View Full Version : Healthy eating?

Bit of a ramble, so if you're easily bored (or live on KFC bro), no need to read this ;)

Just went to the supermarket tonight to do our every-three-week "big shop." Except this time I was looking at things from a healthy eating standpoint as well as the usual - watching out for the specials. Anyway, what amazed me was some products that are usually perceived as "healthy" and generally good for you are actually worse than some products that are widely perceived as "unhealthy" or generally bad for you. Without going into benefits like vitamins and minerals, yada yada, and just looking at how much energy (in kJ) things have in them per 100mL or per 100g gives you a good indication of how good for you things actually are. High energy can be bad, as excess is stored as fat.

For example: a 3L bottle of pure orange juice (Pams), generally perceived as healthy, had over 200kJ of energy per 100mL. That is very high. A bottle of Coca Cola has only (but still very high) 180kJ of energy per 100mL. Basically the bottle of pure orange has more sugar in it than the Coke. Surprising. Once we noticed that and looked at some other groceries we would usually buy, we noticed that some were quite a bit higher in kJ than others. It was an interesting trip, and for the first time I felt like I'd been shopping for more healthy food. Got lots of fruit and veg too :)

Sorry, bit of a ramble I know, just thought I'd share.

healthy food is good! I'm a bit of a health advocate...and i find that being vegetarian makes things cheaper and healthier.. if you know what you need to get all the things your body needs, then you're sweet.. I've never felt better!

Welcome home bro.

You'll also find we don't have close to the choice of microwave meals that there is in the UK :(

I heard about healthy eating but years ago decided I would have no truck with it.

Until you get older and your metabolism slows down and before you know it you need a truck to move your arse if you don't eat healthy.

The easiest way to beat obeasity is before you get it.

As someone who works in the industry of fast food (not by choice, just asian is why ), I find it all laughable.

All I know is moderation in everything including moderation itself! And if you like to eat a lot, take up weight lifting - heavens, when you do the physical excercise necessary, no need to worry about it all!

Stop bunging things down one orifice and get off your fat arse and do some ditch digging will easily result in fat loss and muscle gain. T'ain't rocket science!

When I was lifting weights at uni ... A typical day's food was like this ...

15-20 egg whites (30 on a power lifting day)
half a chicken
3 cans tuna
2L milk
6 bananas
2 potatoes
1 head lettuce
Apples/Pears/Oranges (2-3 pieces of fruit)

I was doing powerlifting and since I love to eat, perfect excuse to go eat!

Climbing up those steps from the gym back in the day after squat sessions took me 5 minutes... staggering and hauling my non-responsive legs up  Used to carry my pail of food to the lectures ... funny thing was having the conversations with other students along the line of "Fark! That's my whole weeks food you got there!"

And carrying the blender around to liquify all the food when I didn't feel like chewing it was another hard-case thing I did!

You got that right!

I've adopted a healthy eating lifestyle, and its a cunt!!!!

We make sure that there is no junk food and all that kind of stuff in the house to tempt us, and fortunately living 15-20 mins from town its a pain in the butt to go get takeaways that are cold when you get home.
And I hate nuked takeouts so thats out of the question.
As a result of this change of life, I've lost heaps of kilos over the last year which equates to being able to go faster on the bike, so I guess there is a plus.........

I usually have an eat what I like day on the weekend, either Sat or Sun, and that fixes my cravings.
Mind you seeing that bloke on telly the other night at 200 kilos and eating KFC every night made me cringe.

Not to mention when my vegan daughter is home to visit the usual $200 trolley becomes a $400 trolley. There are big premiums being asked for some of the "healthy" stuff.

I got to 160kg. Bloody good paddocks here. Walked and exercised and dieted 50kg off.
I now know it's easier to not put it back on than walk it all off again.

Different type of sugar.

Yep, true, and we all know orange juice has other benefits that Coke sure doesn't have (dietary fibre, vitamin C etc etc). But if you're sitting around on the couch being lazy, and wanting to have a drink of something... orange juice is gonna be just as fattening. The added sugars bit on the bottle had a similar number to Coke anyway. If you're taking in kJ and not using it... might not turn into Mr KFC on Downsize Me (that was a big boy), but won't be losing weight either.

I got to be a real fat cunt too before taking control.
What a battle!

Well all this healthy eating stuff is actually completely against this diet I have been put on from my allergy specialist.
Long story short, due to excema and nothing else working they think I have an intollerance to these lil things called salicylates. Salicylates are naturally occuring (for the lack of a better word) chemicals that help food to not go off. They are also man made and are the 'preservatives' you see evident in basically all packaged food.

Now this diet is possibly the worst diet in the whole world. It isn't like.. "stop eating fatty foods" or "eat more veges" It is basically the opposite.
Just a few of the things I am not allowed... all fruit (basically)... all veges (basically).. all beverages except water. And when I say all beverages.. I mean it! No wine, no beer,no fruit juices, no soft drinks.. nothing! I am allowed dairy so am allowed milk.

Anyway my diet is horrible, and going to do supermarket shopping is actually rather upsetting. It is not a diet to help me loose weight, it is a diet to fix my itchy skin. If I have anything with any salicylates in it my skin is sore as the next day and is actually not worth it at the moment.

Here is a website with some of the stuff on it.. the one I normally show people isn't working today... maybe I over did the site or something!!

Oh wait.. I just remembered.. I am allowed pineapple juice but only a small amount :(
With alcohol I am allowed Vodka, so when I go out it will have to be Pineapple and vodka... which isn't actually that nice!! I love my wine! and I really hate it that I can't really drink it!
