Wake-up call

Was going for a cruise this afternoon out west. Had turned onto red hills road and was crusing along waiting to see the awsome sign with the black line accros it (LSZ). There it is, start to accelerate... thats a funny looking white line... I get a bit closer and realise its a black and white dog (foxy or jack russel) standing in the middle of the road. slow down a bit and move to the left just before I reach the dog a car comes round the corner, going the other way, and the dog runs straight infront of the bike. SHIT. Hit breaks hard, swerve, lock rear, avoid the dog with the front of the bike but feel its head connect with my boot. Pulled over to the side of the road to see the unmoving dog lying in the middle of the road, felling devestated, i ran back to the dog and pick it up. It's not dead. I can see its skull, the skin just above its eyes in the middle of its forehead has been removed. I can only assume that it got caught on the foot peg. I run to a nearby house and luckily someone is home and I get them to call a vet. They drive me and the dog to the after hours vet clinic on rosebank road. By the time we get there the dog is looking much better. Its still bleeding everywhere but its moving about and acting pretty normal. The vet said should just be some stitches and will come right, phew makes me feel beeter. Just called the vet and it has a skull fracture. It can be repaired but will cost lots of $$ and its 14 or 15yrs old so most likely will be put down. Makes me sad. The wake up call was how long it took me to come to a complete stop after it happened, even though i was breaking hard. It really is VERY surprising. I was doing under 100. Its not like a car infront breaks hard and you have to break to. Seeing/experianceing how hard it is to stop for a stationary object is very very sobering. rest in peace little doggy.

Sorry to hear this news Klown. You must be feeling a bit gutted. I hope a green bling will help. (I have to spread it around!!!, well the thought was there) The law of physics actually dictates the stopping distance!!! I have asked myself lately is this law like Murphy's Law!!! :mellow: All the best. RIP doggy.

not cool. If i see any dead pet i'll stop and look for a tag to see if it has contact details, even if its been sitting on the side of the road for a while. My dogs are and always will be part of my family. I think people who have pets know what they mean to thier owners.

never saw the owner. vet contacted them. I would have preferred to crash the bike and miss the dog. assuming i didn't die in resulting crash. Dog more important then bike, me more important then dog.

Wow, glad to hear all is ok albeit the dogs skull.

One of the activites I do on a Sat arvo when Im bored is, find a empty road and pratice braking hard...front brakes and rear..,you learn what your bike can and can not do quick. And your right, getting a 170KG + (including rider) peice or metal to stop fast isnt as easy as one would think. It all takes pratice
