View Full Version : Rm250 Problems.

It seems my rm has a tendancy to destroy plugs. I get about a 1 hour ride before the plug goes. I am running a Ngk b8egv (the guy at the bike shop reccomended this plug). Anyone have any ideas as to why it might be doing this?

have you tried replacing the suzuki with an aftermarket honda?

alternatively,
how is your oil/fuel mixture?
are you riding like a bitch?
is your crank seal gone?

Running 40:1. I'm going to get some motul 2 stroke oil after school tomorow and see if that cures the problem, it is smoking quite badly. Yeah I am riding like a bitch, the neighbours complain if I fang it. The crank seal was just done before I bought the bike so it should be fine.

if you are running a 40:1 on syntehtic oil they should be fine, sounds like your jetting is two rich, try a leaner pilot or main jet

also try a BR8ES, they are cheaper and if you are just crusing around they are less prone to fouling,

I've kind of had it with Motul. It smokes like a fucker in my bike too.

Just run with castrol TTS.

I'd say if you aren't fangin it enough you have teh plug fouling. You may want to get it jetted.

Yep jetting is the problem. May also be time to do the rings depending on how fresh the top end is.
Run B8es plugs. They won't foul any sooner and cost half as much. The type / brand of oil you are running isn't the problem.

I am running mineral based oil, shouldn't make to much of a difference should it? The topend is around 3 hours old, I hardly ride this bike.

According to the manual, the jetting is stock. How much will it roughly cost to get my bike jetted / tuned?

you need to run BR plugs, they have a risitor for electracal noise which RM's and YZ's are particuly bad for, i would run all late model mx bikes on risitor type plugs,

yes mineral oil does make a difference,

it is pretty easy to rejet the bike yourself, jets should be $10 to $15 each

im not sure but i think you can run in to trubble mixing mineral and syntehtic oils may pay to check this out.if the jetting is stock and its been fine for the last 10 years mybe its not the jetting, has this been recent problem?
check the float level in the carb and make sure theres no gear box oil getting past the crank seal.

Lion
14th May 2007, 10:09
I will dump all the fuel and put in some fresh mix. The jetting seems to have been fine? I don't think the crank seal is leaking.

Lion
14th May 2007, 17:42
Well I drained the fuel out and put in a fresh mix using castol TTS at 40:1. Now the bike runs for about 5 seconds then fouls the plug.
I will pick up one of those br8es plugs after school tomorow.

B0000M
14th May 2007, 17:53
the br8es wont do mych different to the b8es, aside from making the TV go fuzzy, it certainly wont be the difference between fouling and not fouling

scott411
15th May 2007, 07:39
it will make a difference to high RPM running tho,
a BR8ES cost the same as a B8ES, late model mx bikes need resistor type plugs

Lion
16th May 2007, 16:51
Got a couple of BR8ES spark plugs, they are pretty cheap at $6. I took it out for a blat today and it goes way better, and the plugs don't foul out anymore.

My pipe is filled up with oil and carbon, what are the easiest ways to remove this crap?

B0000M
16th May 2007, 17:16
remove it, wash it out with kero, or degreaser, replace the packing, let it all dry for a good amount of time, then re assemble

I tried caustic soda, but I think mine had gone off when I did it....

Or just buy a Honda, aye Scott...

yeah, the only honda crossers I've had were SHIT. its fouling plug, too rich. i'll give ya $800 for it. or tell ya neighbours to get fucked, give it a good caning, and it'll settle down.

Lion

The plug seems to be all sweet now, running nice and smooth, and doesn't smoke anymore.

I went to repack the silencer today (Fmf Turbinecore 2). I cannot remove the bloody endcap, I have drilled all the rivets out but the thing wont budge.. Any ideas?

cheese
20th May 2007, 19:44
LOL you don't!!!!!!

You take the 3 bolts out at the input end and the entire thing slides out. the other end has a turbine on it that means you don't need a spark arrestor.

It's stiff to pull apart.

Now you need to rivet it back together..... Bugger.

Lion
20th May 2007, 20:00
I pulled the inside out, but there is tonnes of oil pissing out of the turbine and there is little balls of carbon rattling around in there. So the end piece / turbine can't be removed??

Given the fact that you have continual Fouling plugs and you have stated above on more than one occasion you have oil filling and pissing out of the exhaust. I'm wondering if you still have a rich jetting problem then your new plug will foul eventually as well.

I would recommmend you search the web for Rich-lean plug colour pics and learn about reading your plug. Its not that hard you just need to come in full noise and switch off so your idle circuts don't contaminate the reading, take the plug out and look at the colour.
I don't want to give a lesson here but if its really sooty or more likely wet and black you need to look at your main jet and needle postion. You could even take digital pics of them and post them here for more help. But we need more info than you have given.

Hye my plugs are really black and sooty, needs jetting you think?

Cheese Not necessarily. The best reading for the plug is cut it during a full noise or at least a hot fast session. It may be black and sooty by the time you've shagged about getting back to the car.
To get a good reading say at Woodhill. Give it shit on the trail, give it shit on the road on the way back to the car, don't change down etc etc just pull the clutch, kill it with the switch. So you get a good hot reading "on power" before your idle circuts have had a chance to come into play. If your bike is going well you are also startng to talk quite fine changes and that also depends on where you want the power.

And remember the Golden rule " always try richer before leaner". you can't stuff it by going rich, you can by going to lean.

Lion this needs to be done as per the above. Sending a pic of a brand new plug with only a thrash up the road to its credit probably won't tell us anything.

Hey cheese, do you know if a stock rm silencer is compatible with my fmf pipe? I heard a rm like mine the other day, it had a stock silencer and was a whole lot quiter. Do you still have the stock silencer?

Na I don't have the stock pipe.

You just need to pack it properly.

Did you fix the bits you drilled out?

Lion
24th May 2007, 07:50
Yea I just put some new rivets in there and repacked it. The smoking seems to have settled down now.

dont bother. there is no way through replacing any part of the altezza exaust system that you can make the horrible noise go away.

same with skylines, they make the horrible noise no matter what

Lion
