Well....I thought it was about time I said hi:wavey:
Went out for my first ride on Sat :ride: ....me a total newbie.....was absolutely crappin myself....but also very excited....but also crappin myself.
Had tried on several occassions to wiggle out of going....but a certain someone was not having a bar of it.....fuckety fuck I had to go. Ohhh and boy did he push me....something that I NEVER will be able to thank him enough for!
Don't ask me where we went...Clevedon? then onto somewhere, around some bays (yes navigation v. bad), I remember some twisties that eventually forced me to talk myself..."look tina look" "you stupid b-arch LOOK" .....now I am doing it when I drive...the looking, not the verbal abuse.
We came out onto the bombays....and my confidence, by then was way better than where I started. Twas getting dark and made my home, had not even really thought about my driveway, which is pretty much this /...anyway, I gear down to what I thought was 1st and turn right into my drive....well...about halfway up I loose all revs cos I am not in 1st big
Ended up havin to drop the bike...well not really drop...more like lay down gently :crybaby:
To cut a long story short I now have to move.....JOKING....needless to say...I know what I did wrong and I know I have to practice hill starts etc.....but confidence has taken a little battering and tomorrow I have to go down this a#*hole of a driveway.
To stop me going ass-over-kite...cos that's what's going on in my head...any suggestions/tips/advice would be GREATLY appreciated:done:

Just keep tapping the gear shift till it won't click down any more gears...
Hold the clutch half in and give heaps of revs too....

Ya could hold 5 grand and use the clutch as a throttle
Or of course --wait for desperate dan to offer to run it up and down the drive for ya
Um seriously Id STRONGLY suggest giving Madduck a Pm and ask her advice---shes 5 foot tall rides a SV650 and has the driveway from HELL ---so shes pretty well qualified to answer.

What about going down this MASSIVE drive....I am thinking 1st and both breaks?

You should be able to use the clutch again. If you use 1st gear you might find the bike jerks too much. Use second and the engine brake won't be so harsh. 90% of your braking comes from the front brake so don't be afraid of it. By using the clutch, 2nd gear and front brake you'll get the hang of it easily enough. As I said though give yourself time to get used to riding.
If that means that you stop on level ground turn you bike using however many backwards and forwards moves you need to point your bike straight up the drive then do that. What ever you are comfortable with. The rest will just happen.

That will work , you have engine braking as well as your front & rear brakes to rely on, assuming the drive isn't gravel :shit: you won't have a problem .
Remember it isn't the falling off that hurts, its the bugger with the camera waiting @ the bottom for a 'kodak' moment that will get ya :gob:

Driveway not gravel, but it is shared....there is a fence...and I will have to miss this...so I have to kinda do a little curve

I'm sure our driveway here isn't that bad... But as a total newbie it looked absolutely HORRID!!!!!!!! When I first got my bike I had a hard time turning it around to actually get it out.. Dropped it a few times.. Learnt very quickly what to do and what NOT to do... Very quickly learned to ride down our drive... But riding up was a different story..
Given time I've managed to ride my bike back up to the house on my own.. Without falling off.. I hope I never come off while trying to get my bike back up to the house.. Its horrible.. But practice practice pratice.. It makes perfect... Get your bike out during the day and practice riding it up the driveway.. You'll get used to it.. and get used to which part of the driveway you should stick to, to make the ride up smoother.. (dunno if this makes sense but I'm trying)
I know with ours I stick to the leftish part of the centre as its the easiest spot to get up...
Bike in 1st.. Revs up.. And she sails on up just fine..
Down in 1st... Front and rear brake, very very gently though!!!!
Once you manage it you'll wonder what you were so worried about...
Hillstarts are easy.. I thought that I couldn't do them.. But thats cause I pushed myself so hard to try and do them I was that nervous it just didn't happen... Til I went for a ride with CBobR and he stopped on a hill.. I had to learn then didn't I.. Didn't even realize I'd done my first hill start til a little later on.. lol
Personally I wouldn't suggest taking your driveway on at night time either.. Least not until your used to it fully... and have your confidence levels up..
Give it time and practice practice practice.. Don't let a drop knock your confidence... We don't always do it right the first time..
Goodluck..

When I first started riding I was sitting at an intersection with a long line of traffic behind me.. light changed and.... i didnt move. Rev rev rev... What the fuck? Not moving. Stall!
Restart.. Rev rev rev... STALL.. aww fuck. Pull the clutch and coyly move over to the curb let the estranged drivers behind me pass. Figured out what the problem was then... I didn't put it in 1st gear. I miss counted my foot taps and was still in 2nd gear. So now I have the habit of tapping my gear switch for good luck everytime I move from stationary.

Hi Stirts! I see you are riding a little ol'Hornet! :woohoo: Anytime you need any help at all with it, drop me a PM! I'm known to be a bit obsessed with my little ol'Hornet - any maintenance, general questions or related queries, I'll do my best to help you out!
Sounds like everyone here has given you plenty of heads-up on what to do with mastering your ride up that driveway, so I'll leave it at that
Would love to see your Hornet, I'm currently in the process of another mad idea of mine - doing a photo collection of all the Hornets ridden by KBers (starting with 250s!) Of course, when I can stop riding my one long enough to get off and do some shots! :o
Keep riding that little ol'Hornet and keep us posted on your progress! :scooter:

OK heres what I do....
Down in first with both brakes very lightly. The other day I found I only had front brakes at 100% and it was a little wobbly when I went just on the front brake.
Going up I sit at the bottom and line the driveway up. Rev the shit outta the bike so the cat gets out of the way. Gun it up in first slam on the rear brake to swing the bike to the left. CLOSE MY EYES and hold my breathe.
Have nearly hit the house a couple of times .......

"Grouted" ? Is that not correct.? Some big bolts set into holes drilled in the concrete , then the spaces filled with concrete. That's grouting isn't it. Anyway, if not, then "whatever the heck it is "ed into the concrete.
(I've never been quite sure about those concrete and brickwork terms)

It is "set" into concrete, since grouting is for decorative purposes rather than for strength. I was actually referring to the Swahili words of "intot he"...

Will try this....I like the "CLOSE MY EYES" part....try not to hit the house, and hopefully run my b/f over....hee hee JOKING
Doesn't sound like the best plan of attack. I'd expect to hear you binned it a 3rd time risking injury to you (bad) and damage to your bike (also bad).
Have you got an experienced rider who can come along and coach you through hill starts/riding up steep driveways?
Get used to riding the clutch at the point of tension and learn to pull away while riding the clutch.... use the same principle up gentle slopes then try the drive. In other words, build your confidence up gradually and get the technique right so it serves you in all situations... not just your driveway... hill-starts in busy traffic being the thing I would be concerned about here.
Remember the rear brake too, especially down-hill as a good control device. Gentle pressure on the rear is important during slow-speed riding. Always cover the clutch with your fingers under 30km/h.

No longer buggering...now buggered...but you have all you need...you did all along...just click your heels together and say "I must harden the fuck up", "I must harden the fuck up"
If you get out there and just ride T, I cant wait for a months time when you wonder what all the fuss was about with the drive...you just gotta get out there. Ride slow and careful, but ride nonetheless and you will be amazed at your progress in these early stages I promise....perhaps you need a carrot dangled in front of your face to aid the cause....:shifty:

Stirts has done us all proud! She has conquered her driveway and made it look easy!
I've never seen someone with the same enthusiasm for using cleaning products and lubing chains like me! :eek5:
I got lost on the way to Stirts place ... was riding to the Busa's place I think! (Damn SMAPS ... Weiti Toll Road doesn't exist yet!)
Back around and found a little black hornet parked outside a steep driveway. To be honest, I saw a previous driveway that was narrow, had gravel and a blind corner ... thought that was Stirts and thought
"Blimey! Now I know why she's having problems!"
But then, I saw the hornet and the lovely concreted driveway (steep as it may be). A quick coo-ee, some quick lessons in throttle, revving and tips and away Stirts went!
Bumpity-bump-bump went the little black hornet
Gosh that was easy said Stirts!
We went for a little ride, up and down some hills
Stopped, start and a little fang for thrills -
As her final test, she rode the hornet up the driveway
And Stirts turned with a smile, that made my day!
Good on ya Stirts - ya learnt and caught on fast! With those twisties you have  you'll be blipping your throttle and scrubbing off your chicken strips in no time!
Now, remember... chain lube, autosol, acid free mag cleaner, washing mitts and always pat and talk and hug and kiss and look after your cute little black hornet!
Hmmm ... time for another pootle I say! :innocent:

Ya could hold 5 grand and use the clutch as a throttle
Or of course --wait for desperate dan to offer to run it up and down the drive for ya
Um seriously Id STRONGLY suggest giving Madduck a Pm and ask her advice---shes 5 foot tall rides a SV650 and has the driveway from HELL ---so shes pretty well qualified to answer.
Ha ha haaaaa....I have seen the warnings re: "desperate dan"
Ive looked... I cant find a warning label on me anywhere. So I must be ok. :innocent:

True words you speak ....once I had beaten the driveway I got on my bike and went up the road....v.twisty...corners are marked at 25k, 35k etc, had been v.cautious previous rides...overly cautious infact....and quite frankly shit scared....but yesterday I had a suprisingly smooth ride through those corners. Things in my head just clicked together....felt farken awesome....I still have the goofy smile on my face.

Haha I know what the smile is like... I get the meanest dimple smile after I've had my bike out..
I also found the more I worried, and the more I pushed myself to do things right the first time the more mistakes I made.. Huge confidence knock..
Now I've just learnt to laugh at myself.. Even when I have my leg pinned under my bike and petrols leaking everywhere...:shit:
Obviously you have found someone who you are comfortable having around, to teach you things...
My partner taught me the basics with what he knew..
Now I'm out on the road and I have CBobR riding with me when I have time off work and showing me/explaining things to me... Its easier when your comfortable around the person... I've even suprised myself and he's tricked me into doing things that I didn't think I could do..
I bet you now feel like your driveway is "easy" right? ;)
Bling coming your way.. Congrats..

Awww :o wasn't me! After all, you're the one who has to ride your little ol'hornet! I can't ride it up the driveway for you ... you have to! I could feel your grin when you got everything down to pat! I was afraid your helmet would crack open because you were smiling so much!
And yes... those corners you have as part of your ride home has me so jealous! :shit: Out of respect for your location, I will never divulge it to others - but it is so good, I will be making special pootles out your way just to do them! I was grinning so much just riding through them!
Oh yeah ... as for those items, I was instructing zeozen today when we were at Donor's getting his mancove ready! He was cleaning his bike and I was saying "now, you don't want to be doing it like that!"
But I digress, get yourself to that Disco Dan thingymabob and learn even more stuff! Now, I'll have to catch up with Lteejay to make sure she's looking after her little ol'hornet good! :msn-wink:
And I will bring mine after I have hugged it and washed it and polished it and talked to it and patted it and refueled it and checked it's tyre pressures and topped up it's oil and aligned it's lights and armourall it's plastic bits and lubed it's chain and .... :innocent:
