Full HT licence (class 2). Has anyone sat it resonantly?

Im siting my full HT next week, and wondering what it will involve.. no one seems to be able to tell me.. i guess i would like to know this kind of stuff.

a) does it involve any written / spoken qn's if so what type of stuff do they ask?

b) what kind of driving maneuvers do they get you to do?? 3 point turns? backing around corners? that kind of stuff.

So if anyone has sat it under the current testing system could you let me know, what it was like.

I sat mine through a private provider, rather than through the LTSA, but I guess you'd still have to do all the same stuff.

I had an hour long driving test, we drove around a variety of roads, through the city, open roads, twisty little country roads etc. The only manoeuvre I remember doing was the backing. The backing test is around 30m (I think, or was it longer?) and included a 90° turn. We did that next to one of the labs at work, so it wasn't out in traffic or anything. It was only the second time I'd driven a truck, and it wasn't too bad. You just have to remember to take corners a little wider than you do in my little wee car.

During all of this you are also being observed for general road rules - indicating when leaving roundabouts etc etc.

There was also a theory test which I had to do orally while I was doing the driving test (I think this is normally a written test, but the guy I did it with liked to be different). There were a variety of questions, mainly about general road rules, hazard identification while driving, and, most importantly, rules for logbooks. Endless questions on logbooks. You should know all the ins and outs of logbooks by heart.

Yeah, the fire service are exempt from logbooks. I think the driving/on-duty hours still apply though.

Thanks Rosie, i take it that this was one of the courses that you can sit your full strate after siting your learners a? so i could well be a bit difrent... Ive tryed to get the LTSA to tell me i have given them a buzz on the 0800 number a few time got difrent people but no one can tell me. :shutup:

I have my HT as well.

But I sat mine just before they changed the law.

So that you 'now' have restrictions on what size truck you can legally drive.
(Learners, restricted and full license's)


But I do remember I had to drive the truck around the streets, up the motorway and back to the license testing place and then reverse the truck in a straight line a few hundred yards but ONLY using your side mirrors.


I used a small truck and we got it weighed to comply with the law that I was actually driving a vehicle over the said weight to make it a heavy truck.
Loaded it up with drums filled with water to get the correct weight...... lol.


Good luck in passing next week.
Be polite to the tester, and take a few deep breathes in and out before you start. Never assume which way you will go (roads and turns etc) wait til he actually tells you.

OK, I'll bite. How ... in this nana age of excessive anality and risk-aversion did you get to sit an HT when you've only driven a heavy vehicle twice?

Class 2 means I'm only allowed to drive a 15 tonne rigid truck. :whocares:

I do see your point though, heavy vehicle licensing does seem fairly relaxed when compared to classes 1 and 6, I guess because they are dealing with adults who can already drive a car, rather than assuming everyone is 15 and has never been near a road before.

might pay to get a medical done.when i sat my test for class 2about 6yrs ago,after having learners for about 10yrs(firm sold old bedford just after i got learners)and doing drive which was around town,3 point turn took about 30 mins,went back to aa centre and was told i'd need to get medical cert from doc prior to getting licence.

Got mine about '84 in a J2 Bedford and it translated into classes 2 and 4 under the later regs. Just wish I'd got my trailer licence then too.
