View Full Version : Are you aggressive or competitive?

I've often wondered why I feel the urge to go quickly when I'm riding. Funnily enough it's usually only a 'problem' when there's another vehicle on the road.

When I'm riding on my own I'm quite content to bimble along, minding my own business. But put another bike, car, snail, whatever in the equation and it all changes.

I haved castigated myself for my aggressive behaviour, but looking back I realise that in fact it's because I'm competitive. I know it's splitting hairs, but I like to feel that I am doing 'better' than the other people on the road, and I really don't have any feelings (good or bad) towards other drivers/riders.

In fact knowing why I get twitchy at times is very useful. The strange thing is that I still enjoy that competitive feeling.

Whoops; far too much introspection for an aging chap with no fixed hairstyle. Have a nice day (unless I see you in front of me).

I'm competitive and incompetent. A terrible mix.

Yeah I'm fine by myself but also get the urge to pass everything in front of me for some reason.
Sometimes I'll see a vehicle, a dot on the horizon, and have to catch it and pass it!!!
But nearly all of my riding is rural and a lot of time I try and get past things before known windies or spots where I'll be stuck behind them for a while.

I can get quite impatient, and agressive if I dont like the way people are riding/driving around me.

Competitive... not usually.

Bit of both. Cut me off and I overtake (aggressive riding) and riding with RG100!! (competitive/keeping up)

On the whole I'm well tempered

I'm just slow and nana-ish.

I did however notice that riding a bike, generally speaking, makes me incredibly docile when using 4 wheels.

Used to be like that myself, I use a cage for work all the time and cover some large distances at times, it took me a long time to come to the realisation that the few mintutes I saved wasn't worth it.

I started noting cars that would pass me about an hour from destination, about 50% of the time I catch them just as I am arriving at the destination, over the years I have learnt that unless you are going really fast, the most you are going to save is a few minutes.

Once you realise that it is not a race then you can enjoy the ride:scooter:

I generaly consider myself uncompetitive - I never play sport, and rarely get into anything cometitive.A lot of this is my dislike of crowds,I've always been a loner and don't join groups.....I'm not a team player. As far as riding goes,I don't ''play'' either,if someone wants to mix it up I'll pull over and let them go.

On the other side of this I am a ''pace'' rider,I like to maintain pace at all costs...if I see a vehicle ahead it becomes a pace vehicle,if possible I hunt it down....if it has the same speed or is faster I use it as a reference.I am a menace on group rides as ''my pace'' is more important than others pace.No problem if riders are faster than me,but I get annoyed at a slower group and will push through. This pisses me off as they must see me as competitive, but I am only competing with myself....always my baseline.

I can relate 100% with the "competitive thing",as has been mentioned,I feel compelled to catch/overtake any vehicle in front me especially a bike
I dont think its a bad thing,it will depend on how you overtake the vehicle once you have caught up!! & if you can stay in front!!

I ride a Honda, so the only thing I pass is wind... Oh, and gixxers which have crashed by the side of the road.

I'm just starting out on my biking "career' so don't really know what sort of rider I'll turn out to be but I have a good idea.

When I got married my best man summed it up quite nicely. He said something along the lines of

"you get different types of people. Some people are happy just to take part, some people like to win, some people want to win and there are a few that fundamentally need to win"

He then gave a few examples which included a few hockey/tennis stories that I'd forgotten all about!!!!!

I'd like to think that I won't be like that on a bike but we'll see....

No your'e not.

I am competitive with myself where I want to be respected as a rider by my peers...thats all.

I have no-one in particular I want to 'beat' except the ones who harp on about being fast and I'll be getting to the top at the same time they do...ha!

Ok....Im a little competitive then

Nope. Never have been.
Completely self sufficent - only worry about me.
If you are slowin me down I'll overtake - vice versa and I'll move over.

I find I am quite happy cruising at my own pace ( within the speed limits ) if the road ahead is clear.
Once there is traffic I feel the need to work my way through, until I am at the front and can see the clear and empty road ahead of me. Much easier to see obstacles and possible danger when you don't have to look around/over and through other vehicles.
Only on the bike though. In my cage I don't give a toss because if it isn't the middle of the night then you are generally stuck in traffic, in which case, turn on the stereo and dawdle with everyone else.

on the open roads/ straights im fine.
but put me in a nice set of twisties and i get really competitive, car bike or whatever. not against anyone, just against myself.
But thats what makes me grin on the bike

Actualy you'd be surprised how many people over rate their ability to drive, at lest 80% of drivers think they are way above the average in ability.

I'm happier following faster riders. You can build a lot of confidence when you ride with better riders, problems happen when you get over confident.

Other motorists are simply that, just others using the road, they are not in competition with anyone, just folks going somewhere.

I try to stay away from them, stay back or get up front and keep a gap between them and me, well out on the highway I mean.

I feel sorry for you people that have to ride in the heavy City traffic every day, it would drive me nuts.

On the motorways it's like riding in a big mince meat machine I reckon! :shit:

I regard all other traffic as people trying to kill me and stay as far away from them as I can because I bruise so easily. John.

I have a philosophy of co-operation. Never could see the point of getting somewhere first. Hell I'm so co-operative I'll even help you get there first.. Hey Old Rider we agree. That's a 'first.' Had to happen sometime on KB. Stay safe OR. Just got abck from some long rides. A couple of 800+'s etc

It roughly depends on what mood I'm in at the time and which bike I was riding.:done:

Well I'm both,
I will ride fairly fast when by myself, but then I see another bike and the race is on (competitive).
Then they want to dice with me and the red mist comes down (aggressive).

I cant help myself,I have to go faster. I dont mean any harm to the other rider ,I just need to be faster.
A complete meanace, but all done within the bounds of safety and the law of coarse.

I like to get to the front so that I can ride at my own pace on my own bit of road.....it isn't a competitive thing although it might look that way I suppose.

Ixion
20th April 2007, 16:11
Like Mr Motu. I ride my own ride. If you are slower than me by an annoying margin I'll overtake . Usually it's not that I want to ride faster, but I tend to find a speed that corresponds to an engine "sweet spot" and stay there. If I have to slow down I fall out of the sweet spot.

If you're going faster I'll move over and let you past. Then depending on how fast you are going, how I rate your ability/common sense, and what mood I'm in , I may tuck in behind and use you a s a pace vehicle/pilot fish . Keeping just far enough back that if you are stopped by the plod I have time to slow down.

I don't compete. Competition is inefficient and wasteful . Cooperation is much better.

Ya know, I'm the opposite. I find security in the fact that there are mates around to pull my dumb arse out of the ditch and call an ambulance if it all goes tits up.

Plus, most of my mates have my respect and I know that if they tell me to pull my head in then they would have good reason for it.... aye Saul ;)

Im aggressive in my own little world, which may be mild in someone elses. Im competitive with myself and others, but Im not good enough to compete. At least, I havent found others just like me. Doesnt it come down to measure and match in both areas? Or is this a sense of how you feel? Put it this way, I love it when I get to truly compete, and I love feeling aggressive, especially on a bike like mine (oh, and the other rides I have the good fortune to use at times). That, to me, means I get to experience both feelings, suits me:Punk:

I know where you're coming from!
I ride like a complete nanna all the time, but am really slow when I'm on my own and tend to pick the pace up a little more with others who ride better than me, and can become a little aggressive when there are cars in front, or right up my date for that matter!
I do my best riding when it's just me and my hubby as I know he's there either right behind me or a bit in front, and I think this a safety thing of "If I stuff up, I know he's there to help me out". In these instances I tend to push myself a little harder, but also know when to back off, and I tend to back off and watch my riding even more when there are others around so that they don't either follow my crappy riding or think "good god, look at those shocking lines and abrasive braking'!!

Mrs Kendog Ive finally learned, with the people I ride with regularly... they are way better than me, choose to be ahead or behind, and if behind, will choose to blow me off efficiently, safely, and with style anytime any place, so Ive now learned not to look in my mirrors and worry about what they think, take the opportunity to get some good feedback about what they see in your riding, so you can work on enjoying it even more.
I like it when the good riders hang around for a while and make it a competition for me, its fun and I learn lots

Yes, the gixxer is a very mellow and relaxed bike:yes: A little like a salt water crocodile at times.

I have the good fortune of riding with a very competent bunch, and it's great that the aggressive and competitive behaviour never surfaces.

However, twice lately, when I've been on my own, I've been taken on by boy racers, and it's been bloody good fun playing them at their own game:yes:

Both times though, it's all been in good fun and at the end of it it's been thumbs up all round.

Passive agressive by nature, I think. Maybe a be schitzo as well. (Remember that old disney carton were once goofy got into his car and it was all on?) But I'll have to consult my invisable freind to comfirm that.

Generally prefer riding in my own wee world. Don't mind group rides though. Some great local riders. It's nice meeting new folk, even though I generally forget their names.
