View Full Version : Adventure Assault - Where next?
Hi Everyone
Well I have been thinking about the next Adventure Assault, coming to a community near you!
Where would you all like to go? Please check one of the boxes where you would like to ride to next
I guess that as winter is here, that we should stick to good tracks and gravel roads, of course local knowledge is important I have added a few areas that we could combine a bit of riding in.
We need to think about travel to and from the area of course?
So that will be the limiting factor on how far we can ride?
So vote where you would like to see the next Adventure Assault
If you are a local resident in these areas and know a few good tracks/roads to use then by all means help us to organise it.:done:
I don't care where, but I'm in.

Somewhere we jafas can find.....
Ooooh, and has to have decent coffee!
Zukin - all the options you've offered appeal - for me it's always a matter of balancing adventure motorcycling with other commitments.
I've suggested a ride incorporating Fisher's Track near National Park - I understand this is moderately challenging on big bikes. Search ADV site for Vege and 4Skins posts of this ride they've done times past.
I was reluctant to post a link to that site since I'm unclear what that does to KiwiBiker's ISP costs.
Cheers and thanks for taking the initiative - Aslan :scooter:

Hi everyone,
Looking at the list of riding places and have ridden all of them in this beautifull land of ours i've just sent my Tiger to Australia to taste red dirt for a smalll ride 6 months.
Fleethual is doing a couple of weeks with me from Sydney to Melb.
Staying at Slippery OZ's who we meet up with on the Passe's ride,It has been on list to do for a long time,so if any of you get a little bored riding in NZ just throw your bike on a boat and meet up for a ride around.
All the places you are looking at are excellent rides so enjoy, but the time for me has come to look a little further.:scooter:

Er, 'D' All of the above??
Hopefully I'll be able to make the next one. I'm free 26/27 this month, then June is a writeoff. July is looking good.
I could organise another MMMMM ride pretty easily, But my Whangamomona Pub T-shirt is almost worn out & I need another so I reckon we should go there 1st!
Cheers

I will see how the calender is looking for that weekend for me too, June is busy for me to with Targa (in Rotorua) and all that other stuff one must do :dodge:
I am keen to do Whangamomona too, should it be a gravel ride or do you know some good tracks around there too?

It's really gotta be just gravel in that area over winter, the papa country turns to total poo when it's wet. But all the little roads & tunnels west of Whanga make for some good fun. I'll consult the map tonight.

Admire you're enthusiam Aslan but Fisher's would be a little more than a "moderate" challenge on the bigger bikes anytime in winter. Last time I rode it was on the XR650 when we went up for the Raurimu get together and it was slippery then. I reckon an assault around Hawkes Bay or better still, a re-run of the route North for the Kaipara ride, perhaps as far as Marakopa, might be the go.
Hi
Is Fishers Track, also know as The 42nd Traverse?
If so I have done that few times
its great
If it is the same then you will also find they close it over winter now

Nope, quite different.

Fisher's is an old logging track, it's about 21km all up heading pretty much due East from National park village over to Upper Retaruke onto some pretty nice gravel roads that loop back around through Kaitieke to Raurimu or further North to Taumaranui. It's a great ride but in the wet, with the best part of 17km downhill dropping from 900 metres to 400 metres and a mixed surface with a fair proportion of para and/or grass, makes for some interesting cornering.
The 42 Traverse was included in the 2004 BMW Safari held in Rotorua. It's about 46kms through State Forest (Tongariro) 42, and is full of long and often rutted downhills. The track surface varies from gravel to mud, some stream crossings (can get real deep, real quick), and as usual with all good things there is normally some bad - and yes it is it's usually closed over winter months. The scenery is absolutely spectacular - it's a unique track that you can either enjoy on a more relaxed and peaceful outing or tear the knobs off your tyres with your friends.
Both tracks are very popular with walkers and mountain bikers, so you need to be a little smart.

The uruweras/waikaremoana area has decent gravel and is pretty scenic. Even if the weather has been crap it would still be very ridable (especially for the punters with heavy bikes).
There's a few good doc camping areas there or else we could stay in Mahia and ride back a different way?

Hi there
Yep the basic plan would be to meet at Pohokura Road (Taupo end of the Napier Taupo Highway, so depending where you are coming from you could leave either Napier or Taupo) then through the forest to Minginui and then onto Waikaremoana for an overnight stop, then on towards Wairoa via plenty of back country gravel roads to Napier.
Also Clint is thinking about doing the MMMMM ride again, search on ADV rider to read his post on this trip

Hey man, couldn't find the thread on the advrider forum. Anyway, maybe the jafas would meet you further north (round waiotapu or rotomahana). Also, from wairoa we may head north rather than south towards napier...
Any suggestions for the return journey? any other jafas?
Also, have we got a date for the ride yet? We could meet on a Saturday for the main ride. That gives us the friday night to get to where the ride's supposed to start from?

Hi
Here (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146148) is the MMMMM ride report from Clint.
We will do that again for sure aye Clint
I am leaning more towards Whangamomona trip this time, but we have to work on a date.
Riders will be coming from all over the North Island, we will probably plan for a late am start to allow riders to get there without rushing. Then overnight somewhere comfortable (like the pub)
I will keep you posted
Cheers Scott
Hey,
I want to join in again... so keep it simple for those of us who can only haul our bikes up so many times!
How about the Makairo track the other way. I hear it's really nice this time of year! I'll bring my survival suit and C90 with a picnic hamper this time.

Howsabout... to keep it cruisy... about 350 km, on the Sat, starting at Whangamomona, head south then turn off at Matau down Junction Rd, out to Urenui, then into Okoki, Kaka Rd, Uruti Rd, Moki Rd, Kiwi Rd, back out to hwy 3, Awakino (lunch maybe?, if keen a (60km round) side trip to Waikawau beach, back towards Piopio on Taumatamaire Rd, then back down Ohura Rd et al to Ohura, then back to Fonga, maybe taking in a couple of side loops?
Sunday?
For those that aren't aware of the Magnificence that is the Whangamomona Hotel, It's a bloody great pub, they do Dinner, Bed & Brekky for around $80 & it's bloody good, the meals are the full works, If you're on a budget
there is a very cheap campground, I think they may have cabins too, within easy staggering distance of the pub.
Cheers
Clint
Zukin et al - I'm with those who favour converging on Whangamomona Pub.
I've done the the tunnels and Kiwi Road on the 1150 with another pal on an air head beemer. Kiwi Rd IMHO is tops.
As to dates - I'm with 'Crisis Management' - there's only so many weekends one can be away for an overnigther. In principle I'd be up for a Sat/Sun in May or June.
Good luck with the planning - cheers Aslan :scooter:

Sounds great:yes:
I would suggest a meeting point like Turangi?
That way everyone can meet a central location, maybe then we head towards Taumarunui and Whanga?
Then on the Sunday do your loop, and depending on time etc, look at the beach? Then inland toward Te Kuiti
We also need to look at a weekend?
Dates - I am ok on the 24rd & 24th June?

Taumarunui may be a better meeting point for the northlanders (that way we don't backtrack the next day...). We (I) could leave early on the Friday after work and make it to Taumarunui for the night.
Mind you, at the moment the poll shows a draw between Taranaki and Hawkes bay...
I'm keen as beans, 23/24 June sounds good to me too.
Are you piking Zukin????
Aslan, sounds like a seriously long ride on the friday huh?

Hi All - I think Wind Boy has suggested Taumaranui as a meet for folk from all points? This was my thinking also.
I'd envisaged the possibility that those coming from the South could ride the Whanganui River Rd through Jerusalem, Pipiriki and on to National Park and Taurmaranui via Raetehi reaching Whangamomona at the end of a full Saturday.
I'd favour riding from Taumaranui to Whangamonona via Mt Damper en route - not sure if this is feasible.
Day two Sunday would see us ride out to the Taranaki Coast and head North and South making our way home.
for those viewing this thread wondering whether the ride would be suitable for big dual sports like beemers - I'd certainly envisage it would be gravel and seal with no muddy single track - unlike the Makairo Track last weekend
Cheers Aslan :dodge:

Hi - and welcome - as to how we keep in touch - several of us came together following the Capital Coast Adventure and / or marque / interest clubs like BMWOR.
Zukin - is an organiser / initiator that some of us have the pleasure of meeting and riding with. See Makairo Mission post from last weekend - this drew folk from Wellington, Manawatu and Hawkes Bay.

Hi young1
Welcome to KiwiBiker
You will find the guys (and gals) that frequent the Adventure Section are damn great!!
As for your first adventure trip, there is only one condition, and that is Clint640 and myself have to test the 990 to make sure it is suitable for the road conditions
Seriously - You will be fine, most of us prefer to look at the scenery and we often stop to catch up and have a yak
There are riders of all abilities, and as an owner of a DRZ400, I am sure that you already know how to ride.
We are a pretty social bunch too
I will keep you all posted on the trip

Hi Zukin - when I mentioned Mt Damper - I meant passing through the station, although dismouting and walking to the falls could be an option depending on time. The route I travelled with Postie (know to some eh Ian) in 2005 took as beyond Whangamomona travelling en route to Taumaranui and taking a left turn onto gravel and Mt Damper and ultimatley Kiwi Road before heading out to the Coast.
Here's some local info about the tunnels in the area. Postie and me did many of these in late Dec 2005. http://www.pukeariki.com/en/stories/transport/tunneltour.asp

16/17 June is fine as long as it saves Garry a bit of dosh!
Hopefully Mr Crisis will be able to make it on the 16/17 so I have a travel buddy all the way from Jafaland on the friday...
folks - I'm relaxed about date except Queen's Birthday weekend 2/3 June.
Also, the later we leave it the greater the likelihood of the river road (Whanganui being deep slippery Papa) and extreme cold with snow on the Mountains from Raetehi to Taumaranui - selfish considerations since I don't have heated grips and I realise my comments only apply to those of us travelling from the South :dodge:
NB I've sent an email to the Hotel at Whanga inquiring about rooms for a party of up to 10 - which dates are available and tariff. Will post info when I get a reply. Cheers Aslan :scooter:

hi Young1; if your wife is keen and you're comfortable riding gravel with a pillion then I'd bring her along to share in the adventure. Key thing, each of us should feel comfortable enjoying our own ride - it's not a race and most people will look out for one another.
As to how may of us have pillions on these sorts of rides including organised adventures like the Capital Coast Adventure, IMHO they are a small percentage.
Your wife must be a good sort to endorse the purchase of a new KTM
Look forward to meeting you on the ride - cheers Aslan

Re time / where to meet I'm conscious others may have strong preferences / suggestions for those coming from points South of Whangamomona. Working on the assumption we will ride up thru Jerusalem etc then I see possible timings as follows: 7.30am Plimmerton Weigh Station - picking up folks en route like Moki at Levin, Bart and Hugh (Dannivirke men) at Bulls say - 10am at Southern Entrance to Whanganui National Park heading North out of Whanganui but before you enter the Paraparas.
Lunch Raetehi - 1pm ish. Taumaranui 2pm alongside the local Suzuki dealer as you head out of Taumaranui and the turn off to the Forgotten World Highway.
Comments - other ideas welcomed - this should be a fun ride. Cheers Aslan :scooter:
