I couldn't find out wether riding gear would incur customs duty.
Bike parts/tires don't, just GST if valuable enough.

Protective gear?

Here`s a email i got about motorcycle gloves -

Thank you for your enquiry
Motorcycle gloves are subject to concession that means their is no duty.
The concession is 985517D.
So that they are subject to GST on the cost of the goods + the insurance and freight to get the goods to New Zealand x 12.5%.
Make sure their is no trademark or copyright on the gloves check a general list on our website www.customs.govt.nz under library then importers, commercial importers, trademark copyright.
Clothing is normally 19% duty and GST.
