Has anyone here ever had their ride repainted? I'm looking at purchasing a 1990 ZXR250 but it has a horrible green white blue Kawasaki paint job. I was thinking of a nice coat of black :). Any idea on prices?

Can prolly get it done fairly cheap for you,one of my mates is a carpainter, another a signwriter(stickers...) or if you're keen to do the work,it'll prolly only cost you materials and a few beers.....

Sorry to hijack this thread a bit from you Magua, but am wanting to do the same thing to my bike.
Hey Death, quotes I've been getting from Taupo are around $500- at least. And that's with doing the sanding / prep stuff myself. The worst bit of the side fairings are underneath where the ole stone chip thing has been happening but I've sanded then down to either the yellow base or right back where it needs the spot prime. Am I getting diddled?

At $35 to $45 an hour for full rates I'll let you decide. (try working that out for a full respray on a '62 Fairlane and you'll know what "expensive" is!!) :blah:

Well i sprayed my first bike myself (with the help of a mate) It looked real good and all it cost is the materials (about $220). I got all the equipment now so if you willing to spend a weekend (maybe a bit longer) doing all the sanding etc and dealing with difficulties that arrise then on a zxr you probably looking at a $300 materials cost (or $320ish with beer)

I know there is a lot more to painting a sports bike but I had to show off a little about Pete's painting efforts so far, he's doing an awesome job of painting his bike, considering he's just using paint spray cans, hopefully you can see in this picture that he's blended the red and blue mettalic paints and put in some black panels and done gold pinstriping, it suits the kind of bike it is, the cans of paint are about 12 bucks each, plus bog, sand paper, primer, and so far a few extra cans of clears, got to do the side panels etc yet, total paint cost to date about $80

Na,like scumdog said by the time you add up the hours(your own prep is never good enough for the guy doing the painting,no matter how good you are....) and materials $500 is quite reasonable.
After you prep it it's gotta be primed, rubbed back, sometimes primed and rubbed again, puttyed and sanded, then colour sprayed on(2-3 coats depending on colour/coverage),then rubbed back yet again, then clearcoated(usually 2-3 coats),rubbed again then cut and polished. If you're doing more than one colour you can add one lot of colour coating/masking/rubbing for each colour......
There's a good weekend's work painting a bike.......

man with spray cans!! that is talent. But it is a bit different on a large surface area like a zxr side fairing. i had considered it but the chances of uneven coating was just to great. So i sucked it in bought a $130 compressor with all the bits, spent $70 on pint and materials and walla resprayed fairing.

Yeah, we have a compressor, but the paint worked out way cheaper buying it in cans believe it or not, it was $33 plus gst for 250mls per colour if we got it mixed, so went with the touch up cans available, you are right about the size of the fairing and the amount of control needed to do a good job, Pete has repainted most of the vehicles we have owned over the years and also has painted a lot of the vehicles at his work too, so he has had some experience too. Mettalic paints are a bit more tricky to work with he reckons and he prefers working with plain colours. Good for you repainting your fairing yourself, the most important bit is all the preparation Pete reckons, it has to be perfect otherwise the paint just looks like shit

Our spraypainters base their rate on $45/hour and use good materials and because they both have bikes make sure they do a faultless job. We are little more expensive than some shops but good jobs aren't cheap and cheap jobs aren't good.
Scumdog hows the Fairlane coming along, only eight weeks to go isn't it.

yeah, affman and black has to be the most tricky colour for showing up any little mark too, but I personally think black is the most beasty colour for a bike, any bike even scooters!! :niceone:

Not good C., Fairlanes STILL at the paint shop, just about done BUT I've still got to get it to the upholsterers to get the hood-lining put in, then the glass place to get front'n'back screens put in, then I have to put in engine/gearbox etc etc and then I can get it certified :buggerd: so we have long faces and coming to realise we might have to pull the plug on our Rotovegas trip. :bye:

Mate
Painting is 95% preperation and 5% application , its not hard to do but takes lots of time . I have done cars but only classics , and its expensive and time consuming to do a great paint job .
