View Full Version : My dream bike - as gutless as a GN, should I still buy?

There's a Royal Enfield Bullet Electra 2006 (500cc) for sale in Wellington and I WANT IT! It's pretty close to my dream bike.
But I did a bit of research on the net and found it's only 22hp, the same as a GN250. AARRG!
So, should I get this awesome stylish bike with crap power...
or have a couple of cheap old jap bikes which I can thrash and which have more power? I'm certainly not a racer, on or off the road, but I do like some zip.
Hmmm...

I thought about getting one of those once upon a time, but the low numbers scared me. It's reassuring to have a little "poke" to get out of sticky situations. Still a cool bike though, I'm wondering how hard it would be to get a bit more grunt out of them.

BUY IT!!!!
It's not just about peak power. That long-stroke single will have ridiculous amounts of torque from idling speed.
Plus who cares about power when you're riding something like that as well?
Seriously cool bike. Sounds awesome, too.

Hmm... I don't need much convincing, one person to say "Buy It!" and I am all ready! A test-ride first though. ooo!

From talking to an Enfield owner they appear to be fun bikes, in the same way that all four stroke singles are. Not a lot of power, and you're in top by the end of the road.
You want some exciting like an RD400 with spannies, in the wet, with OEM tyres. Now where's that ACC form.

Buy it. You can always have another more powerful bike as well.

No, it was parked in town. I stopped to drool and inspect closely because I love the look and then I noticed it was for sale...

Depends what you want the bike for - if you want it to potter along the highways and byways at 80-90 kph, dirt roads and all, or commute, without having a hangup about acceleration rates, astounding speed or pin point handling and are content to just cruise around - get one!
I'd get one as a 2nd or 3rd bike because, sometimes, you just need to sit back, smell the roses and let the world go by.

Buy it, you know you want to.
Besides not everything is about power and if it really bothers you it can be improved.

Try a GT750 Suzuki 750cc two stroke with 20 broken spokes in the rear wheel and 2+ inches of lateral movement at the wheel rim. "Hmm. I guess that explains why the handling was somewhat odd on the way back" .
You'll find the Renfield will FEEL more powerful than the GN though, because hills and such won't pull you down the way they will on the 250. The old Enfields (Briddish not Indian) would cruise all day at 60-65mph , up hill down dale. I would presume the Indian ones would not be less. Can you find one in a dealers somewhere and take it for a demo ride? Or ask the guy who's selling it for a test ride. See what it feels like. They feel a lot different to a GN.

Buy it coz you want it.
Buy a disposable sportsbike later if you still feel the need.
My new bike only puts out 53hp but still I will love and cherish it as it saves me money on speeding tickets!
You can't put a price on Character.

Don't worry, it's a Ducati. It'll make up for it in repairs and maintenance.

Had the pleasure to ride one everyday for 3 months in India in 97. Cool comfy beastie with an honest work attitude. Speeding was irrelevant, as anything over 70kmh overthere is suicide.(truck passing truck passing car, passing oxcart etc)
If you like it, go for it.

Yeah, but it's a watercooled twin... boring
Edbear

Buy it! The Classic is going to disappear because of emissions regs and the new alloy motor just isn't the same.
Drop the countershaft sprocket a tooth and fit the shorty muffler and you'll easily cruise at 110km/h. I know the importers in Albany, they know all the little tricks with these bikes!
I'd have one like a shot if I could afford one right now, but one is definitely on my future purchase list!

Its your money- if you want it, buy it. It definitly wont be "just another bike", and if it floats YOUR boat(not every other buggers), thats all that matters
