View Full Version : Favourite corners in Auckland

Winter

The last couple of days puttering around the greater Auckland area, I've found a couple of corners that I just love.

Its probably because they are just right for my level of riding or sommat, but I thought I'd ask others what there favourite lines are?

There is a wicked roundabout in Howick somewhere with a bit of a left-right-left line you can do at some silly speeds.

See attached pic for todays favorite, nice and easy just 'lots-o lean'. First to name it gets some bling!

Heading south, along the the old SH1 just north of the Albany Hill, you come past an Xmas tree plantation on your right, it breaks into a passing lane, then a right-hander, into a sweeping left-hander and uphill. Brilliant, never seen a cop there, I always go hard up that one!

That's the one. I used to enjoy that little road that runs parallel to the motorway along the waterfront by the yacht club when I had my XR250. Even beat a Gixxer 1000 along that stretch too. However ... he did have to slow down for the huge speedbumps, whilst I used them as an excuse for airtime.

Lol! I've never been down there, but I was going along next to it on the motorway, and there was this guy on a scooter... he was nailing it, he bottomed out on one of the speedbumps and bailed haha. This happened while he was ahead of me, so I saw him pick himself up as I went past, he seemed OK, so I wasn't too worried. Shit it was funny!

done about 90 through there I think... there's a very good line to take :innocent:

Even better is turning right onto botany from cascades. If you get lucky, traffic has cleared out, and hasn't turned orange yet. Race down into the intersection, hard on brakes, down a few gears, feel it lock up, chuck it through corner, over the high-ish crown, bit of wiggle from the rear... yes... I like

Can't beat the SE curves either... I swear if anything is going to teach me not to do it any more... its going to be those concrete barriers

That waterview on-ramp to town sketches me out a bit cos of the armco on the outside.

My fave is on beach rd on the shore, travelling south between castor bay & milftown there is a lovely uphill left/right combo. Smooth, grippy & curvy - like all the best things in life :innocent:

I've not found that to bad.

It's bumpy but after the first time I went round on the bike and got shaken about I just ride around the bumps.

My favorite corner on the way to work is along Mt Eden rd heading towards Mt Eden Motorcycles.
Dips downhill and sweeps to the left.

Pithy there are usually cars in the way.

This is part of a longer sequence of corners. Kiwi Esplanade, Mangere Bridge. The best corner IMHO is the one highlighted in red. Perfect surface, signposted at 25kph, long enough to scrape pegs if you go quick enough. I take this route most days, it would be faster to just go straight to my house, but it's much more fun to take the detour down along the waterfront then back up.

Gotta agree with mark here. Used to love fern glen north, watch for boyracers on your side of the road people! Riddell road would be great if it was 70, lots of nice sweepy corners. All of those clevedon/kaiaua roads are epic.

Yeah, that Waterview onramp is always good for a lean...unless it's busy with traffic.

My faves are close to home - probably just familiarity. There's 2 mint right-handers going towards Huia Rd on Laingholm drive. Beaut surface - unlike some of the other crap on same road.

It's niiiiice to live in the twisty Waitakeres - always good to see the sign at the start of Lainghom Drive proclaiming twistyness for the next few kms home

Sounds like me.
When I worked in Ponsonby, I took the back streets to work and home. Didn't really save any time, but I'd rather take longer and keep moving. I HATE sitting in traffic on the bike.

Now I work in Albania, I've almost got my routes sorted out. The trouble is, with all the traffic congestion in D'Auckland, a lot of the backstreet routes have become popular with "rat runners". I took one of my old routes the other week, when I had to go into town at rush hour :shit: (yeah, it was really crap), and pharkme, if it wasn't all clogged up with car drivers who'd worked out it was better taking the less obvious route.

The thing I find is that even taking the same corners day after day after day, I rarely feel like I've absolutely nailed them, especially as there are some tricky off-camber corners to contend with. The best experiences would have to be having the rear sliding on the FahrtSurm, and coming out of corners on either the FahrtSturm or the VFR with the front wheel off the deck. Also good - but guilty pleasure - is passing cars around the outside of favourite corners. And my Birkenhead - Ponsonby backstreet route included at least one wheelie nearly every day.

I have too much imagination though, and remember what binning it feels like, even though I've only lowsided once (on the way to work), once been taken out by a dozy git outside his house, and never lost it from going too fast. I worry that if I thrash around the same streets too many times, some namby-pamby SafetyNazi will phone the cops and I'll get pinged one day, then that will fuck it up completely for me.

Did you know there used to be street races at Bucklands beach? Late '40's and early '50's.I don't remember them as I was just a baby, but my mother often used to talk about them....they could watch sitting on the wall of my grandmother's house on The Parade.

Not this Thurs, cos it's been and gone, I don't get enough time for myself to get a ride every week. The two ATNR's and a few random ones are all I really get in lately (except for the daily North Western which is K's under the belt and mean's I stay in tune with the bike). If the roads dry on the 24th I'll be there for sure, gonna try to make each second one and follow the big bikes!

Ummm, I wasn't pinching the thread......

Manuka Rd, Glenfield going up the hill isn't one I would have thought of as a typical bike corner but always leaves me smiling. The right/left thru Pare' just up from the prison makes me think, there's room for more speed on that one each time and the new motorway links, no oncoming traffic BRAND NEW ROAD SURFACE!! and good viz.:Punk:
