View Full Version : Port Waikato to Raglan day ride.

Crisis management
2nd May 2007, 19:17
As rashly promised.......

A one day ride :scooter: from Auckland (or wherever and join in somewhere) to Port Waikato and Raglan and places surrounding on Sunday 20th May.

Meet at the Autobahn, Papakura, departing at 9.00am and return about 5ish.

I have no definite route planned yet and, as usual, am open to suggestions. The only things guaranted are as much gravel as we can find, mud, fun and semi literate conversation.

This goes ahead unless the weather :sunny: conditions are atrocious.

Some indication of numbers and any suggestions welcome! :done:

Hmmmm, sounds bit steep mate. I've deposit ed the funds anyway...

I guess there and back on the same route...? If you look in the map there are a few variations. Maybe check the tides and see if we could do a portion of the way back on the beach...? :blip:

I'll have to get a map that goes that far south....mine stops at the Bombays!

Beach sounds good, low tides about middle of the day so it could work!

Rushes off to discover whats over the bombays.........

what about us waikato riders where do we meet

Having not worked out a proper route, at this stage, I have no idea! Does that help?

My rough route at this stage goes something like, Auckland, Pukekohe, Port Waikato, Raglan, Mount Pirongia, Port waikato, Auckland. Scaled of the Globe on my desk that looks like about 350 km's....

As I said before, I'm open to suggestions, but I plan to get this finalised by the end of the next week.

As far as non auckland riders go, it's a matter of finding somewhere that suits you to meet us. I have no problem with minor diversions / alterations to include others.

Let us know where would work for you!

Hmmm, I may join you guys, but I'll stay off the beach. I've done a very similar ride in January, but went all the way to Kawhia. Would you go up Klondyke road?

It'd be great to have you along, I'm sure there will be others not interested in the beach, so no problems.
Klondyke road, don't know yet, I have to get a map with road names on it first....
My view is that we can discuss and alter the route as we go to take advantage of any local knowledge or "this looks interesting" roads we come across.

As promised earlier, I will publish a route by the end of the week!

I don't mind skipping the beach for someone else. I haven't been able to get the bike to the beach myself! It was way too soft at rimmers road in the summer last time I tried, after 10 min I bailed out of the idea and went back to the gravel....

Yeah man (Mr Crisis), when are you posting the route!!!

I did the Kaipara 200 ride including the beach section on my R80GS Basic. Got on and off alright, but I don't enjoy it all that much and the sand and salt can;t be all that good for the old girl.

Klondike road is a must do. You'd not want to miss it. I might be able to get out that day, if so will wait for you at the les Batkin reserve by the Tuakau bridge.

Sunday morning 20th May.
Meet at 9 am at BP Autobahn (just after Papakura on the southern motorway)
Depart by 9.15 on southern motorway, leave the motorway at Drury.
Via Runciman road and Harrisville road to Tuakau.
Meet others? at Tuakau bridge at 9.30ish, leaving at 10am latest.
Take the Onewhero-Tuakau road to Klondyke road and on to Port Waikato.
Take the Port Waikato-Wakaretu road along the coast continuing on to Pukerewa road, Te Akau coast road thru Kauri flat to the northen headland at Raglan Harbour.

Back inland around Raglan harbour to Raglan for lunch about 1ish.

Depending on time, possibly a loop around Te Hutewai Forest Park, towards Kawhia and back to Raglan.

Head north retracing some of these roads but taking a more inland route via Ruakiwi road, Waima Valley road, Wairamarama-Waikaretu road to Tuakau.

From Tuakau, either split up or continue on towards Auckland on the motorway. I am aiming for Auckland by 5ish

Be good to know who is coming, I don't want to wait for non-existent riders....
Send me a Pm with your mobile number, I will give you mine.

Cancellations???
I will make a call on saturday night before 8.00pm and post on this thread but will only cancel if the weather is horrible, light showers don't count!

It was a good day today and the weather held. I enjoyed meeting you guys. Next time we'll have to make an earlier start in order to get the extra riding in :-). I haven't got my data cable for my camera at home, so I can't post the two pictures I took.

Thanks to all those that turned up, I had a great time and it was good to put some faces to names!
Unfortunately, we didn't have time to do the loop south of Raglan around Mount Kario, we'll have to save that for a later date. Klondyke road lived up to it's reputation, a great scenic ride with a good surface.

Thanks to all for a good day!

I don't have a card, Dave.

Here a couple of pictures. Both taken at the top of Klondyke road ,looking south. That's where Anthrax caught up to us. He is too quick for me.
