Just heard on the local news that 81 people were arrested for assault over the last weekend here in Plymouth.Nearest equivalent to this city in N.Z. is Hamilton. When I was there a couple of years ago the fact that 8 assaults occurred over the weekend was front page news.......and 4 of those were the same girl off her head on god knows what.SO next time you wonder why so many Poms head down-under just think on these figures.

My wife (a nurse) and I lived in a lower socio-economic area of Southampton for 6 months, because that's where the hospital accomodation was. I've tried to convey the terror of living there to NZers, but they just don't get it. There were weekly shootings, hourly burglaries, rapes, and Sikh and Muslim school kids beaten up by National Front supporters. Nasty, narrow, small minded place the south coast of England. It is a generalisation, but the level and frequency of violence is staggering.

It may simply be you actually catch and prosecute yours whereas ours are still running about assaulting people and being made to "feel good about themsleves"

Sorry Jim, I responded to the first post on this topic before I read yours, that's awful, I have friends in cornwall ( up the road from south hampton) and they don't seem to have any problems with crime where they live ( Bude)

Cornwall is about 4 hours away, and is a different country. Well that's what the Cornish separatist movement says anyway.

Worthing is a world away from St Mary's in Southampton. Winchester was about 20 minutes up the M3 and it was a world away too. I only visited two places in the UK that were more depressing than Southampton, and that was Folkstone (drug deal central for all of northern Europe), and Newcastle. The Newcastle accent more than made up for the depressing surrounding. Billy Connolly is right though. Notice how Geordie's start off sound well hard, but get squeakier and squeakier toward the end of their sentence?

Lets face it Frosty. The English have always been violent. It's just that having no other countries to bully any more since America took over that role, their society is kind of lost. Add to that the immense social upheaval caused by unchecked immigration, the legendary lack of the English to hold their piss, and the miserable social climate of many parts of English, its no real surprise the place is a worry.
For all its faults, NZ is a much nicer place to be - even if we have to put up with a few English here

Hmmm, I agree with some of your opinions on this matter, but being a pom myself, I take a slight offense to being branded as violent, please do not label anyone by the decisions made by their politicians, the average Joe of any nation has bugger all to do with the dumb and sometimes evil policies they impliment. this country certainly is rapidly heading where other nations have gone in the social disintergration, Nz is a wonderful place, the best way to keep it that way is not to discriminate about any race, colour, creed etc
