View Full Version : Timaru - Oamaru: This Year's South Island KB get together - Otematata??
Ruralman
4th May 2007, 21:12
Last December we had a brilliant get together of South Island KB'rs at Otematata with most of us staying at the Shearers quarters on a local sheep station.
This venue had a lot going for it from hot showers, a big lounge area with fire, good cooking facilities, handy to a local pub for meals and getting grog, far enough away from otheres that our noise wouldn't bother anyone, and a bloody good local member with a little truck who helped deliver stuff. It had beds with mattresses for about 25 in bunkrooms with 2-4 beds.
Since then we've gained a lot of SI members and a few who couldn't make last years event will probably be keen to come. Theres little in the way of tent sites around the quarters from what I recall (but I will go and check this out properly) and I'd need to check this out with the Station manager as well as getting the venue again if thats where we want to go.
The main reason for this thread is to get some ideas well in advance whether we should go for the same place again and do what we can (last years lot get first rights to the beds!!), or, try some other place.
An example of another place could be Camp Armstrong about 10km up the Pig Root from Palmerston - its got most of the advantages of last years site and some great ride options around the area.
Are there any other camp options that people know about that would work.
Lets hear what you think.

And last years rally freaking well rocked, I'm in for another sesion like that.
Heres an idea I came up with... The Blackball Hilton theres a double garage for the bikes, a bar, food, lots of rooms from 2 single beds to dorms... it woud be ideal.
For those that dont know of it its 15min North of Greymouth on the coast :scooter:
Just an idea anyway.

The Formerly Blackball Hilton will get my vote for this year. Then back to Otago for the following year.
RM, There may be a chance for those of us who like to get a little bit dirty to have a smaller Rally at Dingleburn. Paulette is making enquiries. :scooter:

I am in on this one, last year was awesome, both the Sat night and ride in and out, esp the ride into Cook.
I am keen on any venue, the Hilton to stands out, one for that I have never been there, and hear that it is not a bad spot.
Doing different destinations each year sounds like a great idea. Otamata rocked :Punk: but my guess is no matter where KB'ers are, they have the ability to make any place rock.
Gee this thread could become mighty long by the time this happens, especially if we are looking Dec 07'ish

Well the Otematata site suits me - no public to scare (or interfere), just KBers:yes:
BUT I'll go with where the majority want to - as long as we can party in peace..

Motorcycle friends are at a rally at Mt Somers Motorcamp this weekend so I will check that out with them. Could be OK too!

Just reading through all the replies so far and yep I reckon anywhere we meet we'll make sure we have a great time.
Keep us posted on that Dingleburn thing Jantar (I've gone blank on where that is and I should know??).
Given Jen's comments about the distance maybe we should consider that the location has to be one days ride from any point in the South Island (and yes I'm well aware "one days ride" distances vary a lot between riders).
This sort of points to mid Canterbury options - Mt Somers has been mentioned, maybe Lake Coleridge?? Whats up there in the way of options and facilities (might need a support vehicle taking in food, booze etc (and equipped with a good stereo)
I've heard a lot about the Blackball Hilton and its definitely on my list of places to go but it would be a bloody long haul home from there on a Sunday with a hangover for those of us in the Dunedin South category. We could certainly get there in good time on the Sat OK with a bit of travel on Friday night - its the run home thats the problem.
For those that asked and didn't read the first post - December was the time of the last one (weekend of the 12th I think)
So what are the best mid Canterbury options??
Well the Otematata site suits me - no public to scare (or interfere), just KBers:yes:

My goodness Bruce, you are obviously keen. I have been getting itchy about getting another SI KB rally on the go but December is 7months away. Anyhoo, never too soon.
With the talk about distance to travel, what about alternating between bottom middle one year and top middle the next so that those at the more extreme ends don't have so much of a marathon every year and so that the bunch of softies in Chch at least have to spend more than an hour to get there. Therefore, I would go for somewhere in a strip from kinda Kaikoura to Greymouth for this year.
Secondly, I have been thinking about getting a badge made up for these events. Was going to check out with Spank today about the possibility of using the KB logo (if he turns up at the LHog!!!). Does anyone know good places to get badges made? Talked to the guys at the Sundowner last week and they said something about Steam .... But I couldn't find anything in the yeller pages. Worth persuing?

Great idea Alan.. HEY.. :gob: I KNOW a great place.. "The Staging Post" near Parnassus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (about 40ks south of Kaikoura!) We have had several of our Plains Club doo's there & a wedding!!! it's awesome.. several cabins, bunkrooms, big lounge area, 2 kitchens with all the gear, a few caravans, oodles of tent space, swimming pool, peacocks running round!!! spa pool outside with fairy lights in the trees above.. it would be PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whadda ya reckon guys??????????? I could make some enquiries for us!!!! let me know!!
Talked to the guys at the Sundowner last week and they said something about Steam .... But I couldn't find anything in the yeller pages
Steam Themes in Rangiora Alan!! they do all our clubs badges!!
Jen
The biggest things to consider are facilities, either somewhere with all the requirements (though majority of these locations mean having to share with general public) or a location/facility that has the bare requirements (which in turn means having to BYO items).
Either way a place that had the character & appeal of Otematata is preferable just for the fact of a totally relaxed atmosphere & location

I am well under way with a badge commemorating the "1st KB South Island Rally" for the participants of Otematata December 2006. The Art work is finished (Mt Cook photo with inlaid wording) made by same badge maker as Brass monkey Badge. I will not be using the KB Logo. Costs will be $10.00 by sending a Stamped self addressed envelope to Xknuts / Chris Miller, P O Box 5296, Dunedin.
I believe 23 people participated so I will run 25. But I may be wrong???, photographic evidence is good for proof. I know some of you did not make the official photo on the Mt Cook Road )( Kaz?, Jim?? Toddy?)

WEll I'd rather see something around the middle - mainly because of the Sunday ride home issue, and because everyone can go.
If you ChCh fellas are too close then FFS take a bloody detour via the West Coast to get there or something!

Yes, the Sunday ride home issue does need to be considered. Last year Otematata - Mt Cook - Clyde - Dunedin was 580 km, so lets find a venue within 600 km of everyone. :scooter:
Ummm. I think all the venues so far suggested would be within that distance. :innocent:

I think there are plenty of facilities at Coleridge Power Station village.
Since NZED was disestablished corporatised and broken up all of the village facilities are now under private management and last I had anything to do with it they were looking good!
Send a scouting party out to find out whats there now. Should be a good ride out from Christchurch. (or Rakaia Bill) Cheers John.

There's a few facilities at the Coleridge Power Station village, then there's Lake Coleridge Station which has facilities at either end of the lake  though to get to it there's 6km of heavy shingle rd to the main homestead and then another 20km of shingle up to the top of the lake. Or Ryton Station roughly halfway up the lake.
Here, we could go all ritzy (http://www.lakecoleridgenz.info/index.cfm/results/Action/Service/RealmID/1/CategoryID/4/ServiceID/14) or cheap (http://www.lakecoleridgenz.info/index.cfm/results/Action/Service/RealmID/1/CategoryID/21/ServiceID/13) well someone would have to ask some questions I guess. Heres the site (http://www.lakecoleridgenz.info/index.cfm) for perusing.
You can shove terrace downs  that's unless your shouting
Sealed road in to Coleridge Power Station all the rest are gravel! Sprot bikes?? John.
Lake Lyndon Rd is regularly graded & hides plenty of axle bending ruts for 4x4s so it'd be a careful journey on a roadbike
Looking at places like Terrace Downs is detracting from the atmosphere of a weekend were we can enjoy ourselves without worrying to much about what we get up to
Places like Otematata have all the amenities we require etc plus the appeal of of unique areas that general public don't get to see.
As this is going to be an annual event, what the possibility that each year around this time a thread such as this gauges numbers that will be attending, appoints two KBers to pick a location (that could remain a mystery until the time & has to be different from the previous year) that is set within certain specifications, and allows the chosen two time to pick the spot & do the necessary arranging and the attendees time to plan & prepare for the weekend away.

Thanks Speedy, where ya been girl, lying low???
Chris, you're the man, or is it just great minds...:second: As you are already onto this, how about looking at doing it for this year's also. I am in for a badge for last year.
I think there were about 23 at last years.
Thanks Silo, yeah, great minds etc!
Of Course I will, And the reason I'm not using KB Logo is that I can utilise a pictorial photo of the chosen site/local feature of the area we choose each year. Instead of like rallys where they just change the badge colour each year, we will have a background picture and date to remember each yearly event.

Another little thought, Dansey Pass Camping ground and motor camp!
There are cabins and camping spots, we used to go there years ago with the kids and fosic for gold etc.(obviously I never found the Klondike)
Most of you must have been past it at sometime it's on the North Otago side of the pass, sealed all the way! Cheers John.

That is a great spot in there and it would work well for a get together. The only issue its a long way for those up the North end of the Island (is there anyone North of Rangiora planning on coming??:innocent: that doesn't just happen to ride a four cylinder 400cc cruise missile?). It would be great for those of us between Rangiora and Balclutha and the Hinterlands

Wouldn't need to be solo - its all sealed from the North side as far as the camping ground, and then changes to gravel soon after that for the ride through the pass and to the pub at the other side and all the way out to the Pig Root-Maniototo highway.

So you say that a ride to the monkey it is not to bad even two up on more of a road bike... the grizzz like?
No - I was suggesting you'd have no trouble riding as far as the camping ground. As for the rest of it well it depends on your gravel riding confidence - to the Brass I'd say probably not 2-up unless you were on some larger Adventure bike or something with bigger front wheels. Actually some cruisers aren't too bad on gravel - I think XKNuts has taken the big custard square through the Danseys but most Harley riders wouldn't consider it (too hard on the chrome!)
Some sections of it get quite corrugated, others as you climb up to the pass itself are just rocky and rough and some of the lower sections can have heavy shingle, especially if recently graded.
Its also getting quite high and I've seen ice around the top sections at times you wouldn't be worried about ice lower down.
If we had our Dec KB rally at the camping ground I'd ride over the Pass from this end and check it out - you could then take a day ride to the top or carry on and do a larger circuit if the road was OK. If you take your time you'll get there OK on any bike.
What I was thinking was the possibility of each year with 2 Kbers selected to choose the venue that there'd be the chance that eventually there would be a four corners type deal with locations
eg: 1 year = south, 2nd year = west, 3rd year = north, 4th year = east
and run it on a 4year rotation
Understandably not everyone would be able to attend each event but with enough advanced planning the majority would be able to. And with an alternating area each year it would include members from all corners of the island and possibly some from over the ditch:yes:
Suppose I'm spoilt in a way that location wise I'm central to going any direction North,South,West. though going east I've only got 20kms then next stop is Chile:shutup:

All manor of bikes go across the Dansey Pass, I have seen plenty of Harley Davidsons, two up and even in the snow!
It's not necessarily an easy (or the wisest) choice but hey, I have had plenty of sticky moments even on a trail bike and sports bike whizzing past quite unconcerned!
Shit happens if you get things wrong but if you don't try it, how would you ever know.

A poll - yes we're thinking alike. I would like to see some pics of that Staverley scout camp first, and also go to our original site and see if there is a tenting option handy enough to the bunkrooms. I have a trip to Geraldine to do some time in the next 2 weeks and was planning on going up via Oldrider and having a look at the site while there and talking to the manager again.
So yep a poll is a good idea but we've got plenty of time and I'd like to wait till we've done this (and by then I might have also worked out how to put up a poll on this thread - feel free to PM me with instructions Jantar)

We have 5 standard cabins that sleep 6 = 30
1 standard cabin with a double bed and 2 bunks (4)
2 ensuite cabins with dble bed & 1 set of bunks (8)
we also have 4 caravans that sleep from 2 to 4 people.
The usual price is $42 for 2 in a standard cabin & $14 each extra

You can have an average of 5 singles in each of the standard cabins beds. If people want the ensuite just because they do not want to share with other people ( which often happens ) they pay the full rate
We have the choice of 2 rooms for a big group like yours for your social gathering..

Don't know if I like the idea of Mt Somers - too close. Sure we can take the long way there and back but I can't be arsed with that. The idea put forward by Dangerous is etter (Blackball Hilton) or somewhere on the West Coast. I think we'd be better off trying to get a handle on numbers first before worrying about where to have it. Who knows; the numbers we end up with could mean staying at Otematata.

For those of us who have to travel from either ends of the Island.. it is a LONG way.. <_< So if you 'can't be arsed' going via the long route so as to get a decent ride in.. then tough! :violin: The idea of the central venue, is to cater for 'everybody'. :Punk:

Well said that man, oops, woooooman, MrS consider yourself :spanking: But don't go and :weep: about it, just plan a devious ride.
There was a lot to like about Otematata though......................

A ride from Nelson to the proposed venue in Kaikoura would be excellent. Regrettably i don't still live there (owned my first 6 bikes there!). Have to aim for somewhere central as just can't do the god-awful Dn to ChCh stretch. Transit are currently removing the last 3 corners i believe!

DN to Kaikoura is a full day travel breaks and fuel stops etc... (and the gawd awefull canterbury plans) get there on the saturday evening and it time to be coming home again. its a long haul for those further south that may want to go... Not all of us can just take time off work when ever we want... heck I am saying I am in at present but may not be able to go due to work committments at that time of year... (let alone take an extra day off.)
Some where central means most people can get there in for or 5 hours travel, no matter where you live

Hey guys, we are only sorting out where to go THIS year not for the duration. Mt Somers/Kaikoura/Blackball/Otematata are all good suggestions.
Some years it will be close, some far away. For me I don't care where it is so long as the site is appropriate. It is also good that it is not at either extreme of the Island to make it possible for any who want to come - even if it means taking an extra day off rather than trying to fit it into Friday night to Sunday night.
Once it looks like enough possible sites have been suggested - how about a poll and we go with the majority - provided all "no shows" are ignored. This might sound sensible and I disavow all connection to it.

I agree, look how quickly it came around last year!
Decision time, we only need "one" venue each year. John.

Well said Silage.. I agree!!! :2thumbsup Within 3/4 of either end of the Island makes it feasible for anyone to organise to get there! It's not one extreme end of the Island, or the other! Everyone will have some little 'irk' with whatever destination is chosen.. ie: job, long boring straight roads, kids.. etcetc.. it boils down to.. "if ya wanna be there, you WILL find a way to organise yourself to BE there"!!! :Punk: Hell, it's a HUGE undertaking for me to get there.. organising babysitters for 2 kids for 3-4 days, & no money to spare.. but I'll be there come hell or high water!!! To me, this is more about "the gathering of US"..:grouphug: than "the ride to get there" !!! :scooter: So lets decide on a venue, that is within reason for everyone!

Isn't debating fun. (Just to play the Devils advocate) If ALL roads to and from the venue were straight one may as well take the the train (assuming you could find one). Seriously though with time anything is do-able. Full marks to those making the effort to find a venue

Being the small company we are... we close the doors over Xmas period which means we can't take leave during the year... if it was over this period then for me there would be no issue what so ever.
All I am saying is having it in central SI district makes more sense, if we are wanting more KBers to come long, and slowly grow it over then years to come.

So should we have a poll as to whether we should decide the site with a poll or .....
The following sites have been suggested:
Otematata
Kaikoura (Staging Post ie Hurunui region)
Blackball
Mt Somers
Southern west coast
Are there any more suggestions cos I don't think polls can be edited once begun. And if/when a poll is posted, it might be good to reveal voters names so those NI intruders can be weeded out. All are welcome to come of course (feel the love).
Otherwise we could just go with the first person to suggest an appropriate site and confirm that it is available.
Any problems with 8 December?
