I'm curious about adding a gear indicator to my bike. I'm not having much trouble shifting, I can hear it fairly well, I just second guess myself - plus I want a new gadget :D
Acumen and Datatool both make an indicator you just wire up. From all I"ve read, they fit to bikes with an eletronic speedo and tacho. They both also have a version that fits the cable driven bikes (but I never find them listed for sale!). My bike I don't *think* has either, which is why I need some help figuring it out.
For the tacho input, I believe I can wire it to the low side of the coil (as I've seen done on a previous tacho install on a JPN VTR250 page). I *know* it does not have a tacho ;)
But the speedo, not sure about. I have the cable that goes up the front fork to the speedo gauge, which leads me to believe I have a cable driven speedo (who needs common sense?). *However* on my wiring diagram here it shows the bike has a 'pulse generator' which runs through the same harness as the 'neutral switch' and the 'oil pressure switch'. The pulse generator wires run into the main spark unit box.
1. What is the pulse generator?
2. If it is speedo input related, would it be possible to use that as the source for a speedo input on an eletronic Acumen DG8 or DataTool DiGi-C (the regularly listed gear indicator units that are not the special cable driven type?).
There is a price difference in the two, which I can accept. However, I don't want to if I don't have to.
