GN250 - Where to buy in Wellington?

Hi guys and gals,
New member here - moved here from Northern Ireland 8 months ago and now need some transport - gonna do my roadsafe day course and do my BHS test in 2 weeks. :scooter:

Looked around at what looks like a good starter bike and looks like a wee Suzuki GN250 is the puppy for me based on what I have read and that I do like the look of the bugger.
Went into Wellington Motorcycles today and I can get a New GN250E little black number for $3700 on the road. Just wondered if anywhere else does it for less?

Would also go for a second hand one but i liked the idea of a year warranty and that i only have to pay $1000 up front (which is all i can afford at the mo).

Any advice out there greatly appreciated!

Welcome dulux, great to see u aboard... yep GN250 a great commuter bike, had one myself in a previous life, Ive seen em up here for $3300 and Im sure u can barter the onroad costs and a bit if you put the hard word on em. just see your local Suzuki dealers, check em out, compare prices and pit one against the other for best deal..

Definately check out the Scorpio as well, I ended up getting a 2nd hand GN but from what I've read (note, I've got no experience to back this up) the Yamaha is a far better bike, and for only a couple of hundred dollars more. TSS and Motorad have them in stock, I believe.

i bought a new gn in october 05. sold a year later. over 10,000 or so k i put on her, she spent more time in the shop than out. be warned: the warrenty covers very little of the bike. itd be easier if they listed what it did cover, than what it doesnt.
in the year, i had the following: 2x head lights, 3x tail lights. chain coming loose twice... the second time it jumped off on a corner and destroyed the chain guard along with it. regulator went, which meant it either wasnt charging the battery, or wasnt holding the charge. and the speedo packed up. [which took 5 weeks to replace, btw]
plus, theres also the rust to factor in. mine and others have rusted around the front instruments nuts when still able to be classed as brand new. someone here has coated her bike in something, which has kept it at bay... cant recall who though! :dodge:

the regulator going was the last straw. i traded in and bought a second hand virago. put about 6000k on her, without a drop of trouble.

the classic gns, from the 80s, are virtually indestructable. i got my 86 hit by a car, and still she ran smooth as. before that, i ran her from wangas to levin and back without any oil [whoops!] and she still ran. the newer, i think, chinese built, dont seem to have that quality.

of course, this is only my view based on one bike. maybe i got the bad one in the bunch? best of luck with whatever you decide... hopefully some gn owners from here can come and advise as well. im by no means knocking the mighty gn... the 80s one i had was awesome, and made for an interesting ride at night time. but i fear the new ones are letting down the name.

Bingo. Exactly the problem. I heard a rumour that Suzuki NZ tried to stop getting the Chinese ones in for this reason.

How long are you planning on keeping the bike?? There are better ones to look at if you wont be able to upgrade for a while.

Cant offer advice as where to buy as I am in the BOP,but I own a 2006 chinesemadeGN250.I have done 11500klm in the first 11 months,and have found it to be fantastic value.Yes it blows tailbulbs,3 so far,but at $2.5 each hardly a problem.Yes the chinese chain did stretch,but if you keep it adjusted and LUBRICATE it ,it wont break.Have just put a new chain on mine at 11000,and there is no sign of sprocket wear.Had a cracked fork leg replaced under warranty,also the rear muffler baffle.Dont believe all the crap you hear about bad roadholding either,the bike is as good as the rider!

I have been useing Castrol chain lubricant,comes in a spray can,Think it cost me about $15,and has lasted a year.must have adjusted and lubed the chain abouy 7or 8 times.

I LOVE my gn having lots of fun on it. Havent ridden anything else to compare but I love it anyway.

ken... yeh, i never noticed a problem with the back tyre slipping in the wet. ok, it did once or twice, but only when trying to corner on a wet white paint line. it would step out, and then bite again.

the chain stretched on the way back from paeroa. had it tightened right after i got back. it stretched again, and then jumped off the day before she was going in to get it fixed again. [soonest i could get her into the dealer] luckily it jumped on a slow corner, and didnt cause an accident... i was able to coast to a stop, and then push across the road to work. bent the chain guard up something wicked.

yeh, the tailbulbs dont cost much... last one i put in i bought from work and fitted right then and there.
