How long, stopping ONLY for gas....

Well that all depends on the cc size bike one is riding.

Riff Raff did it in 9 hours on her Honda Rebel (cruiser) a while back when she was taking it down there to sell.

But on a big sport bike with a quick rider....... I am sure that there times would be very quick indeed.... not sure, if they would post their times up thou....

Are you also talking about doing it all on SH1 as well..... or doing it the scenic route?

Matt Bleck

Wises reckons 7hrs 38 mins 662.196 km, but you could knock off 2 hrs easy i reckon....

Again it depends on what bike it is done on.... and how quick the rider is.

I don't care if it's legal or not Mr Poo's... but no Teleporters thanks Dan, where's the fun in that!

10 hours when I went Wgtn-Masterton-Alfredton-Vinegar Hill-Ohakune-Nat Park-Mangakino-Waipapa Dam-Raglan-22-Western Springs.

Im sure a SH1 route would be much quicker.

Matt Bleck

You'd lose then....

True, but then if I had to ride all the way on SH1 I wouldn't feel much like a winner.

Well, it depends on from where in city to city, night or day, and wether peak traffic times as you arrive or leave, but, last run (with 4 fuel stops on a cruiser) was 7hrs 15min Johnsonville to Glenfield, but that was travelling a wee might over the signage  Usually it takes us around 8:15min if we take it easy with food and rest stops.

Does it involve a midnight departure and a radar detector? Haven't tried, but might be keen to find out.

State highway one - Wainuiomata to Glenfield.
GsxR1100.
7 hrs 20 mins - with coffee break in Taupo.
But was done at night leaving Wellington at 2000hrs.
Could be done a heap quicker now with balls and some of the quicker bikes now - would be interested to see what it would /could be done in now.

Matt Bleck

yip i reckon it could be alot quicker... you'd want a scanner along with the radar detector tho.

i recon i could do it in under 5 hours, easy

edit:
make that 4 hours

680km / 3.5 hours = 195 average + 20 min fuel stops

4 hours should be plenty

Someone lend me a bike, scanner and a detector...i'll give it a shot for ya's!! Or, conversly, i could strap a 20L of oil to the WarPig...i'd have to stop for oil top ups more than gas......
I'm with KiwiFruit, 4 hours should do it if ya got a bit commited

Fastest personal time, Mt Wellington to Stokes valley, 1300 Mk1 Escort (Sport model!) 6h 25m. Stopped for fuel & roadside piss stop.

Never done it faster on 2 wheels, damn ciggie stops stuff it all up!

I usually take SH1 to Turangi, up the Western side of the Lake to Tokoroa, then take the Matamata Rd from Tirau?, fucken boring bit of road that last bit but I hate Hamilton so it's worth it.

Time of travel and size of gonads would make more difference IMHO than CC rating etc.

in a car I have done palmy to auckland in jsut under 5 hours. Legal speeds 6 -7 1/2 hours depending on traffic. Auckland to welly at legal speeds 8-9hrs. Ghost rider could do it in under 3 hours i reckon :Punk:

Ok i seem to be a slow rider but i did it on a CBX 750 F2 in 6.5 hours at night (i had 120/90 twin headlights) in the late 80s when the road was a lot twistier (Earthquake gully at Taupo etc ).
Saving grace was a 23 litre tank as the 24 hr gas stops were few and far between.
Early 80s on a worked CB400/4 always at night Wgtn - Hamilton was 7 hours with a tungsten bulb and bad eyesight because of it.
But beat this , Night time run Petone to Martinborough through the old Furgusen Drive hut road in 29 mins and only 2 cops tried to pull me over from the side of the road, I honestly didnt see emm till too late so carried on lol.

I just been up and down 4.5 times lately. Could easily do it more or less legal in 7 hours in the legnum without a stop, Wainui to Te Atatu South, turning off #1 at Ngarawahia-National Park-Waiouru-Wellington. On a bike getting keen you'd have to take a couple of hours off that even with stops. In a previous life I have found it reasonably difficult to maintain 160kph average over any distance, like Ak to Rotorua. I did manage Hamilton Nth to Whenuapai in 55 minutes, once.

Seems to take 10hrs in the van with stop for some food & gas travelling at -but not really below the legal.

Some years back & not in this country someone I knew:innocent: did it 6 & 1/2 via Back way from Turangi & 6 & 1/4 on SH1. That was back when the speed limit was 'not under 140 & try not to go over 180'. Gas stops are the killer. No babies were eaten during the production of this fictitious event. These days are well gone.
Northwestern to hutt.

Measuring from the Bombay hills is cheating.

Best time, in a Honda Civic, 5hr 57mins from Porirua interchange to turning off motorway at East Tamaki.

That wasn't being particularly mental at all but was at night and maintaining a constant 140-160ish. The key is not having to slow down for traffic or towns which keeps your average high (well maybe a little mental to get around slow traffic). So we used to use Taupo western lakes road, SH27 and anything else that kept us away fro 70 & 50kmh areas.

Used to regularly leave mum's (Bucklands Beach) at 6pm on a Sunday and be in bed by 1am. There's no way that's possible now without getting caught. There's either a fixed camera or an HP that's going to get ya.

Well I'm not admitting to it on a public forum, next thing some clown would be doing a calculation to see if Blumley (or whatever that chap's name was) could make it back from Auckland instead of Palmerston North in time to negate his alibi.

Actually I'm still not making any sense.

You cant really get away with this sort of thing anymore. there will always be a camera or cop on the way. here is a question, with the speed cameras, how do they know who to send the ticket to. no number plate on the front.
