A Conservative councillor who criticised the looters of shipwrecked MSC Napoli is under investigation himself… for allegedly plundering one of the cargo of BMW bikes on the ship.

Stuart Hughes, 55, has been interviewed by police over allegations he removed goods without reporting them.

Mr Hughes insists he is innocent and claims he is the victim of a 'dirty tricks campaign'. He said: "I did not take anything that was washed ashore from the ship despite claims to the contrary. I had stacks of the salvage forms that members of my constituency came forward to collect – do you not think I would have thought to fill one out myself?”

While the investigation continues, Mr Hughes has withdrawn his services from the Devon and Cornwall Police Authority.

I found it quite funny seeing the locals happily nabbing they could lay their hands on then getting upset when outsiders did the same.Last I heard BMW had reported all the bikes as stolen,I suspect some archaic law against the kind of legal firepower they can afford will be a no contest.
It was the "salvage" laws that encouraged wrecking, quaint local custom of lighting fires to lure ships onto rocks, killling the survivors and robbing whatever was washed up,meanwhile the slave trade was thriving and kids were being sent up chimneys...it's what's now known as the good old days.
