A teenager who caused a crash in a stolen Mercedes which killed two people was today given the harshest sentence a Youth Court can impose.
The youth was fleeing police when the stolen car he was driving on State Highway 1 at Dome Valley, north of Auckland, crashed head-on into a Toyota Rav on October 3 last year.
Two passengers, including a hitchhiker, were killed. Two others were seriously injured.
Appearing in the North Shore Youth Court, the 16-year-old boy was sentenced to three months supervision in a residential premises.
He was also given six months supervision following that, with a "tracker" - someone he was told would "keep an eye on you".
"There's nothing more severe in the Youth Court," Judge Laurence Ryan said.
The boy was sentenced for four charges of theft, two counts of burglary, three counts of unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle and three of stealing motor vehicles.
There were a further two counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing injury. He also faced a charge of being an unlicensed driver.
Fucking awesome. I now know I can go out, steal vehicles and kill people and only get 3 months!
NZ's law system sucks. Whats the bet this little fucker will be back out causing shit and hurting more people... what a waste of oxygen. :spanking:  :argh: :angry2: :bash: :weird:

He should be sent to live with Sue Bradford for those three months. A reality check for both parties, dont you think ??

It seems very light - and then you see the guy who was driving drunk and fell asleep filling up his car with gas - and he got three years! But of course he had a small child in the car with him - so that's virtually a hanging offence, of course.
Stuff must have made a stuff-up - I was just looking at the site again and found the guy has actually been given 18 months, not three years. That sounds a bit more reasonable.

Obviously the youth court needs to grow some balls!
What a crock.......

Folks, systemically this country is seriously fucked. I love the people and the country itself, but the way things are run here is just a joke, and a bad one at that.
Soon as I finish my degree I'm moving back to what has been voted in 2007 the best country in the world: France. :bye:

18 mths equals 6 months with auomatic parole for non violent offenders. He may even qualify to do it via home detention.
Its no hanging offense doing this with kids aboard either - they just gave servo station Dad a bollocking because it was so publicised his lunacy.
The guy who killed my mum drug driving on about his 8th such offense is getting out on the 25th after serving a FULL year I heard today.
That was quite an achievement to have served that long really, given that he applied for parole after 9 mths into his 2 year 7 mth sentence and we helped it get declined.
Whats interesting tho is that he put his 2 toddlers thru the fatal crash too (saved by kiddy car seats only) and the cops dropped the charges of drugged driving causing them injury BECAUSE THE INJURIES WERE ONLY TRANSITORY.
To qualify as an injury in NZ law it must cause appreciable discomfort for longer than 2 weeks.
Well from what I understand the kids are nervous wrecks so I'd doubt that.
The reason these semtences are light (regardless of age) is that the Judge in NZ is not allowed to give any weighting to the fact someone was hurt or killed. What is looked at is the standard of driving.
So in effect - careless drink driving causing death can earn a lighter sentence - 3 mths is possible, than dangerous driving or say speeding causing injury!
If a car is the weapon it is not classed as a violent offense (only in NZ and UK), equals Parole after a third f what is a pitiful sentence anyway.
Our max for DUI causing death is 5 years (minus 2/3rds) versus 10 - 20 years in various Aus States versus the same in Europe plus finesthat mean for sale sign on house versus up to 80 years odd in US prisons.
Seems to me that our laws are token only and that there is no disincentive to kill on the road if you want to do it at all.

I agree, however, in America they have the death sentence and that has not stopped all the tragic things that happen there.
Trubs is that people who commit a crime probably not even thinking about being caught and what sentence they get, be it 5 months or 5 years because they think they will get away with it.
And to be honest...........and to be fair I have not had Candor's tragic experience....to me the sentence would be irrelevant if I had lost one but that is just my personal view and I can understand others not feeling the same way.

You're a sucker for punishment. Why leave one try hard socialist country for the mother of all socialism? Fine if you want a simple life working for the government living in a shoe box, but if you want to achieve anything remotely great for yourself and you family you'd have more of a chance here on fantasy island.
France sucks. Lazy arse bunch of freaks.

Grahameeboy. I think you would find the sentence is not irrelevant the moment you heard the killer continues to drive round drunk or drugged. I think you would be telling the parole board to keep him inside out of recognition that your action could save society from peril at least for a limited time. If you have a say on when its open season on kids and grans (like my mum) don't see you taking that responsibility lightly and swinging the jail gate open while you offer the guy a beer and best wishes.
The longer they are kept behind bars the better for all roadusers including your little girl. Those strong sentences elsewhere are shown to reduce impaired driving violence. If for no other reason than that they keep what are usually remorseless recidivists off the street. In that time lives are being saved.
The good thing about the States with their long sentences for car killers is that they do not have 7x drink drive killers like we do. Cos its hard to drive impaired in jail.
The Mercedes idea I stand accused of having as a serious allegation has been made against me. Lawyers letter landing on fantasising cops desk soon to tell him to stop the defamation. I would not go that far but I sincerely hope that if there is a next time that only one particular victim will suffer.
I firmly believe in Karma as I've seen a few a**holes go down all in good time. I once waited 20 years to see karma hot the worst and it hit good.

I kinda meant relevancy to the fact that it does not change my personal grief whether the sentence is 5 months or 5 years............it would not be something that I would bang myself up about but you are right that one has to consider other potential victims.
I would not have a beer but would not bear malice towards the offender. What's done is done and it's more important for me to deal with things and move on with life as I would not want the offender to affect how I view life which sadly some people do trying and spending years to get what they feel is justice.
But at same time I undertstand where you are coming from.

In the Herald today it says that this guy's Family had been under the care of Social Services since he was 2 which links up nicely with the Baby / Mother thread which became a battle with opinions divided.
