View Full Version : I'm looking around

I've been doing the rounds of the Auckland bike shops and getting some advice on what bikes I should be looking at for my soon upgrade.

at the moment, on the cards are
VTR1000 (post 2001)
ZX636R
CBR600
SV650
and I only just saw, I think it was a ZX650F (sprots tourer)

I figure CBR and 636 are out because I'm thinking comfort (mine and pillion), I want to be able to go down on long rides on occasion, but on the other hand, she handles sitting on the back of a 250 pretty good and I took the CBR250 to wellington and back without hassle.

also I commute 20k a day so it needs to be able to sit in traffic ok.

I'm looking around 10k with a bit of leniency if its a good deal

anything I've missed that I just 'have' to test ride?

test ride them, and the one that does the best wheelie wins.

Dont underestimate how good, fast and a valuable learning tool a 400cc is, the best of which being an nc30/nc35.

I know one which went up for sale today...

heh, I intend to keep this* bike for a while so I don't want to be disappointed with something that doesn't have enough grunt after a while.

http://www.motorbikes.be/en/compare/631/1485/ = only a 30% HP increase

*IE: the new one

With me riding it, make that 50% increase :shifty:

The extra mid range makes such a huge difference, power figures alone dont do it justice.

for what you are wanting to do, commute, tour 2up.. the 600s would be the way to go i would think

The 2 V's (SV and VTR) would only just be warming up on your short commute, though they both would be great for pillion and touring with the low down torque. But at the end of the day, take em for a test ride and see what meets your needs...

I've never taken it on the track and only used it for commuting (70km round trip) and a tour of the South Island. I believe the previous female owner may have taken it on the track once (Ask Annette or DMNTD). I don't think you would be disappointed in the SV1000 for what you want to do.

I second that... I believe there is a limited edition Titanium Silver one for sale at Mt Eden right now.

60km commuting round trip 5 days a week
4648km in 9 days SI trip ... priceless .. no sore backs, wrists or necks http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=46309

never have to worry about lack of power.... and great 2up ... no need to change down with the extra 36cc of torque.

I have a 2003 VTR1000f. You can pick good models up for around 8,000k if you are prepared to look around. I am 5'8 and 80kilo, and it hauls my old ass around at a fair old clip. Leave about $800 for a front fork upgrade (go for 0.95kg springs. the standard are 0.55kg, so they can be a bit soft) and better front discs.(braided lines are a good idea as well)
Plenty of low down grunt, good tank for a magnetic tank bag, and it aint to hard to add a pack rack. For really long rides get a sheepskin.
It really depends on what you want...I say test ride them all.
Having owned little and big Jap 4's as well as couple of exotic twins, I say go for a twin...but i'm biased. None of the bikes that you are looking at will let you down

Yeah, that's the key.
I don't agree about the VTR though: mine was OK for commuting (once I raised the bars, as it was the early model), but not so good for touring with a passenger. We managed OK, but once we tried the VFR, the VTR felt very cramped and uncomfortable in comparison.

Yeah, the VFR: it's a good all-rounder.
And if you're looking at that sort of bike, you could consider the RF900 and GSX750. They're not as classy as the VFR, but good value for money.

i'd second the VFR. quite possibly the best all-round machine for the $$$.

like this one - ex-rental but underseat pipe model and like all VFRs, single side arm

Third the VFR800. Heard nothing but good things about them - if I allowed myself more to spend on my next bike, I'd definitely be considering one myself. Only difference for me is I'm not ruling out bikes like the CBR and ZX because I probably won't be doing as much touring, nor do I need a comfy pillion seat. :shifty:

Test ride everything in sight!

I was pretty much settling (although pre test ride) on the VTR, Coreys your bike sounds awesome do you have pics?

I haven't thought much about a VFR and TBH I dont know the difference
