Ok people, I've never bothered giving you guys and gals my views on bikes in the past, as being a salesman it can easily be passed off as simply 'selling them'.
But this is different. THIS bike is different.
Let me start out by saying there is NO WAY anyone needs one of these 'things' as a street bike. But that's not really the point. The point is....if you're anything like me, the sheer thrill of trying to master one of these things is worth the price of admission alone. I was laughing in my helmet the whole time I was riding it....just looking for someone to look at me the wrong way.
To sit on it feels 'right'. It's roomy but small, and not at all too agressive, even for an old git like myself.
The last time I had something this slim yet angry between my legs, it was my wee Asian flatmate.
When you push the go button...it emits a much deeper growl than its older brothers while feeling just as keen to build revs.
On the road, the huge midrange hit has been tamed down, and at first I wasn't so sure I was happy with that. But after a few runs up Alexandra Rd Mt Vic, I was sold on the idea. You can get up it far harder far sooner with this puppy, without the fear of having it unhook the rear tyre and chew your nuts off. I was amazed how much quicker I could ride it so much easier than a K5/6. I could concentrate on the next corner without worrying if I was actually gonna make it there. But........given enough room to rev it....and holy shit!! Whoever said they don't wheelstand that easily must be a limp wristed knobend. I mashed my nuts on the back of the tank when at the top end of second exiting a corner still cranked over,I had a wheelie wanna take me somewhere I didn't want to go (the other side of the road), and like a true pussy shut the throttle waaaay quickly and paid the price.
The brakes don't need any sort of comment other than fantastic.
The handling is much much smoother and far more sophisticated feeling than the 5/6, and it changes direction better than a 675 Daytona.
So........do you need one? No. Would I like one? F*ck yes. Am I mature enough to own one? No. Are you? If so....do it. Don't let anyone try and tell you they're not cool or good to own. Because to me at least...that's not what it's all about. If you like the thrill and challenge of owning something like this....need and practicality don't come into it.
Yes you'd go faster A to B on something else. But who really cares? That's not what these bikes or the people that own them are all about.
Yeehaa!!

Nope....I'm saying that if you like showing homos and Honda riders just how gay they really are....this bike will help you do it. I've ridden a lot of big bikes in my time...and I can honestly say that this was so far removed from anything I've ever ridden on the street it's not funny. Well it is actually. I'm still grinning (and shaking).

Doubt very much I'm the right man for that job mate!
Tell him though that I had a beer the other day with the 'person' he knows that told him I never back off in an argument, even if I'm wrong.

That depends entirely on the individuals skill levels.
For some...a 250. Others a 600...and some a 750. But if you're good enough to ride a litre bike as it should be ridden...then no other litre bike I've ridden comes close.

I have a loner sitting in the garage right now!
Very nice to ride, Power delivery was very smooth and the brakes are fantastic!
Handling was awesome and so easy to ride fast, doesn't feel as fast as my K4
but I know it's down to being so smooth.
I'm hooked on those slipper clutches!
My only dislikes are that I think it's butt ugly and sounds terrible.

Alexandra Rd on Mt Vic at 3.30pm is totally empty 'bar' the odd school girl.
Pity it wasn't hot and sunny.
They held a timed sprint race there years ago, and it's a grouse wee piece of road away from all traffic. Bumpy, cambered with a nice mix of corners.
Try it....from the Newtown side to the top and get back to me.

I had one for years that we eventually got sorted with water and methanol injection at 1075cc running 20 lbs of boost.
35mm forks...cable operated brakes and no frame bracing.
And I've still got all of my own limbs.:scooter:

Firstly, your "missus" has her own bike and hardly needs a grab rail. Secondly, you'll get where you're going THAT much faster on this, your hands wont get cold. And thirdly, carrying luggage is pointless when New Zealand has the best courier system in the world that will deliver your kit anywhere you like overnight.

Weeeeeel.....
I rode it at lunchtime.
You know, its kind of funny. I was expecting it to be a bit of an animal. You know, 185HP, 170kgs. It sounds mean on paper.
But its not. I mean, its fast and all that. You can take that as a given. You get to 8000 rpm and it comes on the cam and just goes silly. I weigh 100kgs, I was sitting at the front of the tank leaning right forward and I couldn't keep the front down under full throttle in the first three gears. It takes a mental realignment to handle the speed at which this thing hauls in the horizon...
But its smooth. And linear. And it just goes about its business in such a self-assured, unflustered way that your confidence on the thing after an hour is huge.
I didn't want to give it back.
I don't know about that mode thing. C was a bit gutless (well, actually it felt just like my RF900 to be honest), and B was about the same until about 8 or 9000 rpm, then I couldn't tell any difference between it and A so I guess it moderates the mapping in the lower and middle ranges.
So I pretty much left it in A. And then banged the mode thing when my hands moved going over a bump under throttle. And the bloody indicator on the instrument panel disappeared. And I spent ages trying to get it to come back again. So I decided to find a straight road, give it full throttle in 2nd and push the mode button until it felt like it was accelerating the quickest - and that would be A mode. Trouble is - straights don't last long...
I found out later that if you hold the mode button on for 2 seconds the instrument thingie pops up again.
Anyway, back to the bike. Does it handle? Yes, yes, yes.... its like a Daytona 675, just with heeeeeaaaps more grunt. Stupidly more grunt. Did I mention it wheelies well off the throttle? tee hee... You know, I spent the first ten minutes on this thing laughing my head off at the performance. I haven't had so much fun since I rode an RSV-R...
I found at first that it seemed like it was a slow steerer, but the solution was to give it more gas - weird that. Those exhaust pipes, while offending some with their looks, don't upset me - but then again - I ride an RF900 - stylistic subtleties are lost on me. And they sounds pretty good. Induction noise is cool - much better in mode A - in mode B and C it sort of sounds like its choking a bit.
The screen is AMAZING. I couldn't believe how you felt no wind at get off and walk speeds and only minimal buffetting at get off and I'm going to smack you in the head with my stick before I bundle you in the back of the car you dangerous bastard speeds.
It feels very skinny - especially around the feet - I felt like they were touching each other. Brakes are insanely good - and that slipper clutch just works - the fact that I don't have much to say about it says a bunch.
Could I use it as an everyday bike? You bet.
I think Suzuki has created something very special here. A bike I could live with for everyday riding. The way they've tweaked the motor gives it huge flexibility. And I could commute on this. And tour (although the seat hurts your but a bit after a while). And I'd definitely take it over the Rimutakas.
Thanks as always to Pete and WMCC for letting me leech yet another ride on one of their great bikes. I will buy one off you one of the days - I promise.
Guys - you owe it to yourselves to try this bike out. It's a ripper.

Crasherfromwayback
17th April 2007, 21:15
maybe so , but the k7 woulda halved in value before you got the ownership papers in the mailbox, and then 6 months later your neighbours on both sides woulda bought them with a 33% discount during suzukis summerinfestation sale
lol....you ever tried to sell an 'exclusive' European bike second hand mate?
Suzuki don't include their 'Flagship' models in 'Summerfeast' any more for starters.
Secondly....if you start with 21K (the GSXR) and loose half it's value (which you won't)...you've lost 10500.00. If you start out spending $42k....and loose half (and you will).....do the numbers.

I rode the thing this arvo.
I'd write a big speil, but I fear all the shit that could be said about it has been in a million tests, reveiws, con's, and bullshit.
Want a bike to go fuck off fast??
Want a bike to do wheelies in top?? Pick it up in forth and ride thru?
Want a bike that will do 167km/h in first?
Want a bike that is as happy sideways as it is on one wheel as it is at full throttle?
Anyone in the area, go check out the new Blackies on Pikok hill. Thats how much I liked this bike.
If you think you can handle it, or would WANT to handle it, go get one.
It checks ALL the boxes. Nuff said.

sure , thats what the guy at my local stealership says every year just before the gsxr1000s have $4000 knocked off the price , or are you trying to say the gsxr1000 is not a top tier bike?
I'm not trying to say anything of the sort.
I AM saying that Suzuki have never discounted the GSXR1000 (new) by $4000.00.
And if you're that way 'inclined'.......by an inferior bike for piece of mind by all means mate.

I personally hope this bike is better than you say and Suzuki sell truckloads of them here in NZ. That way the price of the K4 and K5 models will drop with people wanting to trade up to this far superior model. Something tells me this isn't going to happen as I think I can remember how the K5 was a massive leap forward.
The K7 600 is a different story. Can you write a test report on that bike for us please Pete. Suzuki have done alot of work developing that bike but maybe the new model a better roadbike now than a racebike.
BTW What made you get up at 3am to do the last post?

Yeah, I was watching...
I also rode the bike yesterday (thanks Pete! And thanks for the 675 as well). Don't think I'd buy the K7 for a commuter though...
I tagged along behind the wild man from the Wairarapa who was out hooning on his 07 Gix today and the good news is it's calmed his wobbly wheelies. In fact he was pulling fantastic long wheelies on it.
The twin pipes look fine from behind too. This Guy has come off the hottest 05 Gixer (powerwise) around, so if he likes the 07 that says a lot.

100% WITHOUT DOUBT.

Not at all mate. That's why I think they're such a huge improvement.
In the past....they've been such nasty (in the best possible way of course) beasts that they'll catch the unwary out in a flash. And while that was part of the attraction for myself and I'm sure a lot of others, it was a deterent to quite a few as well. Some felt more at ease on a CBR1000 for example.
So now....you can have your CBR1000....and a grundy ripping GSXR1000 at the same time. For starters.......the three way power mapping switch is no gimmic, it works. Next....it's so plush compared to the 3/4/5 & 6's it's not funny. Next...it's much roomier, and the fairing, although it looks smaller, works far better.
So......ride it round in 'B' mode....it'll be quick as, yet controllable. When it's pising down, use 'C' mode. THEN....when you're on a road you know....and you wanna feel like you've been blasted out of the end of a huge Howitzer, simply select 'A' and rev that puppy.
Then you'll know you're alive.
Come in and see me for a ride mate.....I promise you you'll not be dissappointed.

But young Jay had a play on mine last weekend, and said that even with the rooted rear shock, it's real easy to ride fast.

Bollocks.
The k7 is fucking rapid. Shit. It's also pretty fucking clinical. Arse.
I'm just going out to put a few more k's on it, I think I'm going to have fun. Lots of fun.
It's nowhere near as vicious as my k6, probably a little bit poofy like a honda. But it's fucking quick. It's stupid quick.
Even in my hands.
Nothing 'poofy' about it Bruva! I bet you now realize you can get from A to B far quicker on that beast than you could've on your K6! And it's definately more powerful than a K6. That's the best bit!

fuck are you a bike salesman or something ? last right up i read said the k7 was marginally better , if i got 2 k6 1000s one with 30,000km on the clock and ratty tyres on the other with 5000km and a new set of matching tyres they would be worlds apart as well , only way to really test the differences is to get a new k6 and k7 and put them side by side in a series of tests
I'm pretty sure, I read him saying, it's so much easier to ride...and, I'm also sure, he's ridden many a new K6 as well.

i had a quick play and from my perspective its pretty tame until you get to 9,000rpm's then the real fun begins. not at all aggressive like the k5/k6 low down and hence where people say it can be ridden quicker.
i remember a write up in one of the pommie mags about the new cbr1000rr after the journo realised that him thinking it was gay was a mistake, just because it wsn't a hooligan didn't mean it wasn't fast. Quite the opposite, smooth and usable power is actually better.. and i think this is Suzukis thinking when they created this engine.
initially i thought it was gayer than my cbr600rr until i realised Dover had put it in c mode...
i could see myself riding this thousand and being capable, Not like on a k5/6.

I guess I should write a full review.
Ok, first things first, it's fucking ugly.
It looks like Suzuki gave Stevie Wonder some paper mache and asked him to drop acid and design a superbike for them. Fairings all over the place like some sort of picasso bike and the nastiest blue and white colour scheme I've seen on a GSXR. It's a fucking pig and the twin cans not only look like an afterthought but it appears they came out of the Hyosung or Zhong Shen parts bin. Hideous.
Sit on it and things start to improve, the seat is comfy and it feels a lot like the 750k6 but not as slim. The instruments are clear and tell you all you need to know, it took me a minute to figure out how to work out the "ghey" buttons. You have to hold one of them for a couple of seconds for the display to show what mode you are in. I stuck it in A and left it for the most part.
Fire it up and it sounds a bit shit, those cans have the same aural properties as they do visual and need to be junked. Quick.
It's got the standard Suzuki "slick as a pimp" gearbox but as I got moving I thought something was wrong. Isn't A the Suzuki setting? It's a fucking pussycat, too easy to ride. From idle through to about 9 grand I felt I may as well be on boomer's nuclear sewing machine. The ride was firm but plush and noticed how little it squatted or dived under gas or brakes, very stable.
I tootled out of town and once I was through Whitford on the long way home I opened it up a bit, it's deceptively quick. It's easy to ride quick. It whir's away between your legs like a gas turbine and it handles with precision. It's almost boring.
The brakes are the same as the K5/6 in feel and the way they stop you, pretty good, but having ridden the 750k6 I still feel those are the brakes which set the benchmark, particularly in the GSXR range.
That's about it isn't it?

Want a bike to do wheelies in top?? Pick it up in forth and ride thru?
Want a bike that will do 167km/h in first?
Want a bike that is as happy sideways as it is on one wheel as it is at full throttle?
Anyone in the area, go check out the new Blackies on Pikok hill. Thats how much I liked this bike.

I have to agree. I'm not a Suzuki hater by a long shot. But why they have to keep going with that Hybusa type melting, drooping, falling on the front wheel, headlight ugly thing is a mystery. And the other bikes with the pipes tucked up under the tail looks so much better.

Let's see, shall we.
MotoGP: Six championships for Suzuki since 1949. Fourteen for Honda.
WSB: One championship for Suzuki since 1988. Five for Honda.
Supersport: Two for Suzuki. Four for Honda.
Yep. Suzuki got owned, alright. No doubt from reading the reviews and seeing what people have said on here that the K7 Thou is one stonker of a bike (and I bought the 'Blade :crybaby:) but quoting a company's mission statement is hardly testament to their ability. In fact, the flasher the mission statement, the less able the company is to achieve it.
And yeah ... the K7 is fugly. Suzuki may indeed go for function over styling, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the styling's gotta be given to the spotty retarded boy in coke-bottle specs who sweeps the penvil shavings off the design room floor. Look at the 1098: it's hardly a bad performer and it doesn't look too shabby either.

Can't stand the looks, I'm not a fan of my K5 looks either but the K7 looks even poo-ier.
The twin pipes looks like extra weight but whoever buys a litre bike and leaves the stockers on is a poofta anyways :)
I'll stick with my K5 and loud pipe for now, the fairings don't look like they've been melted by a giant kid with a magnifying glass thinking its an ant and the pipe doesn't look ghey.
The old ZX10R was a cunt to ride fast, but that didn't stop them being sold.......some people prefer to get a wild ride over a fast stable one!

Those are World Championship figures, the Suzies do much better in the domestic championships of the world due to the fact they are closer to a racer out of the crate. FACT.
Honda puts more than three to four times the money of the other manufacturers into winning races, the world champs is where they will always concentrate their biggest efforts and where they can change the bikes a lot to suit the rules.

suzuki made its first motorcycle in 1954 and its first serious motorcycle in 1967 so thats hardly a fair statement , must of come off a honda site.
Actually, Suzuki first won MotoGP in 1976 with Barry Sheene on an RG500. Honda didn't get their first win until 1983 through Freddie Spencer on an NS500. And no - it came of a list of results since 1949. If you're interested, MV Agusta top the list with 18 championships - but the last of those was in 1974.
secondly pull a stock blade and stock gix outa the crate and the honda will be handed its arse on a plate , the new cbr1000 is not quite the equal of the gsxr 750 let alone have a chance against the 1000, i stand by my own the race track statment cause look at the race results when its not the biggest cheque book that wins
Most teams do not publish financial results. So how do you know how much factory support they get, or how much Honda ploughs into racing? I just picked the three biggest motorcycle racing series on the planet. I imagine if you pick and choose your race series, you could get results 'proving' Suzuki was better.
And when it comes down it real world performance, it depends entirely on the rider. Yes, the K7 Gixxer's ahead of the '07 Blade by all accounts. However, according to most of the reviews I've read, the '06 Blade was ahead of the K6 Gixxer. Next year will be a different story. Honda will bring out their new model (as will Yamaha and Kawasaki), whilst Suzuki will - based on their standard two year release schedule - simply give the K7 a new paint job and a few cosmetic enhancements.

From industry insiders, read any decent motogp scribes comments and you'll note that Honda is and has always been the biggest spender.
Kawasaki for instance has a tiny Motogp effort compared to all the others.
No the factories don't publish what they spend but insiders such as Mat Oxley and the aussie gp writer Michael Scott know what they are talking about having been involved in GP for years and in constant contact with all the teams.
Honda was always going to be a big winner in past years with basically a full grid of Honda's!!!! with a few suzuki's and yamahas and the odd lone Kwaka.
Not taking anything away from them, don't take it personally.

Funny, cause most of the reviews I've read (and I read a heap of them) tend to lean towards the Gixxer or the R1......they said the 06 Blade was better than the 05 Blade but still not a match for the Suzi or Yam.

My point was, or rather is, that the minimal difference between the bikes is just that; negligible. however the way the bikes perform and the way the power is delivered means that Honda usually end up on teh podiums.. where as gixxers DON'T! cos they crash...

And Honda have more money to spend on the best up and coming talent, along with many millions of hours of experience and previous data to draw on from heaps of current riders and machines. Correct me if Im wrong but Suzuki only have two bikes that are doing really well at the moment, trouble is when they get baulked by a million hondas at the start.

Maybe I'm just a pussy, but I really didn't like the idea of that kind of power in heavy traffic or when commuting. That wasn't the sole reason I went for the Blade, but it was a big factor.

Yeah it's a thou - the current model. Although it's down on power compared to the '06 Gixxer, it's only a few ponies at the rear wheel. It was more the way the Gixxer delivered the power that convinced me the Blade was a better prospect for me. I know I can't ride either of them to a fraction of their capabilities, but I didn't want to feel intimidated every time I wheeled the thing out the garage. What's interesting is reading how people are saying the K7 Gixxer's much more linear in its power delivery. The phrase 'Fireblade-like' has ben rolled out a few times, even.

Having ridden both the K7 and the CBR1000 (thanks Sanx) I'd have to agree that the CBR1000 power delivery is less intimidating than the K7. The CBR just feels less aggressive. Very similar in many other respects though.
And, yes, I'd agree that either will throw you off if not treated with enough respect....indeed, the CBR came a lot closer to throwing me off than the K7 - different circumstances of course...:innocent:
