers friends rmz250 and thought that was crazy, but then my brother just got a crf450x and that thing is unbelieveable.

Cor blimey, I wish my single had 18:1. I wish R6s did as well :innocent:

12.8:1 is normal R6 compression ratio. Still nothing to be sneezed at :)

Nope a stock standard 07 R6 has 139 bhp at the rear wheel. 4-5 less with the non cold air intake versions. I know mine does dont no abt urs?

take an rsvr/litre high perf twin (ducci/prillia.. modded tlr dunno what low end is like on them?) out that'll **** ya pants big time, then a 10r cus it's a top end monster and you'll crap yaself doing 200+ in the time it'd take a 250 to hit 90-100.. lol. you'll find them pretty smooth though as long as reasonably stock. alot of people riding the 10r(or any other modern il4 litre) as a first big bike for first few decent rides change at about 5k (just before the 2ndary throttles open up and real fun starts) while ****ting themselves... lmao! always cracks me up...

:killingme Yeah. Course it is, dude. As you're so knowledgeable, perhaps you'd like to inform me how the UK's superbike magazine measured the '07 R6 on a dyno and got 104.01rwhp @ 14,381 rpm. If you're very lucky, with ram-air operating, you might just hit 139bhp at the crank but there's no bloody way on earth you're getting 139bhp at the rear wheel from an R6 unless you're a) running nitrous, b) running a turbo, or c) on crack.

Cr1MiNaL
6th June 2007, 00:34
Yes I know was a bit of a typo sayin the rear wheel and u shuda known that since ur sooo smart. everyone knows that an R6 has 140 at the crank. mate I can appretiate ur help and friendly advice but if u think that because u have a few more miles under ur tires than I do so u can just disrespect people u have another thing comming buddy. lets be a little sensible and end this here. Thanks.

also ill take option c.

That's a bit harsh, mate, 90% of the time the manufacturer's specs and what is quoted is what you get at the crank. I always quote my little CB as 26HP, but it's not making anywhere near that at the wheel. That horsepower figure is just what the manufacturer quotes.

Well, considering Yamaha actually claim 127hp at the crank (http://www.motorbikes.be/en/compare/5835/6112/), the claim of 139hp is a little optimistic. Ram-air makes a difference, but I very much doubt it's 10%. Especially when you consider Yamaha are probably taking that into account when they quote their figure. Honda, for example, claim 117hp for the CBR600RR, but real-world rear wheel dyno figures show the Honda as the most powerful of all the Jap 600s.
