Exciting announcement for KB!!!

You probably want to sit down for this one folks. As you are no doubt aware, this site has grown considerably over the years and has become a fantastic resource for all of the biking community. From organised rides, technical knowledge, new friendships & relationships, tips & tricks to heated debate. It's been a fantastic ride and we should all take our hats off to SpankMe.

However, the cost and resources required to run what has become KB today is astronomical and here's where it gets exciting. Over the past few months, SpankMe and I have been negotiating a commercial arrangement for me to purchase the site. Now before you start freaking out, SpankMe will still own the Kiwi Biker brand and will continue to be involved with the site.

So what changes can we expect? While this is still under negotiation, I want to make it very clear that I don't want to mess with a winning formula, so no major changes for some time until you've had your say. Yes that's right, a true democracy. The future of KB will be in your hands.

There are some initial transparent changes we would like to make that will enhance your user experience. As some of you may know, I run a few companies, one of which is in IT. We do hosting, development, content and all sorts of web stuff. We plan to migrate the site to this platform which will significantly improve the performance. From here we plan to expand the functionality making this a feature rich site. In addition, while your historical financial help has been greatly appreciated, I think there is a smarter way moving forward but again, you will have your say.

We'll keep you posted with progress. Well that's all for now so get back to work!

Running the site has been a fun experience for many years, but the work involved has become just too much for one person to cope with. The thought of passing the banner onto someone else with more resources has been on my mind for some time.

Finn says that Kiwi Biker will continue to run the way it has been run by myself for the past 4 years and I will stay on for awhile as technical resource/advisor until his people are up to speed.

Kiwi Biker has been, and always will be, the best place on the net for bikers.

To start with, clearly the gratuitous nudity and semi nudity will have to go. Such displays are demeaning to women , and Dear Leader particularly disapproves of them.

The language will need to be looked at too, there are far too many naughty words. Fortunately, VBulletin comes with a nice auto-censoring Nanny function that will ** out all naughty words henceforth.

As responsible corporate citizens we naturally will do all in out power to cooperate with the Law Enforcement Services, so all posts referring to any illegal activities (speeding, riding outside conditions of licence etc) will be autoforwarded , with the originators contact details, to a special liason officer at police HQ.

Also, we all have a civic obligation to support our benevolent government in its efforts to make our wonderful country a more wonderful place, promoting gender and racial equality, and diversity awareness. So moderators will be charged with ensuring that no posts are permitted that are in any way critical of the government, the Labour party , or any minority or disadvantaged group (the latter includes the NZ Police Force).

To give extra weight to the moderators arm, Dear leader has arranged with telecom that if a member is infractioned, their Internet access will be completely removed for the period of the infraction.

You've got to be kidding.

It's not a business (i.e. no revenue) so it wouldn't attract such a figure. If it was, based on market value of technology based businesses, it would have to have an EBIT of around $200,000 PA. As it is it's currently running at a loss as Spank has to fund it with some help from members, not to mention the time he puts into it.

If a value were to be put on it, it would have to be based on the potential for it to earn money but herein is the problem. I think if it were to be turned into a business, it would go downhill. However, limited advertising (subtle, without being in our faces) would pay for the running costs and upgrades etc.

It depends if users got charged an annual sub or not (that's currently voluntary based on people's willingness/ability to pay). But looking at say 2,000 paid-up members at $100 each a year, over five years' projected earnings... Of course there are overhead costs that need to be deducted from this, but there would be no need for banner ads or other overtly commercial overtones to detract from the site's current ambience. And it would be a better deal than an Greenacres lawn-mowing franchise.

One could also register the business in the Cayman Islands, remit all of the income to an account there and live tax-free in New Zealand on a VISA card (GST notwithstanding).

You probably want to sit down for this one folks. As you are no doubt aware, this site has grown considerably over the years and has become a fantastic resource for all of the biking community. From organised rides, technical knowledge, new friendships & relationships, tips & tricks to heated debate. It's been a fantastic ride and we should all take our hats off to SpankMe.

However, the cost and resources required to run what has become KB today is astronomical and here's where it gets exciting. Over the past few months, SpankMe and I have been negotiating a commercial arrangement for me to purchase the site. Now before you start freaking out, SpankMe will still own the Kiwi Biker brand and will continue to be involved with the site.

So what changes can we expect? While this is still under negotiation, I want to make it very clear that I don't want to mess with a winning formula, so no major changes for some time until you've had your say. Yes that's right, a true democracy. The future of KB will be in your hands.

There are some initial transparent changes we would like to make that will enhance your user experience. As some of you may know, I run a few companies, one of which is in IT. We do hosting, development, content and all sorts of web stuff. We plan to migrate the site to this platform which will significantly improve the performance. From here we plan to expand the functionality making this a feature rich site. In addition, while your historical financial help has been greatly appreciated, I think there is a smarter way moving forward but again, you will have your say.

We'll keep you posted with progress. Well that's all for now so get back to work!
