Hey people,
I was wondering what everyone else is thinking of getting once they've finished with their 250s and can move on to something bigger??

I would love a GSXR600 or Daytona 675 once i'm finished my 'apprentiship' on the 250..Is this being over ambitious???

Thoughts please :innocent:

If you are sensible and restrained then no problem. It's a big jump from what you are on now.

I'm keeping mine once I `graduate', even if I do get a bigger bike :D. I keep reading about people who used to have a 250RS and remember it very fondly, or go and buy another later down the track. Of course these people happen to be Poms and Japanese, so perhaps their viewpoint is a little skewed.

However... GB400/GB500. Or something nice and old and unreliable, like a T120 or similar.

ummm....i went from a NS250R to a GPz900R then left biking for 10 years, then got the NC21

....and i still haven't got a full

(soon tho)

I'd like a 600 sportbike... CBR or R6 ideally.

GB400tt and NC30s really take my fancy though.

i went from a 89' zxr250
to a 02 gsxr600
now iv'e got a 06 gsxr 600:love:
people say that its a big jump, but for me it didn't seem like much
sure they have a heap more power and go faster. comes in handy for passing traffic.
But they are just the same as a small cc bike to ride.
Your only going to get bitten if your stupid on the thing:innocent:
eg. out riding your skill level.
i haven't propley rode a litre bike yet. but for what i did, i found even easyer then the 600, more toque and smoother through the rmp range. Didn't wind the thing out, that would have scared me, just crusied on it. Knowing how much money i had between my legs keeped the speeds to the legeal limits:done:

Any of your 600 sporties is quite a sizeable jump in hp over your road 250s. But it probably comes down to your riding style. If you lean into corners hard there's going to be little difference on a bigger bike.

Watch out for the extra torque pushing corner to corner as you'll accelerate harder and the corners will come at ya quicker. Also you'll be carrying that extra speed into the corner so tyre selection important but, again, all your sporties are already shod with fairly decent rubber.

Personally you look like a Daytona 675 man to me (40ftlb at 4000rpm), but i could be wrong :done:

i went from an rgv to a gsxr750... same year, similar handling, the overall power of the gsxr is noticable but the 250 taught me clutch control and to be easy on the wrist.

Having said that, i've now done 10,000 on the gsxr and im only really cranking it through the revs now, before now i think i probably road it so it gave a similar response to putting on the power as the rgv did

Aye, I be doing the same - in fact, I will never get rid of any bikes I get! I was looking at getting a GB400 from 'tardme the other day! (till someone bought it using the buynow )

For me, I'll be getting the bigger brother to my little ol'Hornet and for a sprotsbike, I'm looking at a CBR600 also - something to fang around a trackday. Also drooling over dirtbikes at the moment also!

Yes, I am crazy. Yes, I am not sensible. If I was, would I be riding bikes?

Eventually I will end up with one of each brand and all the various engine configurations (got the I4, two-stroker...missed out on a nice single...)

So, yeah - sounds like you got the right attitude!

I'm thinking of a 400. Either another 400 (one for the road, one for offroad) or a Morris Minor. I would kinda like a car...
I just sold my very first bike, the old GN250, it was sad to say goodbye but oh well.

I went from a ZXR250c to a gsxr 600 K4. Pretty smooth transition, could power wheelie instead of having to clutch it up like on the zxr...stoppied are still not as good as I could do on the ZXR though.

PS - I now love my gsxr with an un-dying passion. Yes I would prefer the extra horses, but damn does she look ever so sexy in black and orange, really brings out the colour in my leathers...yes they are black too...

Im still doing the 250 thing but ive ridden a duc 1000ds, vtr1000 and BuddyL's ex k1gsxr...oh and a hyosung gtr250.

The litre v-twins were awesome...so rider friendly...heaps of grunt at any revs and still good handling...espechially the duc(although the duc killed the wrists). It felt so calm at speed as the engine didnt feel like it was trying. The gsxr was crazy though...that thing felt fast although probably didnt accelerate any harder was just the way that the power was delivered which made it seem harder.

With all bikes, the brakes werent much better than those on the 250 so braking from speed was a bit of a shock

I haven't riden anything other than a GN250 (not counting the CB250 I did my handling course on).

I really like the look of the Kawasaki ED6 (called the Ninja 650 in the US)

Seems to strike a nice balance between power and ease of use.

But purely on looks alone , an R1 - there is one parked next to a clients site that I visit a lot.
It looks like it should be strapped to the underside of a bomber and used as a precision strike weapon.

I recon the jump from 250 to 600 is not overly ambitious. I've had a blat on a couple of sprots 400's and they were very similar to my 250. More power sure, but nothing major.

600 is the way to go and if it could be a 675, I'd count myself a very lucky boy indeed!

If you want to go up then you've gotta do it some time.. no sense in being scared of the beasts that lie ahead! Just take a picnic of common sense and self restraint and the worlds your big, fast, stable, comfy oyster.

In saying that, my dream bike is a ZZR1100, I'd get a ZZR600 but there just doesn't seem to be that many around :(

Not that I have funds for either bike.. but it's always nice to think of the future :P

I thought the Ninja 650 in the states was the ER6F ?
If that's the bike you're talking about then apparently it's got rave reviews of being a nice step up bike or even a leaner bike (I think that's stretching it a tad...).

After wandering through Haldanes today, I have seen my future bike.

It's obscenely large, drowned in red paint and blingy chrome, and has a sexual appeal to it.

It's the M109R Boulevard

Of course, it'll happen several hours after hell freezes over...

...but by the gods, I want one!

My future bike changes on a weekly basis :)

From an Sv650 to SV1000 to DL650 to Triumph Tiger to whatever I walk past that strikes my fancy.

However, I am supremely happy with my VTR at the moment so i'll continue to think about it, change my mind for the next 6 months or so.

I still can't believe you want to take the path of a cruiser.
....but I have to agree, that is one badass mother.

It would be pretty funny when we both get to our bigger bikes, to see a behemoth of a cruiser next to a fully faired sports/tour playing happy families.. I bet biker onlookers will think we're blind or something! 2 races of bikes interacting !? How can this be!!?

I went from an FXR150 to a ZX-6R and I wouldn't dream of going back.

I didn't find the jump too hard. Sure it's got probably 6 times more power, but it's not overwhelming. I love it. The hardest adjustment I'm finding is the handling. I can't just pust it round like I could witht the FXR. All it takes is some practice

Hi,

I've just got back into biking after a 20+ year absence and went for a 675. The reviews I was reading about the 600 4's was that they were a bit too peaky for round town. I rode the 675 for the first time after 15 minute test ride on a GN250 and thought holly sh**, but that because it only had two wheels and the riding position was totally different to the 250.

The salesman's advise was "it's all in your right hand". Wind it on too quick and it'll put you on your back. Jump on the brakes too hard and you'll go over the top - good advice really.

I found that I pretty quickly got used to both the acceleration and the brakes and my riding is improving each time I go out. So, as long as you take it easy and don't let your confidence get too far ahead of your ability (it will happen, so be weary of it), then I'd go for something in the 600 range.

Cheers,

David.

Yeah lots of good stuff here...it is all in the wrist.
My first ride on the 600 was a bit intimidating cos i had it wide open to pass a couple of cars on my ride of it...wasnt doing anything special in terms of gears and didnt jerk it on but it got light on the front...awesome feeling.
For a step up i wouldnt hesitate to get a 600 except that i dont need to go that fast....also the tyres wear out fairly quickly compared to a 400.
Yeah im still undecided!!!....decisions!!

My bike still has enough in it to give me a fright - and put on a track I dont think I could ride it to its limit..
I want a k6 750 for my next bike, but Im staying on the aprilia for a while, and I wont sell it. - Ill never find one like it (that I painted and made carbon parts for it - as well as the mechanics ive done)
Biggest bike Ive ridden was an 06 r6 and it has more power than I feel ill ever be able to use (eg - how they ride them in supersport)
But a 750 will give me those 150+ power wheelies.. and If its got enough power for kevin schwantz...

Anything is possible, but i would recommend a cheapie first - then you can be more reckless and refine 'exactly' what you want.
400's are good value these days - and seem to hold their price well.

I _need_ a bigger bike because feel (and look) awkward on my smaller bike.
And having accelleration in any gear incase of emergency is something you can never take forgranted in my opinion.

I've had a very hairy moment where a nutcase on the motorway was weaving in and out of traffic at about 140+ kmph, he was coming up fast and I barely managed to get up from 110 to about 120/30 to move out of the way as he was coming up my ass.

Now if I had a bigger bike, I could have not only avoided that with ease, but I could have also caught up even easier and knocked off a side mirror or two..

Just kidding..

.....really.

You just gotta learn how to ride on the corners and stop relying on the bike to catch up on the straights.

Why would I get either a hyosung (apparently slower than a gpx) or a zxr (which still isn't as good as a 600, and the age is getting on.) when I could easily get a decent 600 or even a litre bike for the same price... ?

Tis the natural step up thing, but food for thought though...when i got my 600 sportbike, i didnt have it for long cos i knew i wanted bigger, while the 675 is nothing short of drool, you can pick up an 06' Daytona 955i for quite alot less

hyosung...because its bigger

I was on a FXR 150 and got a ZX6R it was a big jump but I wasnt stupid when I was greeted with all that power in a bike.

A bike is only as dangerous as how you ride it. Why? because you control it.

After the Ninja decided it didnt like its rear brake system anymore, I decided to buy a GSXR600.

They are very light bikes, and you can really lean them over in twisties. I'd reccomend a gsxr because it dosent have alot of get up and go compared to the ninjas.

Then again SVs are also really good.

Just look at your riding style, purpose and what you intend to do when you get it. (eg. weekend riding, commuting etc)

At the end of the day just remember that it'll take a wee while to get used to your new machine.
