I'm starting a thread here, hoping it to be read as a serious question. If the mods give it a chance before throwing it in PD that is.
I want to know, what the figures are, on those who think this site is over moderated, to accomodate the people who take offence, verses those who feel the mods are doin a great job. This will be done with a poll.
I'm doing this because, of late, it seems to me, that anything slightly outspoken, finds its way to PD real quick, and that to me is wrong. Those that take offence to such things, can just not read those threads, or if something really gets to them, report it. I realise that some things said in here are out of line, but that's what happens in large comunities.
Should it not be, that something should only be chucked out, if it is DIRECTLY offensive, and done on purpose toward another person?
For example, my thread about a 24 hour, two up endurance race, was serious, I wanna do it, but because a couple of us were giving each other a bit of shit, it got chucked to PD. You may argue, that the shit talk warrants the binning, but why, had anyone posted a serious question, or comment, we would have responded in a likewise manner.
Would it not make more sense to just bin the shit talk? Promote the chat room a bit more, and people would probably do it there instead.
The three options will be...
1. The mods are moving too many threads to PD.
2. The mods are doin a fine job.
3. I dont care.

Okay, i have just become a mod on KB, i am also a mod/admin on two other sites.
And as a whole i believe this site is very loose in modator status. I personally think it should get bit more strick(Rant & Rave not to much, but the motorcycle related sections yes).
Sites i belong to posts with swear words, whole thread is locked/deleted, uncalled for insults, get warnings 3rd time is ban for forum for 1 week minium,
Personally i never really read Rant & Rave to much(am now since i mod this section), since i come on this forum for motorbike related stuff, not misc other stuff.
The biggest bug bear i have with mod status is a whole, is alot of the double standards that was happening, more vocial members, being able to get away with alot more, and then whining when they ever get pulled up, when the more quiet ones, getting jumped on for small stuff.
Take it as you will, but you guys get away with a hell lot on this forum (One forum i am a mod, i am often called 'Nazi Mod', since its visited by people under age 16, so no swearing etc etc is allowed on the site, i am harsh, but i am also harsh against everyone)

Fair enough, but there is no consistancy here, the Flame thread entitled, "Come back Dover", is a good example, it was in rant and rave, was a piss take, and it got put in PD. Why? Yet, for the last two days, Cowpoos and I, have been giving eachother shit, in a SPB thread, practically no one else is posting in it, and it's been left where it is. What is the criteria for a thread or post getting the arse?

A lot of my functionality has been removed so I can't vote. Ironically, an infraction for posting in the incorrect forum pushed my points over the edge. It was just Joni having some fun so no harm done.
So you can add 1 vote from me - "Mods are moving too many threads to PD" but I will also say that they are very inconsistent.

I think the mods do a good job overall - consider there are over a million posts on this site - and they pour it at an astounding rate. To weight the merits of individual posts, put them in perspective etc would be mission impossible.
Throwing whole threads into PD seems (to me) the only way to make this thing manageable.
The only solution I can find to this is to make threads moderated (optionally) by the author. This would spread the load, enable the problem you described to be somewhat resolved (and it's a very real problem I grant you).

Yes it was a childish remark for the sake of amusement only, but it was somewhat in context of the theme of the thread. Fair enough in the topic-specific forums, but if surely we can at least have fun in Rant and Rave.....?

Inconsitency is bound to happen. No formal quaflilications are required in order to become a mod, nor is it compulsary for us to attend to some kinda seminar on how to be a mod. So what you're witnessing is individual mod's personalities shining through, and their own interpretation of the very loose rules we have around here.
Some people (and mods are people) simply have a more conservative outlook on life here on KB.
If we want real democracy here - how about we vote for new mods every 6 months. I'll vet them all first of course. And yes....I accept bribes of cash and gifts (note I didn't say 'or').

Like thinking about where to put a post, that informs members about bikes on TV (Paeroa street racing), then deciding to put it in GBR so that many members might see it. I was bad, because it should have been hidden away in the racing section where a lot more people would see it (tui anyone?)... Infringements... big deal.
I read somewhere that a "guide for mod's" was being put together. Consistency appears to be a concern of some members and this might alleviate possible concerns.

Some things often hard to put in areas, where one person things it belongs is total different to another one, but that often comes down to general mod.

So why get infringed for a concious decision on where to put it? As you say, we all have differing opinions. Do we then have to think "mod-X will want it in GBR, but mod-Y would want this in news"? If so, we might as well ALL start off our posts in PD and save the faffing around.

I do care, I'm all about the larfs on here, and there are many, but they are mostly in a slightly innapropriate place. But that's how conversation always is, it lightens the mood, it doesn't take anything away from the topic, instead it makes us stop and giggle, then debate again with less agression.

One thing I'd like to point out, The Mods do work hard and long at this. But never confuse long hours with good work.
The number of threads that are not pointless, that end up in PD really takes away from the site. Maybe one or to of the mods could start deleting posts that are off topic, rather than PD the whole thread. Maybe it would start a trend.
And Spankme, when a threads been PD'd, your posts in that thread disappear from your posting list. Makes it harder for me to figure where I was up to when I've been away WORKING for the day.

I think that there is a big difference between good-natured banter, pointless posting and personal attacks.
I don't hesitate to deal with the latter two categories by moving such "contributions" appropriately. Don't forget there is a whole category of cry-baby diddums moaners on here whose world falls to pieces when somebody red reps them. A lot of red repping is directly proportional to personal attacks and related disagreements in the forums. Worst of all are the distraught PMs mods get pleading for the restoration of order, crucifixion of the offenders, and for their mummies.
Sometimes good-natured banter degenerates to either or both of the latter two categories. This process can happen immediately or it can take weeks. Sometimes when it's gone "too far" requires a subjective judgement call.
There's just no pleasing some people, many of whom should know better.

I don't get the need for moderators to be involved so much at all except in dealing with personal attack stuff and then to me it would only be a problem when its PM'd. On site on the threads able to be viewed by all shows what wankers the people that say stuff like that are. If people say stuff on threads I think are dopey or whatever I just don't bother answering.
If I'm in a pub/cafe or whatever talking with people and they get off my topic I don't say go sit in another seat. Conversation just flows from one thing to another and as long as its good natured who minds that. Why are we so precious and pedantic just because its on line typed stuff. If I start a thread and people fill it with all sorts of comment I don't mind, at least they responded.

My easy rule (applied to my work as well) is don't climb into the gutter with pricks arguing with you, stay on top and look down on them in their predicament. Why stoop to their level, stay at your own level and remain polite and your conscience is clear.

Both are a breeding ground for monumental corruption, I choose some other form of governmental rule. Kind of like choosing Linux over Windows, but not because I am an MS hater, if that makes sense.

John, this is a Mod we're talking about. What happened to your "Lets get em" attitude?
Just look at this thread now, just chucked into PD. Might be PD for mods, but I think most mods in general are just full of PD. Therefore I don't give a rats arse, besides I'd rather wind another member, like you, you short balding bastard...:whocares:

A forum like this is basically a community, part of our wider society.
Communities need rules. You may not always agree with the rules, but they are there for the benefit of the community as a whole.
Bleating about communism and censorship, and demanding a forum with no rules, cuts no ice with me. A forum where people can threaten, abuse, and intimidate others, is not one I'd like to be a part of. Nor do I want to sift through screeds of boring repetitive nonsense to find something readable.
The mods are fellow bikers, who volunteer their time to keep the site content within reasonable boundaries. I reckon they do a terrific job.
More importantly, this is a privately owned site, and we are guests here. Democracy doesn't come into it. Either accept the site as it is, or piss off and set up your own. But I'd be surprised if you can do it better than KB - the longevity and popularity of the site speaks for itself.

I now have in my posession an electric standing frame, which is it was stands me up. Now I know your an old farker and as slow as Troy Corser on a new R1 in moto gp, :devil2: so since I can also move myself around in the standing frame, I can probably out do you standing with your zimmer frame, or that gay repsol blade (if you still have it...). However I'm still awaiting ACC to come to the party and buy me a car and put hand controls on it for me. That and from what I've heard about some of your cars (you lucky evil bastard!), I'm farked. Never mind, I'm sure I could waste you on WRC on the PSP. Somehow that makes me feel a little better. Maybe I should change my name to inlinefucked? :done:

Ray Columbus sung "she's a mod".
Ray. Thet woz da name of da ferret that had da nest in Oggy Knob's hair (or Brass Knobs, whatever it woz). Didn know it could sing thou. Could squel like a mad fing when it woz mad (which woz mosta da time). An itdz liddle eyes would go all red. Just like Oggys (or Brasses) acktlly.
Ol Oggy (or Brass whatever one it woz) nevr wore no helmut n when e got the Triumph up t' speed da ferret would hang on to 'is ' ead like death with its claws , n its tail staright out behind in da slipstream. Dats da way most people saw Oggy (Brass , whichever) , cos e didn't like being behind noone. 'N it's eye would be glaring red like tail lamps, 'cept they woz facin forward like, so y'didn't see 'em. Unless Oggy woz behind ya, n y' saw dem in y mirrors like. But that wosnt for long, cos Oggy'd run you orf da road if you woz in front of him (so would Brass) so most people didn't
All'ays no when Oggy/Brass 'ad 'ad a good run, cos the blood would be streeming dawn is face from where da ferret ad bin anging orn, n da ferret would be dancing in is air, screaming like a mad fing (which 'e was - da ferret I mean, not Oggy. Arctchlly, 'e woz mad too , so was Brass. But it weren't wise to say that. Not where they could ear , enyway.)
'is muvva called im Ogden, but nobody else ever did . Or not twice , anyway. Was alays funny to see is muvva call im in for dinner, "Come inside Oden , dear", n Oggy wood scrape the cops intestines offen im (da one wot tried to give im a speedin ticket , like) and scarpe a bit of da grease offen is ands, n go inside , all meek loike. Just best not to ave Oggy know y saw that, eh.
'e woz a good bloke ol Oggy Knobs. Brass Knobs woz a good un too. Wonder where dey are now , eh.

I'd rather be a 'Rocker' myself. Dunno why, maybe it's the studded leather thing. From what can be gathered in the movie 'Quadrophenia' the Mods had the better drugs by far, while the Rockers poured their cash into their bikes. It's a tough choice when you're young, not so as you age and the old bod cries 'enough' on a Sunday morning.
However, as for moderating this site and getting back to the original question(s) I'd have to say that as a relative newbie to KB I find it interesting, fascinating and refreshing that this site not only exists, it is well patronized and allows all manner of input, be it positive or negative. You can take the piss, make all sorts of outlandish statements/comments/accusastions and run and hide in cyberspace. Participants can engage in a bit of banter, serious conversation or return the piss-takes. I think it's brilliant, a new bastion of free speech if you like, a mine of useful (and useless) information and there appears to be a certain kinship bleeding through the motherboards that, until now, I've only found on two wheels in the real world. Let it run, it'll sort itself out, if it hasn't already, and if viewers don't like it.... they can always FUCK OFF!
