View Full Version : Broke my Volty

Got rear-ended by a car this morning when I stopped for a stop sign. Poor wee Volty is at Colemans waiting for insurance to get sorted.
The rear guard is folded completely under and pressing against the tyre, rear light broken, both left indicators broken, clutch lever broken etc.
I've got bruised ribs & upper arm and a bruised bum. Ouch! Also generally stiff & sore all over. (Got checked out at the A&E so I know I don't have any neck, back or other hidden unjuries.)
Poor Volty. Poor me.
PS: Changed the title of this thread from "Broke my Volty" to "Blonde in a BMW broke my Volty" just to feed your stereotyping urges. Go on... see if you can resist...:innocent:
Grrr ... I might even have to go against my better judgement and have a rant ... Stupid Cage Drivers!
Once upon a time, going through and stop soign and running a red light were automatic license suspension events. Now that they're not, you have people doing what happened to you .... looking up the road to see if they can slip through.

Awwwwww poor wee volty :scooter:
Glad to hear that you are ok......
Good on you for going to get yourself checked out at A & E.
Good luck with your insurance company.
Let us know how you get on with them over your bike.
Since you got hit from behind, the other party is at fault, so they should be paying out to your insurance company.
Were police involved?
Hope they get charged.

Yeah, I think I might feel like a bit of a rant when I've finished feeling sad.

Yep, from my perspective it's pretty clear who was at fault. I was stationary for goodness' sake! And she simply didn't stop. While I was waiting on the side of the road for the Colemans truck I watched people going through the intersection. 99% of them didn't stop, lots didn't even slow down and some didn't slow down and didn't even look to their right before pulling out!! :gob: Astounding.

The car driver says she's fully insured and I have all her details so hopefully it will all go smoothly but you never know with these things. I just want my Volty back!
Stink !!! What a pain in the arse...
Hope you feel better soon.

Bummer Klingon, sorry to hear that. Hope you and Volty are back on the road soon.
I reckon car vs. bike through negligence like this should be assault with a deadly weapon by default...
:( Sad to hear about that. Hope you get better soon and arent too sore, and can get back on your bike soon!

I get paranoid when I'm stopped and watch cagers in my mirrors - get ready to make a bolt for my escape hole and breath a sigh of relief when they stop! :eek5:
Hope you get back on two wheels of freedom soon!

Bugger matey. Sad to hear this has happened to you!! Hope you and the wee volty heal up quick. Get physio if you need too for the aches. You will probably go through heaps of emotions in the next few days - so rant away. Thinking of you lots! Take care.

Thanks gijoe. I was wondering (while I sat on the footpath waiting for the recovery truck) if there was anything I could have done to avoid this situation. At this particular intersection (Picton St & Hepburn St, Freemans Bay) it's hard to see to your right - which I suppose is why it's a stop rather than a give way. To get a clear view, you have to stop.
If I had seen this car in my mirror and saw that she wasn't stopping, and if I hadn't had time to check to my right that the way was clear, I still wouldn't have bolted out into the intersection to avoid being hit from behind. I would prefer to have the situation happen as it did than to go ahead without checking and get T-boned by a car coming down the hill from my right.
I go this way every day on my commute and this intersection is always risky. I've tried various experiments to see what's best for me. I'm turning left there, so I tried pulling to the far left of my lane, but left-turning traffic zooms through the stop sign and turns across in front of me, cutting me off. Also drivers that are looking over their right shoulders are less likely to see me if I'm on their left front corner. So I made the decision to hold my ground and stay in the centre of the lane.
I also made a conscious decision to STOP at this stop sign every time - I tried 'going with the flow' and treating it like a give way (like most others do) but I felt that wasn't safe and it put me at greater risk.
So I made my choices and now I have to live with the consequences. :(
When Volty gets better I think I'll find a new route to work.

The reason it felt unsafe to flow through is purely because it ISN'T... You made the right choice to stop.. That is safe riding/driving... It doesn't say "stop" for no reason... Sadly other people have made the wrong choice...
Right now your going through the "kick myself" stage.. "what if i hadn't done this.." "what if I had done that" You'll be playing through your mind what you could have done differently, that could have ended in a better out come.. Believe me.. I should know I've been there..
All I can say to you is to stop getting the damn well boot in.. You followed the rules... Good on you.. There was nothing that YOU did wrong....

Aww man! That sucks! Poor Volty, I'll have to give you a ride on mine while yours is out of action. Glad that you're alright though, and it sounds like you'll have no trouble getting the bike fixed.
There was nothing that YOU did wrong....
Agreed.
However, defensive driving courses suggest tapping the brakes in this situation so that your brake lights flash and call attention to your presence. This is a technique I use often when going home from work in the cage because in 2 places I have to join queues which can extend to blind bends, both cases in 100 km areas.
Even this is no use though where the intersection slopes and you need your brakes simply to stay stationary.

I brought a Craft RX6 in matt black. Major increase in space given to me by cars now. Fully recommend the black darth vader helmet with the black visor... nobody likes to think their car is going to get kicked in, so they avoid you like the plague  Works best in conjunction with a race pipe ;)

Thanks all for your support. Now (24 hours later) I've started to feel a little emotionally fragile and it's always nice to get some virtual hugs from fellow bikers :) (They're also gentler on the ribs than real hugs! OW!)

Yeah I might have to come over and give your bike a little pat because I'm missing my Volty already! I wonder if Colemans will let me visit my Volty and take her special blankie? LOL (I'm having you on... I'm not really THAT soppy about my bike. Just almost.)

That's the case with this intersection. It's on a hill so I needed my brake to stop me rolling away! But I will keep that technique in mind in the future. By the way, the tail light and the brake light were both working and the left indicator was flashing at the time!

Shopping list for Volty: Race pipes, klaxon horn, Xmas tree lights.
Shopping list for me: Helmet with nasty-looking face painted on the back. Or Hells Angel to ride pillion. :D

Haha, I think it'll need a bit of a pat now too, cos I just dropped it coming up my drive...:o I took the turn too quickly and the front wheel slipped out on some dirt, first time I've fallen off and hopefully the last. It's alright though.. lucky, or else there might have been two broken voltys!

If I knew how to change the title I would chage it to "Blonde in a Beemer broke my Volty!" Since people around here seem to like stereotyping so much, that will really set their typing-fingers tingling!

I went to Colemans today to get some glove rain-proofing stuff and there was this poor volty outside with its rear guard folded under.
Doesn't look too bad.

OOOOOH yay for not looking too bad! I have nothing to guage "too bad" against so I'm glad to get an independent opinion. Of course it looks horrible to me because it went from smooth shiney chrome to all buckled and messed up :( I'm just hoping any damage is confined to the visible bits, rather than some secret nasties lurking underneath.
Next time you go, please give her a pat and tell her I'm thinking of her! :sunny:

hmmmmm... visualising me walking past, does the suspicious head swivel thing to make sure no-one is watching, then pats volty and talks to it. Van turns up, men in white coats hop out and cart me off!
I actually passed you yesterday morning in the car - I saw you and the bike and thought you were a local that had parked your Volty there over night and were preparing to go to work - thought "your Volty would last better kept in a garage".
Must have been some time after the impact as there was no car, you had no helmet on and I think you were organising your stuff at the time. If I'd realised you'd had a ding I'd have stopped (I'd just dropped off the trailer we hired for Taupo Trackday)

Oh what a shame you didn't realise what had happened. I could have done with some company while I waited for the truck to arrive. I actually phoned Mack the Knife and he chatted to me and dispensed sympathy and advice (THANKS MACK!)
I've just been talking to the insurance assessor and it looks like Volty is a write-off. :crybaby: Not because the frame's bent (he hasn't assessed that yet) but because there's so much damage to so many bits that he says it's uneconomical to repair. What a blow. I think I'll start another thread because there's quite a story behind it.

WHAT - the black volty at Colemans, chromed rear guard touching the rear tyre, tail light, clutch lever, indicator = write off????
Are there 2 dinged Voltys at Colemans?

I KNOW!!! Incredible. There is just one black Volty at Colemans and it's mine. Apparently Volty indicators and clutch levers must cost about $500 each. :bye: Bye bye Volty
That sucks!!!! You're Volty in your profile pics looks really nice too! What a shame :(
Yeah, it's a bit of a shock. One minute you're riding along at a sedate pace (remember I was going TO work lol) on a bright, sunny beautiful morning. The next minute you're lying on the ground with a Volty on your foot. And then they're telling you it's terminal! (For the Volty, not me of course.) :shit:
Anyway I'm looking into buying the "wreck" (I have trouble using that word for a bike that has a bent guard and a couple of broken indicators) and fixing it up myself. I'll get Colemans to do any complicated stuff (ummm... did I mention that the shocks and bars are bent?)
Then Mack the Knife and I will create the world's first BIONIC VOLTY! :Punk:
