View Full Version : Who is your Kiwi Biker character?

MotoGirl
7th May 2007, 20:37
It’s becoming increasingly obvious to me that some KB members hide behind a fictional character when they post on KB. I say “character” because they choose to be a different type of person (e.g. trouble maker, arsehole, serial red repper) when they can hide behind their monitor.

Using a character is a standard tactic with online chats, and we all know it’s just another form of attention seeking. Everyone knows that nice, normal people don’t get noticed. To stand out, you need to grab people’s attention – having a foul attitude and pissing people off achieves this. Some might call these tactics trouble making; others would say it’s ingenious. I’m undecided.

So, going back to my thread title, I don’t have a KB character. What you read here is what you get in real life. I don’t express my opinions because I’m invincible behind a monitor – I express my opinions the same way I’d do it to your face.

Hi, my name's Hitcher and I'm a grumpy old bugger.

merv

I'm me that's why I even use my real name.

Those that have met me probably need to comment coz they are the accurate judge of what they thought is what they found when they met me.

So far only Steam has surprised me by saying he thought I was a teenager until he met me. Do I really sound that young? I don't think so with all my threads commenting on the 70's and posting pics from that era.

Colapop
7th May 2007, 20:50
Not that young Merv - that small...

7th May 2007, 20:51

BTW I'm not as nice as my KB name.

The '70s? How about the '50s.
My KB name is just a translation of my real name.

Not that young Merv - that small...

Heh, that's a good one, green for that.
I am Steam, I am a buddhist, tree-hugging, barefoot vegetarian green-voter. Heh. That's me in real life too, but I usually wear all black and ride motorcycles, so you can't tell.
Strangely, I am more Me online than in real life. Hmmm... interesting.

I don't hide my age either on the site coz I reckon I do pretty well for my years of experience.

Unlike on here, I'm always a nice guy offline.
As for the name thing, i love the smell of avgas. That and the fact that i LOVE making the flames. Whether it be exhausts (or lack of), Bonfires (grew up on an orchard - one of my jobs was to start/maintain 40ft bonfires), or even fun with lynx.
However I'm not bullet or car proof, and i don't like heights.

No, you are somewhat mistaken there MrPeanut. Those with the "fragile sense of self" are those who need the character. I don't need peer support. I start these threads because I enjoy the stimulating conversation (no pisstake here).

So you've presented a heavily weighted opinion and God help anyone who disagrees with you.
The purpose of this thread is to highlight that people aren't what they seem.

There's nothing wrong with evoking a response from a group of people. Like I said in my first post, I haven't made up my mind whether playing a character is a good or a bad thing. I'm not going to apologise for pointing out that some people act up purely to gain attention.

KB is a great place to chat to other riders when we can't ride. Yes we laugh, cry and take the piss - some more than others, but on the whole it is a great forum.

It is surprising when you meet someone from KB as they're often not what you expect.

I wonder which KB member has been the biggest shock for everyone? In my opinion :dodge: this would be a good indication that that person uses a character.

im more social here than i am in real life. get me with a bunch of friends, and ill be the silent thing in the corner nursing a drink [if ive got one] when im with the local triumph club, ill hang around them, but essentially be silent. dont join in. prefer to watch and observe.
im terribly anti-social, and have a limited number of real life people i can call friends. thats why i ride alone, prefer my own company, and that of the virago.
i use sunhuntin, because thats what i use all over the net. you type that into google, and youll likely find at least 10 other boards. i also used to answer to it in real life, but crashe has since proved that no longer works.

And why izzit that the big laddie squad (Big Dog, Colapop, DMNTD, etc.) are all mad dogs running around in the noonday sun?

Must be a berzerkerganger-viking-babarian-horde kinda thing? :eek5:

It’s becoming increasingly obvious to me that some KB members hide behind a fictional character when they post on KB.
Meh.
I don't have a fictional character, not since SpankMe/Joni killed GoatFood. And farQ2.
And Beelzebub.
And the other personae I can't recall.

If anything, I'm toned down for on here, and delete/censor some of my posts.
OTOH, I wouldn't be quite the same in person, as I have no personality so people tend to ignore me, and look around the room when I speak as if wondering where the disembodied voice was coming from.

Same online as offline I'm afraid. When I'm grumpy offline, I'm grumpy online (not the other way around). I try and remind myself that KB is not real life.

Met a few (most?) of the more extreme characters from KB and in most cases they are quite different, or more rounded in real life (no fat jokes!).

Its intriguing to see what personas people assume when they are on KB. It seems that there are some very distinct flavours eh?

I'm not sure that I'm the same on- and off-line. I probably take the piss on here more than for real, but I'll also be just as helpful to those that need it. I certainly enjoy the personalities of bikers - somehow, they are more 'real' than non-riders - be that on here or in person. I try to be 18 in outlook, but (unfortunately?) that's factored by almost 50 years of life.

The people calling you a “bitch” are just resistant to change, and they’re upset because you’re reining them in after they’ve had so long to run free. I'll judge you by your typing, but I see you as being gutsy and looking out for the best interests of all Kiwi Bikers.

I know this is off-topic, but hey, someone has to say it.
I’m pleased to see both you and the other mods taking action! I don’t say this because I’m pro-mods; I say it because someone needs to give this forum some TLC. For long-term sustainability of this community, KB needs to be a fair playground, which is what you mods are trying to achieve.

In the meantime, let them call you a bitch. I’m sure there’s a huge following for what you guys do here, although we may not say that we appreciate it. :done:

Edit: Let me just add that I'm a member of multiple online forums and Kiwi Biker is one of the most relaxed forums I've participated in. You can harp on about the Nazi mods to your heart's content, but baby you got it easy here.

Same here, Joni! I have been given quite a lot of shit on this site for my views and some of it has got very personal and nasty. I am sure none of these people would act like this to my face (although a few threatened it - I'm still waiting!) but they think nothing of abusing me online.

In person I am not the type to make comments I think will hurt people and tend to keep any negative views to myself. That's probably where the two differ as my online self will say out loud the things I would like to say but don't, for fear of upsetting anyone. I'm probably like MSTRS in that respect - I would take the piss on here more than in real life.

It does bother me sometimes if people attack ME rather than my views, but I'm beginning to realise that not everyone on this site or any other internet site is necessarily representing their true selves. I've met some lovely people off here and I've met a few who I've done no more than exchange a few words with and don't want to go any further. That's where it resembles real life a bit - you don't expect to get on with everyone you meet!

I think the hard part about posting on here is that people only read your words and have no idea of the background to your views, your tone of voice, etc. In the flesh you get to talk back and forth but here, by the time you have posted something and someone has misunderstood (either deliberately or innocently) what you've said, you've been red-repped, flamed and told your mother is a cunt, all within five minutes! And what is with the shit you get from people who disagree with you? It's a free world, why can't we just agree to disagree?

Unfortunately there are some people on here who I will never be prepared to change my mind about, no matter how many others come out in support of them. Others I have changed my opinion of after PMs or back and forth banter on the message boards, but there are some people you just have to walk away from and decide it's not worth it.

Seem to have got a reputation as site hippie...no idea why:shutup:

Sometimes there's an element of devil's advocate (if people are 'asking' for it!) - but usually not.

If I have a character, it's an extension of me, rather than an alternative.

The opinions are real, but I'd be more circumspect putting them out there IRL.

Can't say I care IRL whether a person is left-wing, right-wing, no-wing, socially conservative or liberal...only that they are a good person worth knowing, with opinions they can back up (doesn't matter how) - what's heated rhetoric between friends? (Fun mebbe??)

Personal insults and abuse never get you anywhere (doesn't mean a little well directed sarcasm is out of order :innocent: ) - I make a point of green-repping people I vehemently disagree with if they make a good point.

BEsides - I can't be THAT much of a hippie...after all, I used to genetically modify stuff for my MSc project...There's always more dimensions to a person than that which is on display online.

Oh I didn't mean people criticise what I look like, just that on KB you can say whatever you want and will hardly ever see anyone that hears what you say (or reads it). Where as in the case of my uni where we do a lot of discussing... I am less likely to put the same points across because some people in those classes would take it very personally and would hunt me down!

I'm pretty well the same in person as online - a bit too opinionated, talk a little bit too much, and, much as I hate it but it's probably true anyway - maybe seeking acceptance a bit too much as well.

Sigh. We've done this before. Playwright. Based on the word "wrought", like a wheelwright or a cartwright. And, double sigh, Shakespeare was the playwright who wrote McBeth (the Scottish play). Not to be confused with Robbie Burns, THE Scottish poet.

Oh what a sleekit horrible beastie
Lurks in yer belly efter the feastie
Just as ye sit doon among yer kin
There sterts to stir an enormous wind.
The neeps and tatties and mushy peas
Stert workin like a gentle breeze
But soon the puddin wi the sauncie face
Will have ye blawin' all ower the place.
Nae matter whit the hell ye dae
A'bodys gonnae have tae pay
Even if ye try to stifle, It's like a bullet oot a rifle.
Hawd yer bum tight tae the chair
Tae try and stop the leakin air
Shift yersel frae cheek tae cheek
Prae tae God it doesnae reek.
But aw yer efforts go assunder
Oot it comes like a clap a thunder
Ricochets aroon the room
Michty me, a sonic boom!
God almighty it fairly reeks;
Hope I huvnae ---- ma breeks
Tae the bog I better scurry
Aw whit the hell, its no ma worry.
A'bodyroon aboot me chokin,
Wan or two are nearly bokin
I'll feel better for a while
Cannae help but raise a smile.
Wis him! I shout with accusin glower,
Alas too late, he's just keeled ower
Ye dirty bugger they shout and stare
I dinnae feel welcome any mair.
Where ere ye go let yer wind gan free
Sounds like just the job fur me
Whit a fuss at Rabbie's perty

This?

A doctor arrives for his first day at a new hospital, deep in the Welsh valleys. He is met by one of the sisters, who has been given the task of showing him around the hospital and introducing him to the staff and patients.

It is a large hospital and it takes the whole day to get round. The time approaches for the evening meal as they arrive at the last ward. They follow the dinner trolley into the ward and wait while one of the nurses lifts the lid on the food tray. To the doctor's surprise there is but a single haggis on the tray to feed a whole ward.

One of the patients moves towards the trolley in a purposeful manner addressing the haggis:

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin'-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.

Before he can reach the haggis another patient sprints forward, grabs the simple repast and dashes up the ward. He proudly holds the haggis aloft and cries out in a commanding voice:

Some hae meat and cannae eat.
Some cannae eat that want it:
But we hae meat and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.

At this, a kilted dervish leaps from his bed, whips a skien dubh out of his sock and lunges at the haggis carrier. With a deft movement the haggis bearer fends off the flashing blade with the haggis. Although this prevents any injury it does result in the top of the haggis being hacked off. A small mouse waiting upon this obviously routine event dashes out from under a bed, grabs the loose piece of haggis and scampers up the ward, running the gauntlet of slashing claymores and hurled dirks from various patients. At the end of the ward stands a bent and wizened old man with a wild fire in his eyes. He screams at the mouse:

Wee sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie,
O, what a panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an chase thee,
Wi murdering pattle!

And then dives upon the mouse. With a left dummy and a right feint, the mouse dodges between the old man's legs, through a hole in the skirting board and to safety with his prize. The doctor turns to the sister and asks, "Why is this psychiatric ward full of Scotsmen?"

"Oh no, doctor, these are not Scotsmen, they are genuine valley dwellers born and bred", she replies, "and, anywa, this is not a psychiatric ward, it is the serious Burns unit"

So what's wrong with pretending to be Scottish online?

Everyone should have aspirations I think - my bike is naturally aspirated for example.

Funny how many people are nice and mild mannered in reality and yet cruel bastards online and here I am - pleasant and affable online and a Glaswegian Debt Collector in reality.
