DATE COULD CHANGE.
DATE HAS CHANGED TO SUNDAY!!!!!
Weather looks good so should be sorted now.

If it is raining or weather looks like crap then ride will be postponed to a more suitable time.

With all the reports of the southern cross coming on I am missing the long rides so here is a plan to spend all day on the bikes.

layout is section km/total km

Plan is to leave early in the morning. (read 6am)

Head out through halcombe to wanganui
85km

then round surf highway to Opunake

135km
Fuel stop in opunake which is about 220km

awakino /8 mile.
213km/444km

Will have to drop in to Te kuiti for fuel which will put the fuel stop at 224km. Could stop for a bite to eat.

then cut back to 8 mile down to Taumararunui and on to Turangi
147km/602km
Another Fuel stop in Turangi.

desert road then back to Raetihi
102km/704km

para paras to wanganui
81km/785km
Last fuel stop.

home
85km/870km

Speak up if you see problems with the plan. This ride will be below licence losing speeds and is for those who enjoy being on the bike and enjoying the ride. In saying that we will not be riding round at 80k/hr.

Expect to average 90km/hr which will put us just under 10 hours on the bikes. with fuel and smoke stops I would expect to be out for 12 hours.

Long distance riding is somethign I enjoy. It offers different challenges to simply going fast or wandering. Really looking forward to this one but must admit that I am not surprised you are passing this one up. It IS a long ride and probably feel twice as long on a smaller bike.

No way you're going to average 90kmh. That would require and open road average speed of about 120kmh. 75-80 will be really good going.

cowboyz
7th May 2007, 21:18
yep. 120ish open road. 130 on the quiet roads. I have been carrying a GPS on my bike for the past 50 odd thousand k and usually average out around 90 over a ride. Last 2 long runs we have done we averaged 92.4km/hr and 90.7km/hr. Its not about doing 200k/hr flat stick. It is about controlled comfortable pace and not slowing down to go round corners.

This is not being promoted as a newbie ride. I also do not want to discourage anyone from coming who wants to but I hope I have represented the ride as it will run.

Anyone who has ridden with the Ashhurst boys will tell you that we are not about break neck speeds so the comment of averaging 90k was in case someone mistook this ride for a 870km Grand Prix.

You do make a valid point however where when I say average 90k/hr I mean average. Not riding open road at 90k and town at 50k.

now I have typed all that, the pace on the day will be decided by the group. No one will be left behind (see sig)

(except the honda riders but they expect to be)

HEY!! :nono:

i could be in, not sure yet about the date (but would be nice to celebrate my birthday with a huuuge ride somewhere!!)

hey any of you lot ever have clutch arm issues?? i find that after i hit about the 200-300km mark, the tendons in my clutch arm/hand are getting really sore, i cant imagine what they'd be like on a ride that length! ya reckon it just needs to get a bit more used to it?

one possibility is; the clutch lever on the viffer is half gone, ie: been dropped and busted and now there's only enough for 2 finger use, altho i generally only ever use 2 fingers for both clutch and brake....

could be the fact that the 400 requires a lot more gear changes than the bigger cc's too....

dodgy lazy 900 riders:bleh:

cowboyz
7th May 2007, 22:35
you better come before you get old......

clutch arm issues.. yeah. I havent had the 9 for that long and I remember those.. just harden up...

seriously.. even on the 6 I found my tendons in my left hand hurting after a while. I just gave up using the clutch for a while till I got over it.

Come along. You will find that there are enough highway sections of the ride where you dont need to change gear so often.

dogsnbikes
7th May 2007, 22:50
Isnt the Gas station In opunaki at RD1 will have to confirm if open on saturday's but there is one 20k's before which should be open and we should be able to get gas at PIOPIO just b4 eight mile if they still have the gas station

yeah...the more i thought about it, i realised the ride we did at easter down masterton way, my arm was ok, but the other two rides recently, it got bloody sore. i think its just the tighter the road and the more hills to contend with, the more gear changes im making, so it gets a real workout, but when its more open, no worries

alright then, im in....just hope the little viffer can handle it!!

I hear ya with the sore arm Yod but for me its the throttle arm that got damn sore .. throttle does not twist that easily & after the last big ride it ached for several days afterwards ..

clutch is no probs ..

but yeah this might be a boyz ride ... us girls can disappear down the road to a cafe/pub or 10 (pub crawl) :innocent:

I have a hankering to do the back roads again u4ea & we passed some nice country pubs if i remember correctly ...

hey how many kms can your GPS hold before it starts recording over the start of the track again? or do you not bother with the tracks themselves?

mine seems to fill up at about 300km, then i start losing data...

Bloody hell lad. We havent even left yet and you have already added 40km to the trip! No wonder we are getting a reputation.

My figures were taken out of my map book at home. (yes I do have one I just dont carry it for the adventure) Doesn't take much to be out for it to throw it off by 5%. Just hope I have worked out the fuel stops alright cause that meanstreak is damn heavy to be pushing along.

i think google probably adds a bit extra for actually going to the middle of each town in the list when it's unlikely we'll have to do that everywhere anyway

altho, i have to add another 20km to get to ashhurst and back as well!! i vote we meet at the Gull, corner of Railway Rd and Tremaine (just to annoy cowboyz of course)

we could make that another weekend ride mate....looks like a doozer of a road too, just been noseying on google maps

could head out route 54, then up no 1 to taihape, then head across the ranges, back down route 50 and home from there, just shy of 400kms (if we start in ashhurst)

check it out here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=ashhurst+new+zealand&daddr=feilding+new+zealand+to%3Ahalcombe,+Manawatu-Wanganui+New+Zealand+to%3Abulls+to%3Awanganui+to%3 Ahawera+to%3Aopunake+to%3ANew+Plymouth,+Taranaki,+ New+Zealand+to%3Aawakino+to%3Ate+kuiti+to%3Ataumar unui+to%3ANational+Park,+Manawatu-Wanganui,+New+Zealand+to%3Aturangi+to%3AWaiouru,+M anawatu-Wanganui,+New+Zealand+to%3Araetihi+to%3Awanganui+t o%3Abulls+to%3Ahalcombe+to%3Afeilding+to%3Aashhurs t&mrcr=18&sll=-40.266166,175.628128&sspn=0.089333,0.159645&ie=UTF8&om=1&ll=-39.35129,175.858154&spn=2.89684,5.108643&z=8)

we could make that another weekend ride mate....looks like a doozer of a road too, Be warned there's 23 odd kms of gravel, but the sealed bits make up for it. If you get a good day (have done it mid-winter with snow on the ranges at times) it's deffinately worth the effort. If there's been a bit of rain it can get iffy in one particular valley. A mate and I did it this time last year on our GBs. There's a nice loop road that by-passes Managaweka coming out closer to Taihapi too. The bit of road cowbowz parked the gsx on the fence.

may pay to gas up in hawera at shell on main road into hawera,as if the way you ride you may end up in opunake at say 8.15 or so(6.15 am start, wangavegas say 7.00 ish, hawera 7.45 ish, opke just after 8.00ish)not sure what time rd1 open in opunake if they do on saturday morning.also check out taranaki farmers (opunake branch)as they have fuel via self pump if i'm not mistaken.i'd stop in hawera to make sure(open 24/7). if you filled in hawera you could maybe stop in urenui(20km north n.p) for gas, then get to piopio easily.may join in if not working and go from hawera to n.p with you.hope this helps as pain in ass if petrol n/a on weekends.

may pay to gas up in hawera at shell on main road into hawera,as if the way you ride you may end up in opunake at say 8.15 or so(6.15 am start, wangavegas say 7.00 ish, hawera 7.45 ish, opke just after 8.00ish)not sure what time rd1 open in opunake if they do on saturday morning.also check out taranaki farmers (opunake branch)as they have fuel via self pump if i'm not mistaken.i'd stop in hawera to make sure(open 24/7). if you filled in hawera you could maybe stop in urenui(20km north n.p) for gas, then get to piopio easily.may join in if not working and go from hawera to n.p with you.hope this helps as pain in ass if petrol n/a on weekends.

Plan is in the making. Welcome to join up for the ride or part thereof. More the merrier. (give me someone else to blame for getting lost.)

Hi folks:yes: Sorry I've been a bit slow on the uptake on this thread. I'm still deciding if I'm up for it. Sounds like a bloody good day though. I was a little concerned about my throttle cable, which should be going in in the next few days. Plus, I'm getting a new rear tyre on Friday and got a new battery today, so I'm slowly getting the bike ready for winter.

PLUS, I now have my other bike back! If you thought 1 gixxer looked sexy in the garage, christ, it's sheer bloody heaven in there with 2!

I was lucky enough to have a few hours to blast out the cobwebs on it today, and she's just as good as I remember - which is bloody good.

Still a few little things to remedy, but soon I can pick which one to take out. One can never have too many bikes eh?

well i couldnt make cowboyz big day, but i made up for it by taking the viffer to Napier on Saturday, back on Sunday

headed out to ashhurst, went past about 30 bears heading south into palmy, filled up at ashhurst, then out through the gorge. as i came through woodville, nine harleys (and maybe a brit bike or two) pulled out in front of me, so i tagged on the back and we're off!!

they set a good pace (125-140) and weren't shy about passing anything anywhere but not a problem for the viffer to stay in touch, nice weather for a ride so I was having a ball at the back....

hit dannevagas and they headed through the main drag (fuck that!) and i went through the bypass...came out about 300m ahead and that was that, see ya....

stopped at the highway 50 turnoff for a smoke....mr plod came past heading south as i was on the side of the road, muahahaha, perfect timing!!!
jumped back on and carried on north - set a ripping pace along the southern half of 50, such an easy ride and got through to Taradale in about 40 mins

next day, i headed south at about 3:15...wanted to make sure i got home before the sun disaappeared entirely.
forgot to fill up as i left and only remembered when i hit maraekakaho, DOH! asked a nice chap on the side of the road how far to the nearest troleum station, he said flaxmere to the north and probably dannevirke to the south. Hmmmm....probably would have had enough to make it to dannevages but wasn't really willing to risk it, so back i went to flaxmere.

Finally got away from flaxmere about 4:15 - knew i was gonna get a bit chilly from woodville on, but at least i wasn't going to be pushing the bike down the side of the road anywhere!!
pretty uneventful trip back, got home around 5:45, a bit cold, but a hefty bourbon soon fixed that!

spotted a few riders on highway 50 in both directions, any kbers out there see a red vfr on their travels? it was probably me...

yep...makes sense...i did the proprtional thing as best i could so will probably take the rest with me if we get out on the weekend and add it as we go...

on a (possibly) happy note: my helmet left LA ta 3pm Sunday afternoon, arrived in NZ at 10:31am this morning (3 days to get here?!!?) and cleared customs at 2:37pm this afternoon, so HOPEFULLY it will get to me by friday! no sign of the wifes new one and hers left before mine as far as i can tell.....who knows...

I also now have mirrors on the viffer, they're decent units, solid and should be quite effective, but it's a bit questionable if they're actually factory units!! mounting isn't exactly what i'd call a "factory fit" !! ahwell, ya live and learn....

Yes, I hope the helmets arrive soon. It's frustrating having to wait for new things, especially when you know they're so close lol. But all the better when they arrive. And a long ride will wear it in nicely!

I may google these additives and see what they have to say. The label on mine says use every 5000 km or as required. May be interesting.

Good to hear the mirrors are on tho!

On a general note, my max range is about 200 km, and looking at some of those distances I may have to stop more often for fuel. The old girl/s were built for speed, not distance

Yod- you are wearing the helmet everywhere you go till the ride arent you? :)

quite possibly....will probably take the bike for a spin after work to run in the fuel additive and i also wanna see what the helmet is like for noise etc but it does need to be worn in a bit before taking off on a farkin enormous ride

might even sleep in it too...err...watch out honey!!

there's no way it could be worse than my old one for noise - that thing was shocking - i've been using ear plugs lately and thats made a HUUGE improvement - hopefully i wont need them with this one, it certainly looks like it seals below the ear pretty well....we shall see

i've got a slight miss at higher revs and 86 suggested some fuel cleany type stuff might help - may as well try it, gotta be cheaper than rippin it to bits!! i've had the plugs out and they were pretty messy so a clean out is probably a good thing, for the carbs and valves too

fingers crossed...

Hey Yod, very nice helmet mate!

Yep, I am definitely convinced those additives do make a difference, especially after I checked the website. I know it's their own hype, but it does make sense, and any residue would be quickly blown through the exhaust system I'd say. Without specialist knowledge I guess it comes down to trust in the product in the end. It does say that any engine or fuel treatment is best used around town as it gives the additive time to dissolve any deposits of carbon and fuel gum.

http://www.nulon.com.au/products.php?productId=TFSC

I find using ear plugs with my new helmet is great, you can really 'feel' the environment you know.

Shame you guys can't make this trip, it will be big and getting out of bed on Monday won't be fun but, next time eh:rockon:

crikey...i disappear for a few hours and the place goes to the dogs....

so anyway, the helmet:

looks goooood, cuts the air very nicely, very comfy, good fit and im finding the flip face handier than i thought i would (i didnt actually buy it for the flip face, i just liked Nolans and the other features this one had)

wind noise? better but ill probably still use the ear plugs on longer rides, not as good as i'd hoped....and it is a little heavy compared to other helmets, i think the race version shoeis and arais are about 12-1300gm? my old one is about 1500, this is more like 1700 - i guess ill get a strong neck

the best feature? the pinlock visor antifog thingy: you CANT fog this thing up - at slow speed in the cold (like 30 minutes ago), visor down, vents closed and breathing directly onto it and it just refuses to fog up. and i dont mean it fogs a little and goes away really quickly, it just doesnt fog up at all - very impressive.

I reckon!

I'm really looking forward to the ride, I'm considering a sickie on Monday as well. Probably won't though lol.

Yod, your helmet looks and sounds great!!! The flip chin piece will be really useful I'd say.

And the additive seems to have worked really well - on both bikes. I had a backfire developing on my newer one, and after only 40 km or so it has stopped and is running really smoothly now! So it could have been a sticking inlet valve maybe. Or a number of things.

These additives must act as a detergent and dissolve deposits, I only hope they completely dissolve them and then pass them out through the exhaust as vapour and not small solids.

Seeing as though both the bottle and the website state they are "safe" then I would say they are.

I also got some Nulon Silicone spray for general lubrication and protection as well. I was a bit dubious about the brand, not knowing it, but this spray seems really good, nice and 'waxy' and doesn't leave any obvious residue. Which will be important with winter getting more and more obvious.

I can also highly recommend the Motoline chain lube as well. I got it from AFC and it has been great with very minimal fling. And has lasted very well. It's very similar in appearance to the wax film that new chains are coated with at purchase, in fact, it's probably exactly the same substance, which has to be good.

As for leisure time, hmmm it's one weekend at a time right now, tho sounds like Phantom and Meanie have cunning plans:rockon:

yup...looking forward to this one, glad i've got a no fog helmet for a 6am winter start too!!

i did about 50km last night to try and run some of the additive through the engine, then topped up with about 8 litres of fuel and put a little more of that additive in when i got home

hard to say if there was any improvement in such a short time but it seemed to climb to redline a bit easier, but still the odd little flatspot

will see on sunday i guess

yeah its more of a case of the bike being a haggard old heap (21 yrs old!) that needs a bit of encouragement to loosen up the boogers first i think....its had a few pretty decent thrashes between 2-400km lately but still getting flatspots (at inconvenient times too!) so we thought this stuff might be a help

since i probably wont upgrade for a few months now i'm considering ripping the engine apart after this ride and seeing if there's anything i can do to tidy her up - will be looking for assistance/encouragement/advice from you lot!! Thanks for the tender care Bonez- its at Phils and apparently theres problems. Japan dont make a muffler anymore, so if I'm lucky it'll be the full titanium race kit for me :D
Just snapped both brake levers off and a few scratches here and there. Managed to throw myself under the bike (hence the collarbone) and take the hit for the team. Dunno when it'll be ready, or when I will be ready to ride it

Hi all! I've just got back from a decent ride down to Foxton. Had a coffee with Chanceyy and a good little night ride back here. Took the new bike and she's running very sweetly.

Almost had a very embarrasing off, right in front of a cop! They'd blocked off Milson Line for some reason so I decided to do a U turn rather than take the detour they offered. As I was turning, my foot stuck under the gear lever and I almost dropped it! :shit: I'm glad I didn't!

Anyway. Really sorry to hear about your bod and your bike Storm, that's not good - get well soon!

Going to pull your bike apart Yod, good idea. Do you have a manual? I saw a thread earlier where they had tons of manuals online if you don't. I'll find it and post it soon. Bonez and Dogs are pretty good with the mechanics. Could be a few things, carbs, electrics, timing - wish I knew more! Anyway, the stripdown should be fun and real educational.

I still haven't decided which gixxer to take yet. I'm kinda tempted to take the old one as she'll hit 80 K on the ride and has a more comfortable seat. On the other hand, the new one has lot's of new stuff on her. Hmmm, it'll be one or the other.

If I get time tomorrow I'm taking off the fairings and tank and giving it a good clean and lube. Did that to my older one when I got it back and she's running really well. I've got a manual thanks to Gixxer 4 eva and next to the bike, it's the best thing to have!

Looks like the weather will hold - early nite tomorrow and will see you guys Sunday!

Well, I've had a mare of a day, and it's now got to the point where I just have to laugh and bear it.

I'd set most of today aside to strip and clean my new bike, so I launched into it about 8.30 this morning. Removed all the fairings, which isn't so straightforward on that bike as they've been a bit butchered over the years. Anyway, got them off, pushed it onto the lawn and gave it a really good degrease, wash and general onceover.

When I first got this bike, I noticed that it had obviously been dropped and the front fairing subframe and headlight assembly had been knocked out of alignment. In fact I'd had a massive hassle with the headlights as they were literally just 'floating' around inside their enclosure.

So I thought this would be the perfect time to deal to them properly. So, once I'd removed the assembly and dismantled and fixed the problem more or less it was once again a huge pain in the ass to get the headlights back in again, seeing as the subframe is slightly bent and there are bits missing from the headlight unit.

At this stage I noticed that I'd left the ignition on and had almost drained the brand new battery! Don't really know why, as I hadn't had anything running except the headlights for only a minute maybe. Anyway, threw the battery on the charger, so all good.

I got the fairings back on again, by this time it was getting on towards 3.00 pm and I was stiff and sore and feeling not so great having been breathing degreaser, CRC, and general bike fumes.

So I took her out for a much needed coffee, and knew that I'd need to fine tune the headlights as it got darker. This particular bike has always shone it's lights quite low due to the subframe damage, which is annoying at night. So as it got dark, I had a play being very careful not to disturb the fragile balance of the damaged unit.

Took it for a test, and both high and low beam looked pretty good! Yes!

It's completely dark by now,and stupid me decides I can probably adjust them just a little better. So I stop by the side of the road and start winding out the vertical adjuster. And bugger me, the adjuster just has to jump out of its mounting. That's OK though, it seems secure, I can't get to it here, and I'll just go home and sort it out. Get a mile or so down the road, when I hear the whole adjuster screw fall out of its position and onto the road.

God, so I backtrack and find it! Thank god!

Get it home, and as it means removing the front fairing again to get at the unit properly, I decide to skip this step and just reach in behind the fairing. Which I do, and accidently knock the bike forwards, whereapon the side stand flips up and the bike falls over onto my woodpile and cracks a fairing, and breaks the rearview mirror off. Plus bends the front subframe even more, and does something ominous to the sidestand mounting. F..K!

I collect the bits, curse and feel utterly pissed off at myself for being so dumb!

Then I give up in disgust, and go and gas up my other bike. I knew I should have just taken her in the first place - karma (and dumbassness).

See you tomorrow:yes:
