Righto, folks. Bugger all that new-age nonsense, let's have some real online testing and results comparison.
The IQTest (http://www.iqtest.com/index.html) website has a pretty decent test up. Questions are well-designed and the test is timed.
Take the test honestly and get your anonymous result up on the poll. Let's see if KB represents a full spectrum across the bell curve.
And yes, feel free to debate the merits of IQ testing as a measurement methodology in this thread. But not until you've taken the test and contributed to the poll...

I'm pretty sure that any result you'd get while on a conference call is not at all valid.
Resit it.

I checked before posting the poll (of course) and determined that a random answer selection on that test will tend to get you a score around 80.
I don't think it's possible to be dumber than dumb chance.

Gosh , waht an intelligent lot we are. Or, maybe, those who are smugly confident of their probable scores are more likely to undertake such a test than those who suspect that their scores might be less gloatworthy.
In which case the entire excercise is rather pointless ?

Not at all.
Even if half the potential audience are scared off, the simple fact of their being scared off is an interesting basis for discussion.
I was very curious to see where the bell curve would be centered.

You'd expect that the same would happen with every one who took the test, so the mean result here could be compared with the mean result on the site.
Where it might fall down isn't people not taking the test so much, but probably more likely they don't want to post their results having seen so many scores in the mid hundreds......

Now, the bit I liked was at the end when they offered to sell you this "Intelligence Profile" thing.
So , if they're peddling the info, how relaible are their figures.
Cos one thing aboust sales, folk are much more likely to buy if you make them feel happy about themselves.
So if you set up an IQ Test site, and wanted to use it to peddle these profiles - if you tell Joe Soap he's got a below average IQ of 90, you've got naff all chance of selling him his profile. Whereas if Joe hears his IQ is 115, he's chuffed as heck, and slaps down his money for a copy of the profile to show Mrs Joe and his mates.
Which cynically makes me wonder - who says those numebrs are 'right' - even for variable and erratic values of 'right' ?
And what do those numbers mean anyway, if anything?
I think this poll represents the amount of lier's there are on kiwibiker most than anything!!!! re do the poll and make if public!!!

And what do those numbers mean anyway, if anything?
That is a question that has plagued the scientific approach to IQ testing as opposed to the marketing/employment agency IQ testing noodles for 2 or 3 decades now.
There are significant cultural skews in IQ testing, as this particular test alludes to at the start. That comment about "American" English establishes that we are already paddling in low tide polluted waters.

If you remove the aberrant values at the far end, then move the curve so the present 130-144 becomes 90-105, it's about right. Of course, then it proves nothing at all.
But I suspect that it proves less than nothing as it is.

A few years ago my boss resigned. His replacement started a few weeks after and made us do an online IQ test as a bit of an ice breaker and so he could see if we were fuckwits I suppose.
He scored 135 and was all smug. I turned my screen to face him upon completion and watched his face fall as he saw the same number as the highest break in snooker. Apparently I have a strong skew towards pure logic.
He delegated a lot of his work to me after that......
My opinion - scoring well in an IQ test means you are good at IQ tests - nothing more. What you can actually achieve in the world is a far better way of measuring all round ability.
I have an amazing wife and 2 wonderful children - this is a more accurate measure of me than any test.

Economics and ego massage.
But you would also think that they could want to sell you products to get better at the questions in the test... and as a result would give you lower scores, then when you have used their product they give you an easier test... you tell all your friends how much you improved and *zing* lots of money for them!

Me too. First and only IQ test I've ever done - true story. Possibly means a slightly lower score than I'd otherwise have got. When that program was on TV... Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a result.
Comparing the shape of the poll response bar graph from 85 to 175 on this thread with the expected normal distribution of IQ measurements:
<img src="http://iqlogy.com/iq_definition_files/image003.jpg" />
I think we can draw three conclusions:
1. The test itself was a fairly representative measurement of whatever IQ is supposed to measure,
2. Distribution amongst a sample of several dozen KB members follows the usual pattern in any population, and
3. Either:
(a) The IQTest.com website is skewing results upward by around 30 points, or
(b) KB membership is, somehow, weighted toward the upper end of the scale in the context of the larger population. You would not expect to see IQ scores coming out above 150 until you'd covered at least a thousand respondents.
I'm going with (a), here. What a disappointment. Curiously, though, I am no longer tempted to give money to IQTest.com in return for further automated ego massaging...
