Gutting, it just goes to show how important keeping your server and serverside executable content up to date is. Any old idiot can pretty easily google the techniques required to hack out of date forum and webserver software ;[.

Nice rant, care to elaborate?

One of the problems with making techy stuff easy enough for noobs to use is well, noobs start using it. Hackers generally only come in through the door you leave open. Stop your bitching and restore from your backups.

Aww fuck. Tossers. It's happened to a couple of my sites. Regular backups are the only defence. Who the hell has time to apply all the patches.

Jesus, some of you guys are harsh. Not everyone's a bloody sysadmin or have the skills to find the security holes in whatever forum implementation or web-server software they're using.

Comments like "stop bitching and restore from backup" are really helpful.

I had backed up and reset the site up from the backups 3 times in one day then came back from a rally and the site was hacked again. I apologize for any for inconvenience to those that were starting to use the forums, gallery, blogs, classifieds and was about to launch a auction site targeted at motorcyclists. I had more planned… oh well

The server is in the states so I can’t do much about the server but is running the latest versions of everything the actual software the site was using was the latest versions of every thing and patched regularly.

On a side note, logs showed the IP address of the actual cracker is a NZ IP address.

Thanks to those of you that have shown support.

Okay,

On a serious note, that sucks someone was picking on you. Did you consider contacting the ISP from which the connections were coming from? Un authorized access to a computer system and all that being a crime and such like.

I never used your site, but it is terrible that such a thing goes down the tubes because of some arse hole.

As you can see from the annoyed users, people obviously valued what you were doing.

We have had fun here for last few days.
All i can say is "Fuck you too Microsoft"
First we had problems with SQL databases getting mixed up (which is easier than it looks), then the fricken update of "MCRT" died, tried to send information out illegally - adaware picked it up stopped it.......then somehow in the mess the config folder got fucked. I ended up ripping out that drive and putting a new one in the mates laptop with a fresh version of windows and put his drive in a usb caddy.
MCRT can suck my.........

Buggar that some arsewipe had to ruin it for the rest of it.
But thanks D for the work you had put into the site, it was coming along well. Pity that it is gone, but totally understand.

You are fighting a lost cause. I too, for many years tried to educate people with the difference between hackers and crackers.

Just, don't bother.

Who cares?

Someone else's misfortune should not be an excuse for the triumphant trumpeting of petty technicalities.

Sometimes empathy should over-ride pedantry.
