Hi.
I am just wondering how many inventors there are on KB.
If there are a few I would love to hear what you have done...
(Any special tool makers?)

I pride myself on invention of the wearable computer mouse - the one built into a ring and controlled by a thumb (allowing simultaneous control of the mouse and typing). I never told anyone (and had no resources to patent it) but it was reinvented by Belkin and showed up in CompUSA for $19.95 6 years later. Can't say it was a big hit though...

well, i have my crazy schemes on inventing things (like flavoured toilet seats and the DISCOMBOBULATOR 2000 for automobiles... but sadly, no one has ever taken interest in my intellect... I wonder why...

Flavoured toilet seats? I don't even want to consider what would lead you to think of that.

Did some things back in the days, computer controlled waste heat recovery system which won an award at the national science fair and a PIC controlled silt detection/diversion device with which I took out the national brightsparks competition.
Never actually got past the working prototype stage though...

Oh,no!! As I understand it Flavour is associated with taste and I don't even want to think of eatable toilet seats!!!
Has anyone invented or build something specially for bikes?

Quite a few electronic related stuff in the past.
I'm working on a couple of things at the moment; A portable solid waste compactor (for residential and light commercial/industrial) and a machine process for effeciently sorting different grades of plastics.
Hopefully have the compactor proto-typed in the next month or so, then going to setup a new company to develop it further and eventually market them. Got quite a lot of interest in NZ, but want to focus on Asia.

Sounds really interesting... How would you get the sorter to do the sorting?(Or is it a trade secret.. :) )
I think its actually a very active sector to be working in.. Lots of investors are seeing that recycling and going green is important and will only get more important in the future!!!

My invention is called the "Shower-e-oke". It's a waterproof MP3 player with built-in speakers that one sticks to the wall in one's shower so that one can sing along to the show tunes and Abba's Greatest Hits that are downloaded, complete with the lyrics.

'Invention' is a ridiculous term.
There is science, and then there is engineering.
I've never met anyone who designed anything truly useful and then referred to it as an 'invention'.

And that, Dear Heart, is why the "Shower-e-oke" remains an invention...

LOL.. Might be because while you are working on it,it's an invention and as soon as it's done you sell it on Trade-Me with it's own name. (Else how would you tell the difference if they were all called inventions.. :second: and you can charge more if it has a really catchy name+description of what it's suppose to do!!!)

Hi.
(Any special tool makers?)
I have made a few tools (nothing flash) for use on earth moving equipment and tractors, wouldn,t call it inventing as I am sure the proper tools already exsisted and had been mass produced and cost heaps more than what it cost me to make ,
I would think many Kiwi farmers have done the same thing without giving it a second thought !

I once invented a rotating toilet paper holder to solve the problem of whether toilet paper should roll over or under.
I got second prize in a competition for it.
But that said, toilet paper should always roll over, so you dont get your poo up the wall?

Now that's what I like to hear!!!
There are so many tools available today that are so crap or overpriced... Opens up lots of markets for people that can produce local stuff that is better quality than the cheap chines imports and a lot cheaper than the Brand name American stuff..

Damn I'd hate to be a fly on the wall in your toilets then! I normally remove some paper from the roll and then wipe my arse with it.

Yea but what if you have to reach for more. If the paper is rolling under, you will have to touch the wall. And then the next person will touch the wall reaching for some paper, and they may then again touch the wall adding to the mess there. It goes on like this until your wall is furry.

It is a very active industry and there certainly is a lot of money to be made, even in countries like New Zealand. However, in Asia the market is huge and grossly under-developed, Asian countries are only now realising the effects of their poor waste management.
The specific sector of the recycling industry I am in, depending on how you look at it, is worth approximately $22 million per annum (in NZ). But if you look at a country like Japan, it's worth nearly $1 billion per annum with very little "organised" competition.
Did anyone else hear about the scam where Japanese people were sold British and Australian sheep and told that they were poodles? Apparently one victim didn't find out until they took their "poodle" to the vet to have it's nails trimmed, only to be told that it had hoofs - and was a sheep.
Large market density
Lack of knowledge on the consumers part
Cheaply acquired product, re-sold for $1,600 if I recall correctly
Now that's inventive!

I use Autocad Inventor 11 which is nice to use and allows you to materialise the image floating about in your head

In some operations humans are used for the sorting of a select range of known plastics (i.e. they're sperated by colour).

Also they use a machine that squirts aimed jets of air at a waterfall of plastic bits throwing them in to the correct chute.

Yes.. Very creative seeing the gap with the sheep. Just sorry they could not put there creativity to good use.
Wonder if they would have been able to sell the same "Poodles" to Mr Bush and convince him it would help with the War that he is so addicted to!!!

I think convincing George W. Bush Jr. would be the easy part, getting the sheep to live in a desert environment is where the difficulty would lay.

I use a Co2 gas for feeding aquatic plants, gas bottles (like the sodastream) were expensive in the long term and required fiddly set-up (regulators etc).
Began using natural yeast, however if you get the mixture wrong it begins to flow up the pipe work and can enter the tank. It then multiplies in hours and will suffocate all the fish. I began to design a fluid trap, and it simply consists of a jam jar with the piping from the yeast container entering at the top and another pipe through the top to the aquarium. Any yeast mixture that does find it's way to the fluid trap drips to the bottom of the jar and the gas continues to flow to the aquarium.
Not really an iinvention as such, as they can be purchased but they are expensive for some reason. Which is why I created my own.
The only problems I encountered was standard airline tubing actually allows small amounts of Co2 gas to escape through the walls of the tubing. Only negligible amounts but at the start of the yeast cycle this can mean a longer pressurisation period before the gas bubbles begin to go through the underwater difusser. Also another problem is the yeast itself, as it will poison itself in about a week and needs replacement.
I wont go into the affects of Co2 and how it alters the PH, carbonate hardness and general hardness qualities of the water etc etc...

I heard that Cowpoos invented the Polariod camera. He needed a device that could take an instant photo so he could secretly take pictures of a contraption he labeled "the internal combustion engine" which he later put into a motorcycle and invented what we call the Superbike.
There we have it.

Got a few things in the works now. but i dont spend stuff all time on them, i think im lazy.
In terms of an invention - nothing i have ever made is an invention, like the car/computer etc
All are just innovations.
I prefer the research and design rather than all the rest.
Its a pity NZ is so constrained with whom it employs to do what. We leave everything else to entrepreneurs.
It sucks, unless your company is already started.

I had a working model of a jet boat, (steam powered), buzzing around in the wash-house tank in the early 50's, prolly 10 years before the Hamilton saw the light of day. And, no, he didn't steal my idea. It was a completely different system.
I also installed a flashing light that worked off the doorbell for a deaf client.

I am sure MS have taken a plenty ideas from other companies and called it their invention.

Shame the LTSA (read this as you wish motu I cant care to keep up with their name changes!) requires you to have indicator lenses that have a standard marking on them..... any marking basically but they must have one...... though that system don't have lenses , but your covered if you keep the stock ones for WOF time
