Hello boys and girls!

The Winter Dragwars Season at Champion Dragway Meremere, begins again this coming Sunday May 13th. As usual there are prizes and moolah($$$) up for grabs for each race class at the end of the season, (which you are eligible to win if you compete in all race meets), and not to mention.. a whole lota fun to be had!! There is indeed a BIKE ONLY class, or if you feel like mixing it up a little you can race against all other vehicles in the DYO class. If you're like me and you are a regular drag racer and you plan on competing in every meet - purchase your racing licence. It cuts your entry costs down on the day. to see more details go to www.dragwars.co.nz OR www.championdragway.co.nz.

I'll see you on the strip! :woohoo:

This was my first time at the Drags and I will definitely be back, I never really understood the attraction of going hard in a straight line before but I'm in for more fun next time. I struggled badly with traction and had a crap reaction time but thoroughly enjoyed myself and everyone was keen to help out a newby so thanks to all who helped (if they're on kb)

I think I may have raced against you? I was in a blue falcon ute. Very good day. I was buggered by the time I got home tho, you get so much more track time on a Sunday drag meet than you do on a friday nite. Note to all: Come down, NEXT MEET 27th MAY!

was that your 17sec run??

I went along today too...the idea was to practise my shocking race starts...I was doing a few practised starts yesterday up a quiet cunt-ry road, and totally burnt my clutch out on the race bike...so Mr Zebra lent me his k4thou..the surface was a bit greasy..often the rear was wheel spining and again in second gear..did a few shocker runs...then a few 10.9's...and few more shockers...including a wheel spinning wheelie...that was a whoot!! and best time was a 10.8...it was bloody fun...I'm sooo doing more of this!! need some cheap tyres though...totally rooted the one on the bike doing a 4th gear burnout!!!

I popped along about 12:15pm.
Strictly as a spectator this time.

Bought the "other half" with me.

She can now see the attraction for the 1/4 mile now.'

I kept getting asked why we hadnt come earlier and I hadnt entered.

She was totally impressed with you boys on the bikes.

We have already worked out that the next meet is out as we are both working that weekend but definitely be there for the one after that.

I helps that we live only 34 km from the track.

I thank you all for putting on such a great display and convincing "she who must be obeyed" that drag racing is very exciting.

My particular thanks to a rider who I only knew as Dave. Both Sharron and I were gratefull for the way you just chatted to us when you were packing up to leave.

I had to shoot home before it went flat and picked up the Superduke instead
Yee bloody ha!! Best time of the day was a mere 11.6 but that's not too bad for a trail bike on P.
Big freaking bling to Muggins for getting a 10.3!!!!!!! :shit:  :Punk: and also to Kiwifruit for not winning a t shirt :dodge:

Awesome bro. Wish I'd been there. :weep:

I have the flu too but I still got my ass down there. hehe. I counted 16 bikes all up competing which was really good to see. It was windy and cold but the rain held off, my times were shitty to start with cos the starting grid was a bit too wet and I couldnt get any traction, but it got better thus so did my times. I ended up winning 3 out of my 4 races and I got a perfect reaction time of 0.67 on one of them. Yippeee! Congratulations to the dude who got a 10.3! That was fantastic to hear when they announced it over the loud speakers. Great going!

Try dropping the tyre pressure to about 20lbs/square inch.

gets more rubber to the track and a decent warm up will raise the air pressure.

Another tip for you.

I may be preaching to the converted though

Get some tie downs and strap tour suspension til it almost bottoms out.

Think of the energy it takes when you put the power on and getting it to the rubber. The suspension takes up quite a bit.

Look at the drag bikes. It is rare to see them with any rear suspension at all.

its not as if you are going to be throwing it around the bends is it.

As mentioned in another thread, I helped my boy build a car. We been testing mods over time and have got times down by 2.5 seconds by making seemingly small mods.

The last one I found interesting.
His previous best was 13.73 and times were a little variable (mostly around 14). I had found some info on the Web about oils and dyno runs with different weight oils. The dyno runs showed a measurable increase in power by going down in oil weights.

Many of the jappas in America use 20 weight oil to achieve their fuel economy regulations.

So hey, what we got to loose by going down to 30 weight oil from 40? Well he lost 0.5 of a second with consistent 13.3 and a best of 13.27 last Sunday (Nissan only day).

Ok, so it's not a scientific test (just as the last 2 seconds worth weren't either) but we will be using 30 weight oil from now on for the strip.

Oh, the research also said it would shorten your engine life, but hey so will drag racing too.
We swapped back to 40 for the road.

Struth! - Id love to do a 9.6!

Those times are pretty close ultimate...and probably more the exception than the norm.
I've seen Dean Veale has run his GSXR750 down Merex2 in 10.2...and that was pretty impressive one off riding on a stock bike by someone who has been in the game for a while.

Isolated in my own world, will it ever be free?
Haunted figures around me, I want em' to stay
There always there to protect me, this is one thing you can't take away

Tips for Drag Racing Streetbikes By Dean Veale

Here are a few ideas on how to get the most from your street bike when you decide to drag race it. I do not claim to now everything about this but I
have done a reasonable amount of research and experimenting over the past 3 years.

Staging.
- Both feet down but with only the minimum amount of weight on your feet required to balance the bike. You want your bodyweight on the bike for
traction! - Your upper body should be as low and forward as possible to help keep the front wheel down. - Have your right hand rotated more forward around the throttle than you would normally, with your elbow elevated. This will help you get the throttle wide open more easily (you're not going to win using 3/4 throttle) - Clutch released to the point of the bike almost creeping forward. It also helps with clutch control if you hold the lever further out towards the end than you might normally. - Engine rpm as low as possible without engine bogging down on launch. I use around 4k on my Busa and 6k on the 750.

Launching.
- Clutch release and getting on the throttle are the MAIN things here. Its not easy to get right and I certainly still need a lot of practice. The trick is to let the clutch out progressively while SIMULTANEOUSLY winding on the throttle to full. There is a tendency for a lot of people to hold high rpm on the line and then slip the clutch to take off, and once their clutch is out, to start getting on the throttle. This is slow and also hard on your clutch. If the engine is bogging on launch it may not be because you need more initial rpm. You may just need to let the clutch out slower, or get on the throttle faster, or both.
- Remember to keep your body down and forward, and get at least your left foot on the peg to change gear.

Down the track.
_ Once your past the initial craziness of 1st gear and into 2nd (most bikes perform best if you run them right up to the redline) you can then start to
tuck in for minimal aero drag. Also concentrate on getting your gear changes right and keeping it straight. If you are lucky enough to have lots of
power, or just a poorly set up bike, you may need to stay forward to keep the front down through 2nd and into 3rd.

Setting up the Bike
- The first thing (and it is cheap too) is to get the gearing right. You want the gearing so that as you go across the finish the engine is almost on the rev limiter. On most sport bikes this usually means going 1 tooth smaller on the engine, and going across the finish line in 4th gear. -Select a chain length that will put the rear wheel as far as possible to the back of the adjustment slots (maximum wheel base to reduce wheelstands). -Rear shock on minimum compression damping and maximum rebound. -Forks on maximum rebound damping if they are strapped down. -Rear tyre pressure should be as high as possible and still maintaining traction. I have had to go as low as 8psi sometimes, though 15 to 20psi would be more usual with a lowered big bike on a good track. -Lower the bike. At the rear this usually involves replacing some suspension links with ones of a different length. At the front you can slide the forks through the triple clamps and/or strap it down with a purpose made (available from USA) tie down strap. When doing this be aware of keeping things so that they don't hit when the suspension moves, and maintaining the required 50mm+ ground clearance with the rider on the bike. Be especially cautious that the forks can still go to full compression without the sump hitting the ground. This can happen if you come down hard from a wheelie. This will result in a smashed sump, oil on the track, and you on the ground. -Run the bike on the minimum octane fuel recommended by the manufacturer.

That's all I can think of at the moment. So just go and do it and have some
fun.
And Yes Dean knows what he's talking about:scooter:
