View Full Version : Paekak Hill finally got me

Grub

Lowsided the CBR on the way to work this morning.

It's a tight chip seal left hander going north (outside 876 Paekakariki Rd). It is steeply cambered and I was InTheGroove and really enjoying myself. The corner is a marked 25 kmh one and I was doing about 35. This is the same corner where Glenn head-butted the car last week, same direction too.

I noticed it was wet down in that part of the valley whereas the rest was just damp. I took my usual line, tipped it in for the apex just beside the centreline, lost the front and dumped it. Bugger! Didn't feel like we came down heavy, bike slid across the road but didn't reach the armco on the outside of the corner (pretty much proving it was low-speed) I sat up straddling the yellow centre line and said a rude word.

Dammit the camber on that corner is steep! The bike was tank-down and I couldn't lift it. First driver arriving got out to help, we got it upright and BOTH of us slipped on the oily shit that must have put me down in the first place and we dropped the bloody thing on it's OTHER side. Not happy!

Damage to the bike = Finding all the previous repairs on the LH fairing ... they all fell off, bent indicator stalk, bent gear lever and lots of scratches on the plastic. THEN when we dropped it on the other side, broke the brake blade and scratched that side but didn't appear to bust anything else. That's about when Sparky Bills arrived. It's not often you can order your replacement parts while you're tidying up the road side from your bin is it (thanks again Martin).

Other damage ... holes in my Cordura (sob sob) in the left knee, elbow and hip areas. That's stuffed its waterproofing now. Hey Spittie, get out yer leather patches, needle & thread, I'll be round later. Found that it pays to be concerned where in your gear the armour pads settle and to correct them. I've been aware and mildly concerned that mine around the knees seems to settle on the inside of the knee, which didn't seem to me to be the right place for it. It wasn't. The side of my knee was exposed so that's where I banged it. I should have had the pockets adjusted when I first noticed it. The armour and extra padding in the elbow/forearm was great and even though that's where most of the impact was, I can feel nothing.

Oh yeah and Crazefox, we're going to get to do those repairs now ... lol

Me? I'm ok. Banged the side of my knee which is aching and will probably hurt some tonight. Pissed off as I was *really* enjoying the ride this morning for some reason it was one of those ones that just felt sooo good - until then.

 Owie ow ow. Good to hear that you are able to post this and only bits of bike were badly damaged. Sounds like you worked out what happened and ups to the cager who helped you (even if you both ended up flipping the bike onto it's other side! :pinch:)

Glad to hear you had the gears on - and thanks for the reminder of adjusting your armour to where it is most effective for yourself.

How long before you reckon your bike is rideworthy again?

Shit thats no good mate. Guess if you commute on a tricky seciton of road like that its more than likely something will happen eh?

Admit I had a chuckle at the parts ordering part.

Well I carried on to work with all the spare plastic bits in my backpack. It's not pretty but it still goes. Discovered one bit I have left behind, so will VisitTheScene on the way home :)

No good - glad you are OK...

Perhaps you might want to take a gooood look at the surface when you get there tonight and suggest to the relevant council they clean up the surface - might be coolant from Glenns bin or anything else.

Hope you are not too sore today..

Silly thing is I'm more pissed about messing my cordura up than I am about the bike. The bike is bog and bits, fixing my suit is going to be much more difficult.

That's totally irrational I know - but I can't shake that feeling.

I can just imagine the anger as it tipped over onto the other side.

II can just imagine the anger as it tipped over onto the other side.

It was a kind of double-whamy. When I low-sided, I was sort of resigned to the fact that I done something just a wee bit stupid (thinking I'd yellow-lined it). It was an interestingly calm experience at the time. As the bike and I were sliding, I was listening for the crunch of the bike hitting the armco which it didn't. I was surprised to see how freely they slide though, illustrating just how much lateral force we're applying. I even imagined I was goiing to pick it up relatively undamaged :Tui:

When we both lost our footing on the greasy slope of the corner and dropped the bike again ... THEN I got mad. What do you do when you get mad? Call *555 - no cell coverage way down in that gully.

Bah!

Do you need a hand with anything?

Thanks for the offer Sels, I don't think so. I'm going to need Crazefox and Spittie to fix bike & cordura respectively. The bike goes and isn't bent, a few bits of gaffer tape holding it together before it goes to hospital. Nothing else needs doing that I can see so far.

Ah bugger Grub. The goat track of death has a good bite sometimes. At least you were able to walk away.

Remember to sort out the sore bits. Naturo Pharm make a good Arnica cream - its called Accident Relief Cream. Works wonders. Also Anti-Flamme can help with the other bits that you'll find out about later tonight - when you drop the bike you also twist and band things you don't notice until later...

Don't worry about the bike - those CBR's are tough.

Take it easy riding home tonight.

Good to hear you're okay.
Also I can vouch for Crazefox's repairs/painting. He does an awesome job.
The CBR will be looking great in no time :)

Grub was having a bad morning and then...

BOTH of us slipped on the oily shit that must have put me down in the first place and we dropped the bloody thing on it's OTHER side.

Ahhhh! C*nt!

Glad to hear you're OK.

Ouch! Sad news, Grub. I took Mrs H's new ride for a spin up there yesterday afternoon (to rub off its chicken strips) and thought how clean the road was, for a change. My mission was successfully accomplished. Shame about yours.

Gosh, the GTOD is spectacular fun on a Bandit 650...

sorry to hear about your spill grub. At least you came out not too knocked about. Sounds very much like my bin in december, i took something away from that which has helped me try to avoid it happening again.

My sympathy.
Still, don't know anyone who actually RIDES a bike who hasn't done that. (damn oil dumping autos/trucks) Glad it was not serious.

Thanks everyone ... quite blown away by all the messages.

I think I have just discovered what attracts the girls to retail therapy. Well perhaps this is taking it a little to the extreme.

We're off to Taupo Friday night for the VMCC Meeting on Sunday .... so now the free day we had on Saturday for "messing around" will be spent nipping up to Tauranga to pick up the new bike and back again via Pyes Pa, Rotorua and Taupo.

I hate to see the old CBR in such a sorry state, it has personality and a soul, but it seems everything else has sort of fallen into place.

Almost joined you on the lowsiding side of things today.

New roundabout on college rd = loose chip piles between wheel tracks.
Had a biker pull out on me, saw me and stopped directly in my path.
I swirved + accelerated to avoid him and had the rear wheel come around 45 degrees to my left before it regained traction.
Must've been a good show for those around to observe... motard styles on a rgv!

Was kinda fun in a i-need-to-change-my-underwear sort of way. Need to get myself a dirt bike :D

Hope you aren't too banged up.
