Well went for my first long ride yesterday. Went from Tauranga to Kati Kati which is about 45mins ride. GN went well all beit not too good on the motorway. Struggled a bit on the hills but I found as I rode more the bike seemed to free up more. The only problem I had was finding first gear at one of the intersections which was a bit embarising but that was the only hiccup. Will be coming to drivers bar on Thursday night. Looking forward to meeting you guys and gals.

nice start to the open road experience! My longest time in the saddle is a tossup between 5.5 Hours to Gisborne with a 40L tramping back on my back with tent/clothes/sleeping bag etc... and a late night mission from Auckland to Bulls which was bout 9hrs (two 4.5hr trips) but we stopped for about 45mins to have dinner on the way where as going to gisborne i only stopped for gas.

You've got to start somewhere and like others will confirm, that 45mins will grow exponentially as your ability and confidence improves. My first rides in Wellington were round the bays and stuff like that, heading further and further away from home as I got into the groove. That was a long time ago.

Reading your post I thought about a trip I took to the SI a few years ago. My mate Rick and I left Auckland's North Shore in pissing rain one morning, rode to Wellington, met up with a few bods down there and had a feed, got the 1.00am ferry, kipped for about 90mins, then rode to Kaikoura for brekkie. After that we hit Methven (at the base of Mount Hutt) for an afternoon kip at a mate's and that night we partied till the small hours.

The night after that we were chatting up the barmaid (to no avail) in Winton and pitched tents on the golf course. The day after was Bluff, and then up to Dunedin for a wicked night. Then at dawn it was up to Christchurch and Rick carried on up to the ferry to head home. I went back inland to Methven for more partying where I met my missus. She can ride almost as hard now.

You get better at it as time goes on. Now go practice.....!!!!
