We went up this Road from the Featherston end a while back. We stopped at the concrete blocks just before the creek. This was a through road once according to a 1990 map we have. Looks like the bridge has been washed out at some time. The road turns to gravel just out of Featherston.
Today when we went to Greytown we were followed by a couple of BMW's coming off the foot of the hill. Did a loop round via the Martinborough turnoff and went up to Greytown. We stopped at the cafe on the right at Greytown and the BMW's came out of the side road there.
Question: Did they go through Underhill Road?
We went down there to have a look and stopped at Woodside Station where the road turns to gravel. Does Underhill Road link up with the dirt section beyond Woodside Station?:scooter: :scooter:

I always thought Underhill Road was a dead-end. It turns to the left at the end of the looong straight, uphill then leads to a forest park entrance at the end. It's a nice spot at the river for a picnic/swim/whatever.

There was never a bridge there. It was a ford "way back when" but it is not possible to get a bike up the northern bank without a lot of work. It may have paper road status, but I have given up trying to get an answer out of the local council.
I have seen it marked as a road and bridge on a couple of Wairarapa maps, but they also showed other roads that have never existed. One even showed a nice gravel road from Kaitoke to Tutuwai Hut in the Tauherenikau valley. Good luck to anyone who tried that trip.

I used to ride over the river many years back when my old bike had no rego or wof, and I used to ride between Greytown and Featherston to avoid the main road
So in an easy answer - Yes it can be done, but I am not sure what it is like at the present, but it was easy :)
Underhill road is on both sides of the river

Thanks for your replies.
We had a look from the Featherston end a while back and it didn't look too bad beyond the concrete blocks, but we were on road bikes.
We are looking to buy a big traillie next and will check it out then.

Yip Underhill road looks like a mission to get across to the other side we push biked out there once when we were stupid and had no licences as a police man lives down there so it not a wise idea to blast down there on trail bikes like Z50 and my brothers old XR100 motard
I dont go down to that part of the river now tho the train tracks run by it.
I just go down the road until it turnsto gravel and turn left go up the hill and up to the walk way talk about deep water up there.
Also mean cliffs to jump from haha
And is a nice drift circuit when you are bored
