i'm curious to what other people use when they go out on the road.

i have no experience and haven't ridden on the road yet (but have just got into buckets) and was wondering what style people used when road riding eg 1 peice, 2 peice zip together or the jacket and pants.

would you guys be able to clue me up on what you use and the reasons why please.

currently i want to get myself some used 1 or two peices for the track because dads thirty year old ones are getting a bit small and restrict heaps of body movement.

thanks guys

sorry if its a reposted question did look for it.

(if you can think of any better title for this thread tell me, ive never been good at the titles)

Depends on the ride. Sometimes I'll wear one piece, and back protector. Often I'll wear jacket and jeans.
I always wear gloves and boots.

Don't worry about it. There was a thread recently that looked at what people wore. From memory most people wore cordura type gear rather than leather as an everyday set up. I do as it gives me a bit more flexibility when I'm commuting, and it's waterproof (always an advantage in Wgtn).

Can't resist....
I have 6 gears and I use all of them. Although, 1st is all I really need to lose my licence with.
Seriously, I think 2 piece is more user-friendly on the road. Cordura is versatile, being rain-proof and gives a good level of protection. Leather generally will give better protection in an off, keeps you dry in light rain, but you will need overwets in heavier rain.
Good quality boots, preferably with ankle and shin armor.
Good quality gloves, appropriate for the season.
Full-face helmet, with an unscratched visor

Alas I fear not. But I'll settle for waterproof.

My trusty twenty year old leathers; jacket and trousers - black of course. A good pair of boots that cover my ankles, a pair of leather gloves. In the winter I wear a breathable bike jacket with body armour, the body armour is there because it came with the jacket not because it is winter, having said this I am glad it is there.

I find a two piece works best for me as I can chuck the jacket off and cool down, especially in the summer. I have water proofs to put over the leathers.

I have both (not all new). For touring I use cordura, for shorter or warmer rides ventilated leather jacket.

Will also mix and match occasionally...
Whatever seems to provide the appropriate protection from both the weather and the road.

I wear jeans, back protector and codura jacket when commuting. But country rides - weekend rides I always wear my 2-piece with back protector. Of course gloves and boots always too.

The 2-piece makes me feel alot safer too which helps improve confidence on the road.

I'd recommend a back protector for all occassions! There is not alot of meat along your spine and the consequences of a fall without one could be worse than fatal.

PM TonyB - he'll be able to set you up with awesome quality leathers for a great price.

6 gears how lucky! i have five gears and id have to use 4 of them to get a ticket in town. (not that im going to ride it in town)

thanks for the info guys, i have got myself a back protector and have found a one peice on trademe and i am going to try them on in the next few days, hopefully they fit.

i do want to have good gear on the road and also be practical maybe i should get some two peice leathers and water proofs or is it just as good getting two peice codura with the armour.

heres a link to the leathers im looking at.

They look like they need a good clean up and wax with the proper products (Nikwax or similar).

If you buy those then a one-piece wet weather suit might give you the answer to most eventualities. The one-piece suits aren't all *that* expensive...

I have options now... since the Quasimoto leathers arrived.

I have a choice of full 2-piece race leather setup with AlpineStar SMX boots, and summerweight leather gloves,

or

Dririder Cordura pants, Mototech Cordura Jacket (both with really warm winter linings), Gaerne wet weather touring boots and winterweight leather gloves with Thinsulate linings.

or a Spool Cordura Jacket

or a Jet Leather 1980 vintage black leather race jacket that I could wear if I lost another 10 kgs.

or any combination of the above.

Always wear good gear. Skin is hard to grow back. And painful.

I have some adventure gear pants with padding in the hips, knees etc which I wear on longer weekend rides and an adventure style jacket with all the required padding which I ALWAYS wear.
I always wear my leather/kevlar gloves and on longer rides my FOX MX style boots.
For just running around I just wear my jacket, jeans (soon to be Draggn' Jeans) , gloves and some steel capped boots

old Nolan helmet (soon to be replaced, hopefully tomorrow with a shark)
Mobig cordura 2 piece with armour and removable linings...keeps me warm and dry as, but not too bad when its hot (as long as the linings are out and you're on the move!)
Goretex gloves, Forma boots

wouldn't mind leathers as well but it's just the expense....probably will get a 2 piece at some stage for better weather, and cordura just seems more versatile...if you get caught in the rain it's no worries, no need to stop and put on a wet suit, or get soaked if you forgot it!

AGV helmet
Synthetic balaclava
Spidi H2Out suit, Cordura with leather at the contact area
Sidi boots
Quasi race gloves for summer and DriRider waterproofs for winter.

When I took "flying lesssons" 5 months ago the boots limited my broken ankle to a simple break. My left knee took a real pounding and was well bruised but no other damage, thanks to the armour.

Generally have foam pads in the knees. The jackets have same in elbows, shoulders and back. Both generally come with removable linings for cold weather.

You can get start-up kits for around $600 and trade-up to better items as you can afford them. That can be handy as it gives you backup gear for pillions and/or a choice depending on the conditions and ride.

yeah i was thinking of a cheap start off, but does the foam do the job?

Seems to. I've seen the results after a couple of bins, holes in the cordura with bits of padding sticking out but no skin missing. One guy, the cuff of the sleeve wasn't done-up firmly so the sleeve rode up his arm and he had a nasty forearm but that was it. His gear saved him from alot of grief.

The cordura / gortex is certainly more suitable than leather over the full range of weather conditions.

Geeze I did 4 years in Bali on the bikes and only had one cheesy helmet. I remember 1 time it got really cold (not)and I had to use a denim jacket. That same night heading back to the surf camp I bowled a roaming dog and went down after doing the tango with the mutt......the jacket didnt make it either did the dog. After helping it 'quieten' down with my Blundstones (see I was wearing boots) the villagers came to investigate the noise and I had to do some swift talking and a bit of palm greezing to get away. ALWAYS worn something since.

started with a cordura 2 piece, got a leather 1 piece... it eventually got dirty, I was busy, so took the opportunity to get a leather 2 piece as well...

I really should clean both

The 2 piece is handy for the more casual country rides, as you stop more, and in summer you can take the jacket off. With the one piece, its harder. All country rides get either a full back protector, or a front/back protector... Just upgraded my boots, as the old ones allowed too much movement in the ankle. Best for you, is to start up slowly, and build your gear collection over time, as your dollars allow.
